One thing you can never say about Nicolas Cage is that he doesn't give a performance his all. No matter what the role is, no matter how poor the writing or directing, he goes right ahead and owns it.

In the commentary he mentions that he always say in comics etc. crying written as 'boo-hoo' and laughing as 'ha-ha', so in this movie he made an effort to actually do it that way. He can be hit and miss, but he's always thinking about what he's doing and being creative. In a comic role like Vampire's Kiss it can turn out brilliantly - and it did.

Look, Nic Cage does NOT take his movies too seriously, therefore he does not care about his acting in some of his szenes. Most Cage movies have at least one moment where he just goes crazy and completely overacts like he does here...its his thing you know. You may argue that this is not proessional or whatever but I find it damn entertaining and so do many others. He is an actor who has his unique style and he is very recognizable which is important for the showbiz. I respect him for that!

I think that many people underestimate Nic Cage as an actor because he is in so many typical blockbuster movies. The the type of movies, which are often entertaining visually and superficially but often not with that much depth to them. But that doesn't take a away from his skill as an actor. Bad Lieutenant for example was great and Cage's acting was spot on.
He can make ANY phrase REAL. From "Could you cut the chat, A'hole?" to phrases like "Drop the teddy bear", "I am like a prickly pear!" or "I'm a vampire, I'm a vampire, I'm a vampire"
I hate Nicholas Cage too, but using a fake sob from a 'dark' comedy movie is in no way an accurate representation of his abilities. It's meant to be funny.

What do people expect him to do, have a quiet sniffle in a corner? Or a normal sob or wail? Nicolas Cage has done some great movies, both serious and completely hammy - Problem is he seems to take almost any script that falls into his lap, much like other decent actors out there.
People who think Cage is a bad actor clearly knows nothing about movies. The man can play anything the material requires. You want funny, check Raising Arizona, you want dramatic, watch Leaving Las Vegas. I could go on but you get the point. I personally feel blessed to have been alive throughout the careers of some superb actors/actresses, and Nicolas Cage is right up there with them. :-)

A bad actor would never act good in more than one or two movies (Adam Sandler, wich is a bad actor, was really great in PUNCH DRUNK LOVE, for example, but never acted as good since then). It's not meant to be funny - It's meant to be absolutely pathetic, which it is, and is taken humorously because, well, it's pathetic... The guy is going completely batshit insane... What do people expect him to do, have a quiet sniffle in a corner? Or a normal sob or wail? Nicolas Cage has done some great movies, both serious and completely hammy - Problem is he seems to take almost any script that falls into his lap, much like other decent actors out there.

People who think Cage is a bad actor clearly knows nothing about movies. The man can play anything the material requires. You want funny, check Raising Arizona, you want dramatic, watch Leaving Las Vegas. I could go on but you get the point. I personally feel blessed to have been alive throughout the careers of some superb actors/actresses, and Nicolas Cage is right up there with them. :-)

If anything, I think it would take great skill to do over the top as, well, over the top as Nicolas Cage does. And you're right, somehow he has managed to play a variety of different characters despite/in spite of being always being himself. What do you expect from a Coppola? :)

@UncomfortableSilence in my opinion cage has done 5 or 6 good films out of a career 68, that's not a great record. the films that he has been good in have all been directed by extremely talented filmmakers (the coens, lynch, herzog, jonze / kaufman) and they clearly picked him for a specific reason. maybe they knew that they could get the best out of him. but left to his own devices and he'll make the fucking wicker man every time. if he needs that much guidance to be good, he can't be that good

A bad actor would never act good in more than one or two movies (Adam Sandler, wich is a bad actor, was really great in PUNCH DRUNK LOVE, for example, but never acted as good since then). Cage acted brilliantly in a lot of movies, like RAISING ARIZONA, LEAVING LAS VEGAS, FACE OFF, BAD LIEUTENANT, ADAPTATION. And I'm not saying 'good acting', I'm saying amazing acting. Seriously. He can be funny, he can be dramatic and he's really charismatic.But he's like Sam Jackson: every movie is ok to be in.

Cage is fucking awful. I can only stand him in "Gone in 60 Seconds". that was a good movie, but not because of him. well, maybe partially thanks to him for not overacting and not standing out in general. he sorta just sat there, which worked for the best and didn't end up spoiling the movie. he fucked up lord of war though. that movie had a lot of potential, but all actors sucked a huge DICK.

Watch him in Leaving Lass Vegas, in Bringing out the Dead, and BL:Port Call New Orleans, that is extra ordinary piece of acting. Look at him in a blockbuster movie like "Face Off". Remember the scene where he says "I want to take his face off" and everyone around him is laughing, and he wants to cry, but is trying to pretend? Yea, you try doing that when your alone (not even among many ppl).
