@DiscoRByrno That's a bit of a generalization. Christianity and the Bible didn't actually cause the crusades. The crusades happened because of a corrupt Pope and the power the Catholic church had over the army. Just because someone stabs someone with a knife, doesn't mean the knife is at fault.
Also, you have to remember that the Crusades were conflicts between the Catholics and the Muslims. And the Muslims had their own army and even had their own empire.
Money (greed) has driven many a good person to do bad things. Desperation has driven many a good person to do bad things. And lets not forget crimes of passion. If everybody were gay, procreation would still be possible. Look at all the gays that do have children of their own making now. However procreation would not be possible if everybody were female, or everybody were sterile. Lame analogies.
Homosexuality is actually more common in nature than people think. But the argument of "what if everyone was gay/lesbian? then the human race will perish because no one is going to reproduce" No, because we are biologically programmed to reproduce, and our mechanism of reproduction is primarily dependent on our sexual reproductive organs. Homosexuals can reproduce offsprings due to the advance in reproduction technology, but the principle of which does not move away from the said paradigm.
The Christain faith is to be excepted by faith! Theirs millions and millions that no this in the world today. The assurance of things hoped for,the conviction of things not seen! Christ changes lives,,,ive seen it over and over in my personal life .Don't need proof to validate God,,,period. I know enough what a society without God results in. Communist Russia,China,Nazi Germany,Middle East countries.Be thankfull you live in a non- war torn society under God. Wake-up!
I know my bible very well,,,45 years +,no where buddy does it,anyway shape or form,,, point to!!! ((Religion)),,,Don't argue with me,,,or otherwise prove it!!! But you obviously you don't know the scriptures like i do,do you now? Next question,or don't waste my time! Let me refresh your memory,,,without the bible their would be no faith(christian) that is. And we wouldn't be discussing this otherwise now would we???Authority,,,the bible is my issue period! Thx.
@flatop59 You don't get to cop out by redefining your religion as a 'personal relationship with Jesus'. Islamic men could do the same by saying they have a 'personal relationship with Muhammad'. You are a member of the Christian religion, and there are many, many atrocities that can be laid at the feet at the followers of Christ.
@TheGeneralCritic Wrong! If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, the persons religion is worthless, religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the father, is this, to visit orphans and widows in the affliction, and to keep one self unstained from the world.James 1:26-27.. That's what the bible says about religion. ((Religion)) has no part of the true faith,,,period!
@flatop59 I don't know why you're quoting the Bible at me. The Bible is not an authority on this issue. Christianity is a religion as a religion as defined:
Religion: (n.) A collection of practices, based on beliefs and teachings that are highly valued or sacred; any ongoing spiritual practice one engages in, in order to shape their character or improve traits of their personality.
A 'relationship with God' also falls under the definition of religion, according to the above definition.
@TheGeneralCritic Because i base my life on it, (the bible),, or like the tools of my trade for 35 years in the wall& ceiling systems ,and i base my experience in years of music theory applied to guitar (tools of the trade)!!! Is that a good enough answer!!!! What might i ask do you base your moral standards on?
@flatop59 I base my moral standards on the same moral standards that we, as a society, have been discussing, refining, and thinking about for hundreds of years. It is the moral standard that realized that to keep slaves was immoral, so it freed them; the moral standard that realized to oppress minorities was immoral, so it equalized the playing field; and it's the moral standard that is now realizing that to oppress homosexuals is immoral, so we are now in the process of fixing that.
@TheGeneralCritic Huuu? The origins of morals, passed down from where??.Whats slaves, homosexuals got to do with it?!!!The laws, murder, stealing, ect.Where did they come from,,,,Better yet,,where did the 10 commandments come from? And if you do extensive research, the laws came from the 10 commandments. But you will deny that of course.Reason,,you reject Gods authority for your-self and society.
Religion makes the world a better place? Islamic religion slams planes into the World Trade Center in ((all in name of God))! Christian organizations don't! Stop centering out the Christian faith! And yes Islam is being excepted in America.Address that problem!
I'm an athiest, and while i don't really care what other people do i don't support being gay. really. just because physically its not what we were made to do, g spot in the ass or not. for the procreation of our species being straight is the way to go, thats all.
@LOGIC42369 I'm an atheist too. And yeah, not only am I against gays I'm against males in general. Because males can't procreate by themselves. Come to think of it, I'm against females too. Females can't procreate by themselves either. So basically I'm against all people!
"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion"
-Steven Weinberg
The bible (and other religious text I've studied) are morally redundant. The things they tell us (don't lie, steal, or kill; help the poor, ect) are things we would have known were right or wrong anyway. If anything, religion destroys the conscience by convincing people they would not have been moral without it.
well when you do go to skool 5 times a week we believe what teachers and prof inject in our brains, and if we didn't we would get punished with bad grades lol
Whilst Julius Caesar did burn down one of the main buildings, the Library was massive and was more of a complex than a single structure. the collection was largely intact and it wasn't until 391 that the Libraries collection was destroyed following the Decree of Theodosius by the Christian Roman emporer that banned all pagan practice - The Bishop of Alexandria Theophilus used this to justify destroying the Library entirely.
@neverfearchrisishere SO what you're saying, is that destroying the head and torso of something isn't really destroying it, but merely setting the rest up for destruction...?
Destroying a main part of something is usually classified and destroying the thing entirely. Try destroying 75% of a car, and then try selling the rest of the car...
