Ironically these tapes (along with pretty much any true CrO2 cassette) don't take signal too much. They do have extremely low noisefloors, which is where the tape gets it's dynamic range. Great tape though!
I found that BASF CR super II was excellent, it gave sharper cleaner sound with pinsharp trebles and crisper midranges and great bass performance. BASF LH super I/super II and maxima II didn't quite have the edge for sound that give BASF CR-super II it's well rounded performance edge.
German BASF invented audio tape. Phillips made the the first 'compact cassette machines' and BASF made the poly-film tape for them...... But BASF was making audio tape even earlier than that. Fritz Pfleumer in 1928 made the FIRST tape recorder (based on earlier wire recorders) using a BASF made tape (oxide on paper). ......German field recorders during WWII used BASF made tape.
p.s The low output levels often resulted in incorrect operation of Dolby B NR which was intolerant of tapes producing lower output levels than the recorder had been calibrated for.
Chromium Dioxide tape generally gave low hiss and crisp treble but for any given recording level more low frequency distortion and lower output levels than cobalt-doped high-bias ferric tapes (e.g TDK SA). The low hiss levels meant you could record at lower recording levels to avoid distortion and still maintain good dynamic range.
The European brands like BASF, AGFA, and 3M were actually better than the rival Japanese brands like Maxell or JVC, but I always remember customers asking for the Japanese brands ?
true Cr02(chromiumdioxide)tape preferring to use modified fine crystal versions of their own high end tape formulations that (supposedly)give equally good performance at Type IECII/Cr02 setting-I found the performance of these quite variable, some with excellent performance,so not so good. I found that BASF Chromdioxid super II and all it's other maxima variants were better than a lot of them and performed well too.
While BASF and AGFA are European firms that made some good stuff (though I tend not to like BASF video cassette as I've had bad luck with them), 3M isn't European.
3M is short for Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing and is based in St. Paul, Minnesota in the United States.
The company built on killing jews with Zyklon B and getting tax breaks ever since.

Tatsächlich waren die BASF Cassetten nicht ein Mal 2. Wahl, mechanisch nicht, Haltbarkeit schlecht, Tonqualität bestenfalls Mittelmaß.

I found an old BASF audio cassette at the thrift store, and it worked great. Of course, I don' know where it is now, though.

Chrome tape gives excellent dynamic range, sharp crisp treble and a fuller quality.
