The most ironic thing with this is that the real story the novel is based on had the captain (Jonas Pleškys) defecting to the United States and later learned English and became a programmer in silicon valley, no joke.
wow, this wouldnt been great if they followed this story line, even out of context...they could shown where Borodin gets shot, but left whether he died ambigious....then showed Dr. Grant with an oh so slight Russian accent...how awesome would that have been?? woulda kept ppl wondering for years!
haha nice! funny thing is...in the book is not Borodin that dies but Kamarov I guess they had to make a sad part in the film...because by the end you come to like Borodin as much as Ramius heh
Back in the old soviet union you weren't allowed to cross states even though it was the same country. You needed legal papers allowing you to travel like that. That's why he asked if he could go state to state with no papers.
Most countries (not just commie ones) consider their citizens not people but resources subject to government management. In such countries (like Germany or France for example) you have to register your address with the police and carry an ID card at all times.
In modern Russia people still need an "internal passport" to travel in their own country.
Not necesarrily, My father was easily able to travel through East Germany and Poland to get to Czechoslovakia with no trouble at all.then again, they wanted foreigners for their hard currency.
So he DID survive the shot on the submarine. It's great to hear he got to Montana, got rid of the accent, earned a PhD in something-ology, became a respected professor, and went to Jurassic Island.
Lol. He sure did. Got his PhD in paleontology and had a very good life. It was sad he died in Red October. I love loyal 2nd in command characters. So I wanted to see him have a happy ending.

Just think about Nazi Germany in 1932-45 and how they would always ask citizens for their papers.