@CrowdControlFTW You have a library of 70000, after the fire the collection is believed to of contained 40-50000 books, and a hundred years later there are reports that they were still collecting new works. So more of a case of a man that has lost an arm is still a man.
There are multiple historical references to the Libraries of Alexandria being the greatest archives in the world post the Julius Caesar incident.
The Bishop ordered the Library destroyed to reinforce his control on the city.
@CrowdControlFTW Well it did help to keep Europian countries from attacking each other quite as much as they would of otherwise, and helped to keep trade routes open.. So its definately had some positive political benefits. Also free school &healthcare was first began by christian charities.. so its not all bad - but yes, they;ve done alot of damage over the years.
I'm a Christian, and I certainly agree that everything needs to be thought out for yourself. Well, better yet, if Christianity in particular is confusing you, see what God has to say in the Bible, and through your life experiences. That is what God speaks through. He also speaks through other people--"Therefore, test everything and hold on to what is good." (1 Thess. 5:21) Also: I began to groan when the caller said that homosexuality is gross. Not all Christians are that close-minded.
"I'm a Christian, and I certainly agree that everything needs to be thought out for yourself."
+
"if Christianity in particular is confusing you, see what God has to say in the Bible"
=
Contradiction.
Thinking for yourself can only happen inside your own head. If the bible or God himself is what you base your views on, you are not thinking for yourself.
Have you have considered that your morality with regards to homosexuality is because you yourself are moral as opposed to your religion? Because it's crystal clear in the Bible what God thinks of homosexuality.
Moderates, like you, are enablers of the fundamentalists.
@DR000 You do have a point, but my desire to not judge homosexuals comes from God and the relationship I have with him, not from my own train of thought. There are 2 verses in the entire Bible that speak about homosexuality. There are many, many more, however, that speak about God's love, acception of all people, having humble hearts, never thinking ourselves better. What many Christians today seem to forget when it comes to homosexuality is that God loves EVERYONE & wants a relationship w/ them
Again, it seems like you're picking and choosing. You are assuming that since God allegedly states his love for everyone many times in the Bible, it somehow supersedes the clear message that homosexuality is an abomination.
Have the read the Old Testament? God is quite the genocidal maniac, who endorses rape and murder.
@switchfooter101 So your decision to treat all people equally had to come from your god? Funny, I worked that out on my own.
At any rate, do you really follow the idea you set forth? Do you not think yourself better than child rapists? Do you not think we should judge and sentence them? It doesn't make sense that you forgive gays for their 'crime', but not them.
It's you, you know that homosexuality isn't bad, don't credit god for it.
Wars over, or because of, religion were completely unheard of until monotheism, christianity specifically, showed up in Europe and started forcing the pagans to convert. This in turn started the Viking raids. The Vikings were, in a sense, pirates. but they would only raid christian establishments, taking the money from the church, and give it back to the people that the church duped. Christians then were the same thing as Muslim extremists are today.
@TheOdinSeeker No religious wars before monotheism huh? You sure about that? I'm sure you're not. We do not have the history of the native Americans, and history is written by the victor anyways. Some losing sides could have considered some wars to be religious, but after they lost the victor changed it to make them look more tolerant to the outside world.
There was an ancient war in India (that may or may not have happened) that was over religion too.
religion causes war and hate. it has set us back years . W einvented religion because we are insecure about death, we cant accept death. so we invent religion so we dont have to face facts that we are going to die eventually
The very minute you decide something is wrong or unjust, (in this case homosexuality) because "it's just weird" you need to take a good long look at your position.
Tracie is such a joy to listen to. So sharp and incisive, but still with some of that unflappable positive outlook you usually only see in the the most brainwashed and brain empty fundies.
Either you support the violence and brutality of the state for the sake of those who control the state, or you do not. You can say that it is all okay because the state is really important, but then you get to explain about the dead people. I don't really want to know about your theories. I want to understand about the dead people.
Mat, I luv ya dude, BUT in one show you said rights are what the state gives, but now you want to suport rights for gays? I belive we are born with rights. You can not give your life to worship of the state. No victam, no crime! No god, no state, no banks, no borders! Democricy=gang rape. State=theft, slavery, murder
@LuckyShitZu Respectably I would say that it's not really possible to make the claim that we are born with rights unless you believe in a God and some sort of universal objective morality. The only rights a person can have are those that they have the capability to defend, the state provides a mechanism to distribute defence by enforcing rule of law (this of course depends on the set up of the state)
Second coming of my son 21st century style to lift all up & out of it. Heaven moves with the times. All in darkness worldwide religious political dilemma proof earth Godless is evil. Even the birds know of my existence when they fly on my breeze. Words are very important when they hit my air. All say what you say when you say it & do what you do when you do it, makes no odds up here. You can not let heaven down only yourselves. @Number10gov OFFICIAL JC2011RTN UK EARTH
@crazyboyxx 1. Atheism IS a religion, by definition religion is, belief in divinity; system of beliefs. Atheist have a SYSTEM OF BELIEFS, like the belief that there is no God. Please research before debating. 2.Without looking I can tell you I am american, which has NOTHING to do with the matter at hand, stay on topic in a debate. Your an idiot so I wont be reading anymore of your comments...they will be deleted unread. Thanks and God bless you.
Atheism has one belief, which is more a disbelief: that there are no gods, not one, not many, none at all. That's not a system of beliefs, it's a single isolated belief. Theism isn't a religion, although many religion fall under theism, exactly like Budhism and many other religions and "life teachings" fall under atheism.
