nice work, very impressive. I've just processed my first years batch of apples to yeild 14 gallons, on a home made wooden construction press. I'm now very inspired by the technology utilised in your video! the scratter is definately more use than a pick handle for smashing apples! next year will be a lot bigger and better for me, now i've had some experiance and inspiration! i hope you enjoy the vdieo i made of my process
Congratulations on a successful pommage (?) 2010. Sad news about the press but the scratter is work of art and design. Is the cider just for home consumption?
I also underestimated the juice we got. There was a third day. 380-400 litres in total which is a lot and will last a year or more so I'm quids in already. Hurah!
heres an update about the press. Its broken beyond repair! Even though we welded a 20mm plate on the underneath we managed to bend it. I could not believe it. We bent two of the thredded bars on one side and twisted the top so much it cannot be fixed. That includes the 20mm plate. A sad sad time.
@MrServecool I know that stinks for you but in retrospect do you think that at any certain point that you might could have made a mark on the upright and stopped at that point?I mean I know the object is to get the juice out of the apple and you have or had a great system to do it with but I would think the point would be to get what you can without the mechanical failure for best results.I'm just sorry this broke on you.
@tappakeggaday1, Thanks but it was a case of if it could not take it I did not make it right!. It was always designed to achieve a very high psi and I just needed to get the right stuff together. I heard pro gear does about 170psi. Check out the 2011 videos. a really strong big press and proper cheesecloths and we got there for sure. 190psi with no damage and good recovery rate of about 60%, limited by the scratter now not the press. You need a porridge like pommace, even finer than we have!
@MrServecool I'm still sorry it broke. it looked like a decent set up and by the look of how much you had in the barrel it looked like a lot of juice.
I am hoping someday to do this myself and with pears, ive made plenty of wines and ales but never a cider and I love cider.I sincerely hope that if you build another that it works great for you as I would like to see more post.great video
What did it taste like?.

tasted great but still room for improvement. The apple taste was good. a little acidic from the wild apples but good.
