  • The lyrics here suck... very much...

  • I'm sorry but I have to agree with the majority here, this just doesn't work in English. This pales in comparison to France Gall's version, also I feel this version is really emotionless. In general I would have to say this is quite a poor attempt.

  • I think it was Decca records that asked/ told Twinkle to record this, back then you had little choice

  • this song so doesnt work in english.

  • Love it.

  • 1:19 SOLOOOOOO!

  • Good, but it lacks the driving energy of France Gall's original.

  • "Ha-ave it all", FUNNY!

  • Very good cover. Good version of the lyrics

  • This is a really good verison!

  • Very good version, the trumpet solo in the middle fits very good. Probably the best one after the original French version by France Gall.

  • French version is most powerful but this version is nice and keep the original sense of the lyrics.

  • wow, i never expected a cover of this in English

    merci de partager P'M ~

  • this is my grans school freind

Lynn ripley known as twinkle coz she always had a twinkle in her so her dad said

  • french is better... but I like the vid still :), thx for sharing

  • err, wow the lyrics are very different 0.0

  • Yes, but they capture the spirit quite well

  • I prefer the french version!

  • This is good but the France Gall version is much better . As other poster said , Twinkles version is not helped by banal English lyrics '

  • you're right, France Gall's version is much better :) The lyrics in english are not the same as in french.

  • let's try to come up with some better english lyrics.

I am just a singing doll

    Just a sawdust doll

I sing my songs as if they were real

but deep inside I've no idea

  • Better lyrics? These are even more self-deprecating than those Twinkle sings. Could Twinkle have had the power to tone down the lyric?

I am quite sympathetic to France Gall. She was right to have a problem with Gainsbourg giving his teenage singer manipulatative double-entendre lyrics she didn't understand.

  • my goal was to come up with english lyrics that fit the tune and were as close to the original french lyrics as possible. i wasn't trying to make a feel-good translation that put france gall in a better light.

  • I didn't mean to criticize you for correctly translating the lyrics, and should have made that clear. I did criticize Gainsbourg for having a teenage singer sing lyrics that she didn't understand and that make her look manipulated. I don't have to same problem with the Twinkle lyrics, maybe because they are banal.

  • its not like the french which i think is better but i must say i kind of like this song, its not that bad!!

  • Good version!

  • Um, is this even a little bit like the original?

  • It's not that bad, but the French version is WAY better.

  • Did the French version ever make it in the States?

  • no. non-english songs hardly ever chart in america. sukiyaki is a rare exception. i still don't understand how that one made it to number 1

  • Boah...that is really BAD..the english text ruins the song.

  • Not to be sung in English!

  • Its horrible in english !

Vive la langue de moliere !!!!

  • It's terrible in English. The music is phonetically French.

  • VEKI18CRO: No, it's not the original of "poupée de cire, poupée de son" performed by France Gall and written by Serge Gainsbourg... it's a French song !!

  • serge gainsbourg was like a character from Oscar Wilde!

  • is this the original interpretation of Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son?

  • i love this song ^w^ , the franch old version is a little better

  • C'est une version très jolie de Poupée de cire, poupée de son. Mais je préfère mille fois la version de France Gall =D

  • I love this song <*33 ;D

  • thanks for posting this. there are a lot of remakes.

i am disappointed in people having to be so rude to a remake.

the point of it is to capture the mood and lyrical similarities of the original, not be spot on, if it were it would not flow right. is this available for download?

  • Exactly. Translating word for word is pointless as it wouldn't rhyme or fit in the music.

  • Not only that but, when a song is translated, they say you have to translate the words to the reality of whatever country that language corresponds to. At times, the translations are hilarious.

  • p.s., love the cover, and thank you very much for sharing it!

  • One of the lyrics, I believe, is not "boys on the lurk never speak to me", but is in fact probably "boys only look, never speak to me".

  • Woopsie! I'll add it to the description now.

  • i didn't recognize it - yeah the remake is so different but it must normal -

  • ooh okaaaay sorry then !

  • but may be it's because u turned the translation into a song . but when u translate literally the french lyrics it's different

  • It's from the 60s.

And it's only a remake of the original.

  • I agree with you. From the little I understand of France Gall's version, the lyrics are different. No where in the song do you see the lyrics "wax doll/sound doll" or "blonde hair" as heard in the original French version. You do, however, see the word "doll" being used. Stuff like this always happens when a song is translated into another language.

  • excuse me but there r a lot of translation mistakes .

  • It's much better than this Italian version I heard

  • i love the french version, but i like this one too. i can sing to it, since i cant speak french ^ ^

  • i cnt speak french but i can still sing it

  • It sucks, the lyrics are completely different in French... No i'm-famous-but-im-hollow shit. And her singing is terrible. The French version is so much better !

  • There is at least some similiarities - not knowing about boys, feeling alone, etc.

  • i agree

  • Les paroles en francois ont rien a voir avec les anglaises!

French's lyrics are NOT like the english'one. It's not the same story at all!

  • The French version of this song is one of my favorite songs of all time, even though I can't understand French. It's really weird to hear it in english and to be able to understand the lyrics. I like the french version much better but this one is cool too. Thanks for putting it up. Twinkle is sort of an obscure 60s singer, so this must be pretty rare.

  • great cover

  • this song is so truth i can notice those girles at the bars an i know tht they are complete alone...

  • The France Gall version is better, but it's cool to hear this rare recording of the English version.

  • Well,he's dead! Why can't she just get over that "Les Sucettes"?It's not Gainsbourg fault that she didn't get it!She was old enough! She doesn't talk about the song which she owes everything just because of that?Wow,what's a grudge France!

  • why do france gall refuses the speak about the song and the contest?

  • I'm not too sure. Maybe because of her severed relationship with Gainsbourg (the writer).

  • it's a good translation of the french lyrics! Do you know if france gall sung that english cover?

  • I doubt it. This version is pretty rare in itself, and I'm not aware of France singing much in English.

  • the rumor want to france gall has well sung this version! but I've never heard!!!

Few people have got it but they doesn't want to give it!

The best is to ask at france gall herself!!!

  • She refuses to talk about the contest and the song in public :-(

  • So I will speak only in the presence of my lawyer!!!

  • I think this version captures the mood of the French lyrics fairly well.

  • Esta bien esta en inglés pero me gusta más la francesa por que es como mas dulce xDD

  • Totalmente de acuerdo con FibonacciPrower!

  • I like the original French version better. And I don't even speak French...

  • muy buena la version...