This one belief is the definition of atheism and every atheist agrees on it. On every other possible option of belief atheist can disagree with eachother.
@Quintinohthree Were you born slow or did you just evolve that way? IM NOT READING! Save it or get a journal. Your insecurities are concerning me. If you're offended....I forgive you. God bless.
Every religion is guilty of something. Some are guilty of more offenses than others. Islam has the Twin Tower Bombing, the Taliban, and gender separation.
Christianity has the Crusades, the Salem Witch Trails, and African American slavery.
Neither religion can claim to be "a religion of peace". It can present its good points as outweighing its bad points, but that's all. Don't call it a religion of peace through ignorance of past stains.
Peaple think they are good and they do what god said but at the end of the day are there still religion wars going on.. Thousends of peaple have been killed only because they have diffrent religion.
@gamefreak1000000 Peace? dude Western Crusades' insane bloodbaths against the Arabs were triggered by the decisive defeat of the Byzantine army in 1071 at the hands of the Turkish Seljuk army - the defeated Byzantine emperor, quickly appealed to his Christian rivals in Western Europe, i.e., Pope Urban II and his other "fellow" Christian rulers, to come to the aid of Constantinople by undertaking a "pilgrimage" or Crusade to "free" Jerusalem from Arab and Muslim rule. They were murderers!
@etherform66 Yeah, and arabs want to kill us all with rusty knives and blow the Earth up. They're sick in the head and if you are to be calling anyone murderers, it's Islam. After all, who caused 9/11? Muslims!
Who caused the death of millions of Soviet citizens in work camps? That's right, the communists. Does that mean all communists are bad? Of course not, communism didn't make them do this, it was the specific form of communism known as Stalinism.
Apply analogy to Islam.
Of course, the Quran actually teaches that this is exactly what these people should do. So yes, Islamic fundamentalism is dangerous, but so is Christian and Jewish fundamentalism.
@Quintinohthree You sound like NPR you know that? Christianity is a peaceful religion, despite the crusades in the past. Do we still kill people for not believing in what we believe? Of course not. Islam does. They are ran off a theocracy and they hate our Democracy. They kill anyone who doesn't convert. Their motto is "convert or die."
The U.S. is a Christian country, so there's proof that you're wrong.
Christianity is peaceful? The bible tells you not to be, you just believe otherwise and that's a good thing. I'm not talking about Christianity as a whole, but specifically religious fundamentalism
The US a Christian country? The constitution says otherwise. If you mean that most American citizens are Christian, it's just as much a female country, a white country, a right wing country.
And of course, the US is the least peaceful country around anyway, so that proves nothing.
@Quintinohthree Freedom and peace isn't free my friend. We are peaceful, despite the fact that we are in war against Al Qaeda (They started it with 9/11). If you want to bash religion, bash Islam. They cause the most suffering all around the world. Besides, just because our military is superior to yours doesn't mean we're war mongers. This country IS a Christian country because our founding fathers believed in God. Whatever or whoever told you otherwise is a bafoon...
@Quintinohthree No, the U.S was founded by non-secular people. You really need to learn your history kid because the liberal wackjob that taught you history in your university fed you a bunch of B.S. Then again, no point in arguing with an idiot.
Have you heard of the Treaty of Tripoli? It includes the following quote: "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,"
This treaty was later ratified unanimously by the senate making it federal law. That was in 1797.
So there's a law saying that the United States is not founded on the Christian religion.
@Quintinohthree Once again, B.S made by your professor feeding you B.S! If you want to run away like the pussy ass liberal that you are, then be my guest. Have a good life in your mother's basement while I actually enjoy life here on Earth and Heaven once I get there. I don't know where you will go, but God will decide and not me.
You can look it up. Federal law proves you wrong. If you want to deny it, you are picking and choosing from federal law. If you could actually do that, you could go out and do whatever you want without risking imprisonment.
I think that settles it.
Oh, I ain't a liberal, I'm not even right wing according to European standards.
I wish you a good and healthy life for the short time it will endure. I know it's not mutual but I don't care.
@Quintinohthree Islam is only worse than Christianity is because we secularists already dragged Christianity kicking and screaming out of the dark ages. That hasn't happened to Islam yet. It used to be that in Europe and America they burned witches - even though there was no such thing. They're still burning witches and subjugating women where Islam exists. Their time is coming.
In Africa you can still find Christians doing those things. It's not Christianity that has been dragged from the dark ages, it's the Christians, and I'm glad it was done.
Hopefully the Muslims will eventually catch up with the Christians abandoning all but their non-violent core doctrines.
@Quintinohthree I'm sorry, no one was talking to you. I direct my comments to individuals and that wasn't you. I will be deleting your comments unread stupidity is has no place, so don't give it one. Thanks and God Bless.
If you don't want to discuss with me, then just admit you can't win. It's obvious that individual you were directing your comments at just gave up on you anyway.
Thanks for the blessing by the way but Yahweh probably has better things to do. Like seeming non-existent and such.
If only I didn't need to write them. And who gave you the power to delete my comments anyway? Have you flagged them? It's not like it's spam or inappropriate anyway. Just contribution to the discussion at hand.
Whatever, if you don't want to discus with me that's fine. I know you can't convert me and I know that I can't give you more intelligence than the little you seem to have.
The only way to get a good person to do bad is religion? That is one of the most daft arguments EVER! No they can't ALL be wrong, atheism is a religion in itself. Admit to it or not. Good points though.
I completely disagree with Dillahunty. The whole premise of dividing the world into good and bad people is ridiculous. Everyone is capable of evil, some may have a greater predisposition towards it due to lack of empathy, sadistic personality traits etc. But even the nicest people can treat people horribly. Never heard of the Milgram experiment?
