In America, there's just more emphasis on low-brow comedy - slapstick, etc. with little real intelligent content. British/Australian humor, at least in my experience, tends to be more understated and more intelligent. I prefer it.

I guess the issue is that comedians need to have more faith in the idea that comic ideas done intelligently will accumulate an audience. Appealing to every person isn't really feasible, and adjusting for the assumption that people are poorly informed is like adjusting a school curriculum to the pace of the slowest student.
