God i love these trucks! I just got a 2002 Limited 2WD 7.3L (that might be fun come winter). Any noticeable or common problem I should know about? It has new 8 new injectors on it already and brand new waterpump. Thanks and nice rig!
@MrDiesel1996 yes! Preheat. Usually on a cold day you would need to have the block heater plugged in to get the Diesel engine good to go. It's rough on these engines to start cold like this.
@MARINESARETHESHIT I hope you actually know what you're talking about.. The reason they are so hard to start in cold weather is because they rely completely on compression to make the power stroke. (Yes, one of the four strokes to an engine.) Diesels do not have sparg plugs, and because the fuel does not burn as good when it is also cold itself.
That sure started quick for 20 degrees and no glowplugs. My 6.5 wont do it that fast, but then again it has old worn out injectors and its indirect injected. Its by no means hard to start tho even in the cold.
GM did to make a 5.7 liter diesel. They took a regular old, I think Olds, small block chevy block, upped the compression, threw on some different heads, and made a diesel. It was a failure, they broke down a ton and had hardly any power.
oh. that mustve been back when they first started experimenting with diesels. ive never heard of that. i gues its just because it was never popular. but thanks for the info.
Yes, I remember them trying that.. Utter failure and a waste of money... I never like the 6.2ltre diesel they made, if I have the motor size right..I've always owned silverado's, and thought aboutgetting a duramax, but I just don't haul enugh weight to warrant getting one..
it was based on their 5.7L gas engines. it was beefed up everywhere except where it counted. the V6 olds diesels were based on gas engines too but they got a extra head bolt for each cylinder they were ok engines. the 5.7 didnt get any extra bolts so the heads didnt quite have enough clamping area. too bad.
Neither the 5.7L or the 4.3L were based on gas engines. Anyone who makes this statement knows nothing about the old 350 diesels. They shared the same general dimensions of a 350 Rocket, but were totally different inside. I've rebuilt 3 of them and they are decent engines for a passenger car or light truck. Nowhere near as powerful as modern engines, but not the trash that people think they are.
Not completely true. GM did take the old tried and true 350 CHEVY and convert it to diesel for a year or two before they came out with the beefed engines designed to be diesels. I haven't seen any in years, but racers used to get the 350 diesels and build up super high compression gas engines.
The 7.3 powerstroke turbodiesel holds a total of 18 quarts of oil, 15 in the engine and three in the high pressure system which actuates the fuel injectors. Most people think it only holds 15 because thats all it takes to fill it back up since the other oil doesnt drain out, you have to do it manually.
It holds about 16 quarts. Yeah, it's pretty big, but the engine holds it's heat for a long time in the winter. No, we don't add any between oil changes, it doesn't seem to consume any oil.
You should fab up a single 5" exhaust stack that come up from the right side of the vehicle just in front of the side mirror and goes about a foot above the roof. Id be the first Excursion with stacks!
why did it move forward when it started?
lots of torque?
fordsmopars4lif3 1 week ago
A normal oil change is a little under 15 qts with a new filter on a DI motor. Hence the reason ford sells the diesel in 5 qt jugs.....

@MrDiesel1996 its called a block heater to preheat the block so it starts easier

This is a ford not a Chevy. Ford has 7.3 6.0 and 6.4. Chevy uses duramax
Nickgarage 2 years ago
ford also had a 6.9 before the 7.3