Dillahunty kind of strikes me as someone who has the common, but in my view completely unjustified, view that humans are basically at least largely good. I just don't think that's the case at all. Civilization is this thin layer that gets stripped away easily and the true nature of humans is actually pretty ugly.
@DiscoRByrno And Hitler killed millions of jews. My former friend brought up this same exact argument, and my comeback is this; People weren't that educated back then because if you go to a Christian private school, then they will say that the crusades was pointless. However, how does that make Christians bad? It doesn't and I think Atheists are the biggest jerks ever (the reason why I'm not friends with him anymore).
@Londron Well I don't count anyone who's a tyrant and kills huge masses of people like that for no reason. Therefore, I don't count him as a Christian.
A true Christian would follow the 10 commandments, and sign a contract with Jesus saying that he or she will follow the 10 commandments of the holy bible.
@Londron Wow, you are a fucking idiot! Hitler killed MILLIONS (over 1,000,000 [that's over 6 0's, or 7 digits]). How can you compare us, who sin like everyone else, to a tyrant who killed millions? A true Christian would never kill because they know what's going to happen to them. You can't say what if, because it's impossible. If someone says that a serial killer is Christian, then they're a fucking idiot because only atheists murder.
a) Very nice how you think you can redefine a Christian, I'm sure many Christians will like that. The problem is, definitions are there for a reason and a Christian is somebody who believes in Jesus and his message, nothing more.
Hitler didn't kill anyone directly btw. Unlike f.ex. Stalin.
b) Terrorists of 9/11 were atheists? Crusaders? The Germans who worked for Hitler?
c) It's nice that you, a pitufull human thinks he knows where God draws the line. I love that ignorance
@Londron You are a freakin idiot. I can't even talk to you because of how dumb you are. If you want to talk to me, then be sure to increase your IQ to at least 110 before doing so. Thanks!
you're the one spousing nonsense here and I just point it out. Not looking for an argument just trying to be correct; Not nice to keep spouting out lies like that :(.
Nerdraging makes me think you're the kid here.
and how about freaking responding to my question? I'm asking them for a reason. If you can't it seems that I win this argument to others.
Point out my flaws like I did yours or stop spouting out nonsense on the internet you coward.
@Londron You never pointed to any of my flaws you under IQ'd moron. You have no clue what you're talking about. You call yourselves free thinkers, but the flaw of that is the fact that you need a brain to think, and last time I checked; you have no brain!
@Londron Good, then go move into Europe and live in their godless nation shit-hole. I guarentee that the first year you would want to move back. The U.S. is a Christian country. If you don't like it, then move the fuck out of here.
@gamefreak1000000 You are the one smoking junk if you cant fit it in your head that this is a christian country. As for Europe, they are mainly Theocracies. Now shut up with this blatant stupidity you flaunt
@splicedenergy Most European countries are Godless, which is why the government has soo much power. For fucks sake they take 80% of the amount of money you work for, which is the reason why the majority of them don't work. So I think it's you who needs to know what you're talking about.
@splicedenergy I know what a theocracy is numb nuts! Most of Europe is a Godless nation that Government mostly controls. If everyone were Christians, they would be looking to God for everything and not the Government. Why does everyone trust the government there? Because they removed God from all text books, public ads, and advertisements. So how about you look up Socialism, which is what most of Europe is.
@gamefreak1000000 FYI, I do not have nuts. Secondly, America has been a socialist country since before the turn of the 1900, Thirdly, the entire world is godless since god is man made delusions. You have no case for you being a genius at any rate. Europe does better than we do on any given day because we have you dumbshits in excess.
@splicedenergy Yeah, you're an idiot. We're better than Europe because their economy is falling apart. The U.S. is a democracy you dumb shit. We have stupid socialists and progressives trying to ruin this country, but the American people are finally opening their eyes and are voting out all the frauds running in office. Just wait until 2012, then you will see. Oh the only problem with America is unpatriotic shits like you mouthing our country. I would kick your ass if I could.
@gamefreak1000000 Wake Up! If You're looking for a god for everything then You will be disappointed. Religions were invented by some people as a means to control many people. Europe is not a Country. I'm quite sure You have not read every text book circulated in Europe. Chances are You have never been to Europe. 1 problem in America is people like You who threaten to kick a person's ass who disagrees with You. You should stop talking out of Your ass !
If you are an extremist tree hugging eco-terrorist who thinks that the only way to correct humanity's mistakes is by killing all humans then yes, religion does make the world a better place.
religion has done the exact opposite it has caused hatred and many many deaths caused by not understanding their surroundings and assuming what they know about there religion is completly right. What about the crusades... ALL OVER RELIGION this guys a moron
Assuming that homosexuality is genetic (I'm no expert on this, so I'm not sure if this is true), then if religion/society hadn't repressed homosexuals for so many centuries, then they probably wouldn't have felt pressured to marry and had kids (i.e. live a 'normal' life). Therefore, that gene would not have been passed on from generation to generation, and the amount of homosexuals today would probably be a lot lower. Would religions have preferred this outcome?
@djanheuser but genetics pressured or not are continious. oppression is a whole different subject. blacks are forced to be slaves yet there are lots of them. natives are pressured in leaving their homes/land yet they still exist. people with mutations have been killed and oppressed yet they exist. genetics cant be oppressed unless you alter them into another genetic which is possible with our modern technology (cloning, artifical fertilizing, gender change).
@djanheuser besides if what you're saying is true then arent you implying that people shouldnt get married period. i mean people cant tell the difference between a gay or a straight unless they say so themselves. sure people dont need marriage to reproduce but people do hold it sacred even though its a civil right.
