#1) Why is a controversial viewpoint necessarily stupid? Frankly, I see it in the exact opposite light. If we aren't allowed to voice controversial opinions and had to conform to the accepted norm, now THAT would be stupid. Imagine she had the stage and attention of the media in 1850. I think her comment is consistent with the "hatefulness" of her standard comedic remarks and if her fans enjoy those I'm willing to bet the vast majority laughed at this (or at the very least were willing to stomach it).

Kathy is a comedian. Her primary goal of that speech was to make people laugh. Secondly, she poked fun at how the name of Jesus is overly-invoked throughout society. Thirdly, she knowingly offended people. Take a look at modern comedy, nearly every joke is offensive to some group of people. The only difference in this instance is the opinion under attack is that of a majority who is unwilling to "laugh at themselves" and take a single stab of disagreement.