@NOVAGIRL666 I may be missing your point. I'm just suggesting that, assuming being homosexual is genetic, if gay people weren't pressured into living a lie (i.e. getting married to the opposite sex, which typically resulted in kids), then they probably wouldn't have had kids. I assume this would have had some effect on what genes propagated and may have shrunk the gay population. I don't think this would have made the world a better place, but religion may think so.
@djanheuser who gives a shit about religion and start caring for other people. if there is a god i doubt he cares if you waste a sunday preaching to him... as long as your a good person you will be able to go to heaven... assuming any of this after life biusness is even true
@p6a9u1l42 I'm not religious at all. I'm an atheist and I also support in gay rights. Anyways, my point was that if religion hadn't pressured homosexuals to masquerade as heterosexuals then this might have resulted in a reduction in the gay population, since I'm doubtful that it would have been as easy for, say, a gay woman to have kids 200 years ago as it is today. Therefore, in hindsight, religion may have preferred this outcome since I assume it would prefer a world without gay people.
Jeesh. Most of these callers have clearly never sat down and actually thought through their beliefs and opinions. How sad to be told by some obscure figure what you believe. What a waste of a brain.
The "what if everyone was gay" argument fails, because it's a hypothetical that will never come true. It's like asking "what if everyone was infertile?" And does this make it right or wrong? Furthermore, there's what--about 7 billion people? This poor planet might heave a big sigh of relief if there was a big outbreak of gayness in the human race. It'd be a humane way to bring the population back down to a reasonable level in a short time frame and solve a lot of problems.
Gays, evolutionarily, never would be able to dominate the world. If any part of gaiety is a choice, I don't see why the entire population choose it anyhow! So, panicking like 'omg gays are taking over the world!' is the same fear propaganda as any other 'anti-minority' propaganda. This time fueled by religious circles which disgusts me! Why can't gays enjoy the same rights as everyone else. Not like they try to turn people gay! That would be impossible!
Being bald or having a certain hair color is not the same as being gay. I am in no way religious but EVERYONE KNOWS THE PENIS GOES IN THE VAGINA. It's right because it's natural. End of story.
@toolband79 Well bro i think "they" kind of have the right to do whatever they want. But i do agree that its really weird and maybe awkward for us straight ppl to witness "gay stuff" LOL. But no hate there hahaha. True dick goes in pussy. But for each taste there is a color. If they like doing "it" with someone of the same gender you cannot post objection as long as they dont try to make a move on you LOL.
To this day, nobody knows who destroyed the Great Library at Alexandria. To claim it was burned by Christians is intellectually dishonest, especially when the strongest evidence leans toward Julius Caesar being the culprit, as an act of vengeance against his cousin Ptoloemy.
If the atheists asserts that matter &energy is all there is &ever have been, how can u Can be certain that naturalistically evolved human minds be trusted to give true beliefs about reality?
"With me the horrid doubt always arises whether the convictions of mans mind, which has been developed from the mind of the lower animals, are of any value or at all trustworthy. Would any one trust in the convictions of a monkeys mind, if there are any convictions in such a mind? Charles Darwin
« how can u Can be certain that naturalistically evolved human minds be trusted to give true beliefs about reality? »
Non sequitur. Theism doesn't give you anymore or any less reason to doubt the capacity of the human mind to know and understand reality than a lack of theism.
@dashan091 Do you have a better option than to trust the human mind? I'd love to hear it and why it is better...oh wait...you'd still be using your mind for that...damn.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you are going to have to come to grips with that one. Better to trust a mind that is doing it's best to figure out the truth I think. Remember that no primate is actually superior to you. They are also minds. That includes those primates who wrote any holy text you can read.
Can you imagine all the people that lived on earth before jesus and the bible came. They were really screwed lol ! Oh crap i have to wait 3000 years more for that jesus fellow to turn up untill then me and my future relatives will all go to hell because the bible doesnt even exicists yet. God will not give us any knowledge about hes own excistens for thousands of years. We are the screwed generations! Must be loads of Celts, Vikings, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians and Romans down there.
Fascinating. I don't think there are good and bad people so much. There ARE people who are genetically predisposed to unpleasant qualities, but they don't need to turn out bad.
I think humans are inherently opportunistic, and 'good people' are perfectly capable of being bastards. Like the nazi's... they weren't demons in human forms, they where normal human beings. That was what is so scary about them.
I feel as a Christian, the church spends too much time with stances on Abortion and Homosexuality. While the bible does say things on this, Jesus himself never spoke on them. Given that Jesus often threw out Old Testament ideas of his day, one can't really say what he would have said had be been asked about those issues.
What I think the caller and the host here miss is that with Christianity, the struggle is not wither God exists or the bible is true (a true Christian could indeed have personal doubt that God may exist) but instead of man's inability to be right in the eyes of a perfect being - that even by one's own definitions of right and wrong, they still fall short. If there was no god, even by our own definitions we would still be in our sin. The key is the acknowledgement of (personal) right and wrong.
i completely support gays, gay marriage, gay pride, i believe that everyone including gays should be treated equally becuase they are people like anyone else.
@NOVAGIRL666 I believe in this,, but im also going to argue that gay pride is hypocritical,, seperating yourself into a certain social group for a week,, for equality,, is like trying to lose weight by only eating fatty foods... its wrong
@TheBalfrog I have to agree. Gay "pride"? They're "proud" of being gay? They had no choice in the matter. It's not an accomplishment. That's like me being proud of having dark brown hair. It makes no sense.

Lame analogies.
pompousprick 2 months ago
Homosexuality is actually more common in nature than people think. But the argument of "what if everyone was gay/lesbian? then the human race will perish because no one is going to reproduce" No, because we are biologically programmed to reproduce, and our mechanism of reproduction is primarily dependent on our sexual reproductive organs. Homosexuals can reproduce offsprings due to the advance in reproduction technology, but the principle of which does not move away from the said paradigm.

flatop59 4 months ago
@flatop59 You don't get to cop out by redefining your religion as a 'personal relationship with Jesus'. Islamic men could do the same by saying they have a 'personal relationship with Muhammad'. You are a member of the Christian religion, and there are many, many atrocities that can be laid at the feet at the followers of Christ.

@TheGeneralCritic Wrong! That's what the bible says about religion. ((Religion)) has no part of the true faith,,,period!
flatop59 3 months ago

What might i ask do you base your moral standards on?
flatop59 3 months ago
@flatop59 I base my moral standards on the same moral standards that we, as a society, have been discussing, refining, and thinking about for hundreds of years. It is the moral standard that realized that to keep slaves was immoral, so it freed them; the moral standard that realized to oppress minorities was immoral, so it equalized the playing field; and it's the moral standard that is now realizing that to oppress homosexuals is immoral, so we are now in the process of fixing that.
TheGeneralCritic 3 months ago
@TheGeneralCritic Huuu? The origins of morals, passed down from where??.Whats slaves, homosexuals got to do with it?!!!The laws, murder, stealing, ect.Where did they come from,,,,Better yet,,where did the 10 commandments come from? And if you do extensive research, the laws came from the 10 commandments. But you will deny that of course.Reason,,you reject Gods authority for your-self and society.

The Church didn't destroy the library in Alexandria, Julius Caesar did that.
CrowdControlFTW 6 months ago
@CrowdControlFTW errrrrrm no. just no. Not true.
Whilst Julius Caesar did burn down one of the main buildings, the Library was massive and was more of a complex than a single structure. the collection was largely intact and it wasn't until 391 that the Libraries collection was destroyed following the Decree of Theodosius by the Christian Roman emporer that banned all pagan practice - The Bishop of Alexandria Theophilus used this to justify destroying the Library entirely.
neverfearchrisishere 5 months ago
@neverfearchrisishere SO what you're saying, is that destroying the head and torso of something isn't really destroying it, but merely setting the rest up for destruction...?
Destroying a main part of something is usually classified and destroying the thing entirely. Try destroying 75% of a car, and then try selling the rest of the car...
CrowdControlFTW 5 months ago
@CrowdControlFTW You have a library of 70000, after the fire the collection is believed to of contained 40-50000 books, and a hundred years later there are reports that they were still collecting new works. So more of a case of a man that has lost an arm is still a man.
There are multiple historical references to the Libraries of Alexandria being the greatest archives in the world post the Julius Caesar incident.
The Bishop ordered the Library destroyed to reinforce his control on the city.

Well, better yet, if Christianity in particular is confusing you, see what God has to say in the Bible, and through your life experiences. That is what God speaks through. Have you have considered that your morality with regards to homosexuality is because you yourself are moral as opposed to your religion? Because it's crystal clear in the Bible what God thinks of homosexuality.
Moderates, like you, are enablers of the fundamentalists.
DR000 6 months ago
@DR000 You do have a point, but my desire to not judge homosexuals comes from God and the relationship I have with him, not from my own train of thought. There are 2 verses in the entire Bible that speak about homosexuality. There are many, many more, however, that speak about God's love, acception of all people, having humble hearts, never thinking ourselves better. What many Christians today seem to forget when it comes to homosexuality is that God loves EVERYONE & wants a relationship w/ them
switchfooter101 6 months ago
@switchfooter101
DR000 6 months ago

TheOdinSeeker 8 months ago
@TheOdinSeeker No religious wars before monotheism huh? You sure about that? I'm sure you're not. We do not have the history of the native Americans, and history is written by the victor anyways. Some losing sides could have considered some wars to be religious, but after they lost the victor changed it to make them look more tolerant to the outside world.
There was an ancient war in India (that may or may not have happened) that was over religion too.

@LuckyShitZu Respectably I would say that it's not really possible to make the claim that we are born with rights unless you believe in a God and some sort of universal objective morality.

They were murderers!

@Quintinohthree Islam is only worse than Christianity is because we secularists already dragged Christianity kicking and screaming out of the dark ages. That hasn't happened to Islam yet. In Africa you can still find Christians doing those things. It's not Christianity that has been dragged from the dark ages, it's the Christians, and I'm glad it was done.

a) Very nice how you think you can redefine a Christian, I'm sure many Christians will like that.
I love that ignorance

you're the one spousing nonsense here and I just point it out.
Londron 1 year ago
@Londron You never pointed to any of my flaws you under IQ'd moron. You have no clue what you're talking about. You call yourselves free thinkers, but the flaw of that is the fact that you need a brain to think, and last time I checked; you have no brain!
I think that's enough to point out your flaws.

@Londron Good, then go move into Europe and live in their godless nation shit-hole. I guarentee that the first year you would want to move back. The U.S. is a Christian country. If you don't like it, then move the fuck out of here.
(Disregard this if you're a pot smoking European)

@gamefreak1000000 You are the one smoking junk if you cant fit it in your head that this is a christian country. As for Europe, they are mainly Theocracies. Now shut up with this blatant stupidity you flaunt
splicedenergy 1 year ago
@splicedenergy Most European countries are Godless, which is why the government has soo much power. For fucks sake they take 80% of the amount of money you work for, which is the reason why the majority of them don't work. So I think it's you who needs to know what you're talking about.
gamefreak1000000 1 year ago
@gamefreak1000000 Look up a theocracy. Its for your own good.
splicedenergy 1 year ago
@splicedenergy I know what a theocracy is numb nuts! Most of Europe is a Godless nation that Government mostly controls. If everyone were Christians, they would be looking to God for everything and not the Government. Why does everyone trust the government there? Because they removed God from all text books, public ads, and advertisements. So how about you look up Socialism, which is what most of Europe is.
gamefreak1000000 1 year ago
@gamefreak1000000 FYI, I do not have nuts. Secondly, America has been a socialist country since before the turn of the 1900, Thirdly, the entire world is godless since god is man made delusions. You have no case for you being a genius at any rate. Europe does better than we do on any given day because we have you dumbshits in excess.
splicedenergy 1 year ago 2
@splicedenergy Yeah, you're an idiot. We're better than Europe because their economy is falling apart. The U.S. is a democracy you dumb shit. We have stupid socialists and progressives trying to ruin this country, but the American people are finally opening their eyes and are voting out all the frauds running in office. Just wait until 2012, then you will see. Oh the only problem with America is unpatriotic shits like you mouthing our country. I would kick your ass if I could.
gamefreak1000000 1 year ago
@gamefreak1000000 Wake Up! If You're looking for a god for everything then You will be disappointed. Religions were invented by some people as a means to control many people. Europe is not a Country. I'm quite sure You have not read every text book circulated in Europe. Chances are You have never been to Europe. 1 problem in America is people like You who threaten to kick a person's ass who disagrees with You. You should stop talking out of Your ass !

Would religions have preferred this outcome?
djanheuser 1 year ago
@djanheuser but genetics pressured or not are continious. oppression is a whole different subject. blacks are forced to be slaves yet there are lots of them. natives are pressured in leaving their homes/land yet they still exist. people with mutations have been killed and oppressed yet they exist. genetics cant be oppressed unless you alter them into another genetic which is possible with our modern technology (cloning, artifical fertilizing, gender change).
NOVAGIRL666 1 year ago
@djanheuser besides if what you're saying is true then arent you implying that people shouldnt get married period. i mean people cant tell the difference between a gay or a straight unless they say so themselves. sure people dont need marriage to reproduce but people do hold it sacred even though its a civil right.
NOVAGIRL666 1 year ago
@NOVAGIRL666 I may be missing your point. I'm just suggesting that, assuming being homosexual is genetic, if gay people weren't pressured into living a lie (i.e. getting married to the opposite sex, which typically resulted in kids), then they probably wouldn't have had kids. I assume this would have had some effect on what genes propagated and may have shrunk the gay population. I don't think this would have made the world a better place, but religion may think so.
djanheuser 1 year ago
@djanheuser who gives a shit about religion and start caring for other people. if there is a god i doubt he cares if you waste a sunday preaching to him... as long as your a good person you will be able to go to heaven... assuming any of this after life biusness is even true
p6a9u1l42 1 year ago
@p6a9u1l42 I'm not religious at all. I'm an atheist and I also support in gay rights. Anyways, my point was that if religion hadn't pressured homosexuals to masquerade as heterosexuals then this might have resulted in a reduction in the gay population, since I'm doubtful that it would have been as easy for, say, a gay woman to have kids 200 years ago as it is today. Therefore, in hindsight, religion may have preferred this outcome since I assume it would prefer a world without gay people.
djanheuser 1 year ago
Jeesh. Most of these callers have clearly never sat down and actually thought through their beliefs and opinions. How sad to be told by some obscure figure what you believe. What a waste of a brain.

Even if everyone was gay, we could still artificially inseminate in order to continue the human species. No one has to be straight.
rafaravioli 1 year ago
The "what if everyone was gay" argument fails, because it's a hypothetical that will never come true. It's like asking "what if everyone was infertile?" And does this make it right or wrong? Furthermore, there's what--about 7 billion people? This poor planet might heave a big sigh of relief if there was a big outbreak of gayness in the human race. It'd be a humane way to bring the population back down to a reasonable level in a short time frame and solve a lot of problems.
DandAinTac 1 year ago 2

@toolband79
"It's right because it's natural."
homosexuality occurs in nature, it's natural.
then again so does cannibalism, and rape, oh and the murder of children by their own parents.
nature and morality are separate things.

To claim it was burned by Christians is intellectually dishonest, especially when the strongest evidence leans toward Julius Caesar being the culprit, as an act of vengeance against his cousin Ptoloemy.
stoogemaniac 1 year ago
We have already figured out what causes a person to be gay.
In the end, we have learned that gay isn't a choice, it's just how someone's brains work.
That and we also know that evil choices has nothing to do with being gay.
Yes being gay does not help people make new generations, but I think gays will do straight sex/sperm donation to make babies.
Last comment is that we have too many kids as it is, and adoption is often better atm than creating.

XGralgrathor 1 year ago

Shavarnarak 1 year ago 3
I feel as a Christian, the church spends too much time with stances on Abortion and Homosexuality. While the bible does say things on this, Jesus himself never spoke on them. Given that Jesus often threw out Old Testament ideas of his day, one can't really say what he would have said had be been asked about those issues.

d00df00d 1 year ago
What I think the caller and the host here miss is that with Christianity, the struggle is not wither God exists or the bible is true (a true Christian could indeed have personal doubt that God may exist) but instead of man's inability to be right in the eyes of a perfect being - that even by one's own definitions of right and wrong, they still fall short. If there was no god, even by our own definitions we would still be in our sin. The key is the acknowledgement of (personal) right and wrong.

@TheBalfrog I have to agree. Gay "pride"? They're "proud" of being gay? They had no choice in the matter. It's not an accomplishment. That's like me being proud of having dark brown hair. It makes no sense.
