I have been looking into doing this exact same modification to my slim ps3. My particular unit only has 4 control wires coming off of the ps. 5v on two pins and 1.32 which rises to 4.72 when the unit is running on the remaining two. I have improved the air flow out of the cabinet and am adding metering to watch temp and current demand during game play. The ps is rated for 20 amps and I wonder how much it actually does draw.
I'm trying to mod the ps3 into a computer case powered by a 500w antec atx psu, as a permanent power supply, I'd like to keep the ps3 functioning as normal however...any tips? its an original fat 60 gb model. , I'm also going to use a large hard drive with a 12v mod.
All the people asked about it booting with nothing, yes the initial boot screen is displayed but it will quickly throw up an error without the HDD. The console won't even boot demos without a disk drive detected.
it's not power supply but corrupted software. . but if it's a fatty always add a higher memory SD card in the slot and it will add to the internal Memory (RAM) (I was told this by SONY Support Staff)
Excellent video! Not only did you demonstrate how to eliminate the PSU as a failure point, you also showed the system will boot without a hard drive, BD-drive or media reader. That's some HANDY troubleshooting info, IMHO.
Let me start off by saying, I LOVE YOU! This was an awesome idea. I used a 400 Watt for mine. The air coming out of my ps3 now is ROOM TEMPERATURE! I can't believe sony didn't put a fan or two on their power supply. That thing got so hot I burnt my hand on it. No wonder these things die. I'm going to make this permanent. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!
thanks for the video, helped for me, though I tested the psu succesfully, turned out, that the ylod has to be caused by something else, maybe the gpu(means it needs reballing)...just my luck
graphical artifacts are most likely due to a failure of the RSX, and may cause the YLOD. it is also the same problem as the xbox 360 RROD, and many, many modern PC graphics cards.
this method helped me diagnose that the power supply failed on my system. thanks for saying the voltage of each wire... there was no other documentation on that. i had to look up the wire voltage colour scheme online for the power supply and rigged it as up as you did. thanks.
FYI that 3V pin is 3V coming from the main board not from the power supply. I think that is the voltage that may be used to wake up the PS3 power supply from standby mode.
I happened to troubleshoot a "red beep after power press- to no blue- to-power supply click sound- to complete shut off - (NO RED)" thanks to your vid.
In my case, it appears to be the power supply, PS3 turned on normally with the atx I did the test with.
(YLOD/reflow repaired, internal fan modded,60GB launch PS3).
snow sounds like GPU may be overheating, I had a problem with an old PC video card exhibited same problem after it ran a bit and warmed up. I reflowed the vid card and voila problem solved.
This is a problem with your RSX (graphics). It will probably need reballing, your best solution. Look up reballing PS3 on here for more details. Hope this helps.
to zxxpyroxxz: question? i too am trying to rule out power supply issues on a ylod ps3. when i test the 12v part of the psu it checks ok, but when i check the secondary part starting from right to left i get 5v,5v,0v(ground),0v(ground),0v. you mentioned in your video the last one should be 3v. i've check with various multimeters and i get the same results 0v, do you think my psu is the problem?
If anyone can help, im having a problem with my 80gb BWC ps3 (its like the 60gb) ussauly when i turn it on i hear the fan turn on. one day i went to turn it on and i didnt hear the fan. so i went on as normal and after i started a game it beeped 3 times and said it was over heating. i took it all apart and found nothing wrong so i turned it on, this time out of the cases and found the fan doesnt work. i took a voltage meter and hooked it up and found no power going to the fans. can any help me?
Good video dude. i used this to turn on a broken ps3 and got juice and the ps3 turn on and works fine but the ps3 controller rumbles non stop anyone have any idea how to stop it?
My PS3 (fat 80GB) died. No lights, so power supply i think. I live in Ontario, Canada and Sony demands $169 + $30 shipping + taxes for a total of $224. Won't budge on their "flat rate" and I even got hung up on once when I tried to complain!
I don't have the green snow anywhere near as bad but it is noticeable. It shows at the XMB and in some games (FF13 for example) but then it doesn't show in other games...anyone have any ideas on that? I'm connected to a computer monitor with an hdmi-dvi cable and the monitor is HDCP compliant.
the reason there isnt alot of videos or info is because they are MORE RELIABLE than the xbox 360. there is a HUGE aftermarket for Xbox 360 repairs!!! i do repairs on my own for people that are out of warranty.
you said there is a 3 volt lead ? the power supply for pc if im not mistaken is only 5, 12 and ground right? im trying to fix an ebay purchased ps3 as well
i know the atx input on a pc psu because they are color coded. i talking about the pinouts on the ps3 power supply. if you watched the video he pointed out the voltages needed on the wires connecting to the board.
Awesome, I wanted to do this last year when my PS3 was broken to solve cooling issues, but I had no idea how. Someone actually did it finally but damn, that wiring is too complicated for me. Nice though!
finally ive found someone that was able to hook an atx power supply to the ps3, thank you so much. i was curious if youve ever thought about just running the ps3 inside of a computer case instead of the plastic it came in and with a water cooler, it might bring all sorts of new mods for the ps3.
The ps3 self diagnoses system should prevent you from seeing any display and give you a YLOD (when you attempt to power it up).
1 cause of YLOD is when there is a board short, or (possibly solder bridging in the RSX chip).
The perfect solution would be to reball the RSX chip. Sadly sony have made it very difficult to do that directing too much heat at the RSX chip, could cause solder bridging... It's your choice if you want to take that risk or not.
@leec1987 If you want to avoid solders from bridging you can use flux it prevents solders from bridging I have done this before so I know that its good for RSX chip.
I had the same problem as you. If you apply pressure to the top left corner of the RSX chip (no heatsync, just the board etc). it should boot. Both chips have built in temperature checking, there's no danger of overheating either of these chips during this experiment.
This is the same problem with the GPU on the 360 board. Applying pressure from beneath the board will fix that.
This problem can sometimes be solved with extensive precise directed heat to the RSX chip (1 minute on 300d).
Mine just has no video and no audio. sometimes just audio and no video. sometime a bunch of white snow with audio. and sometime it works fine.... for a little bit then a bunch of white snow
Hi - Does the PS3 still boot without the wifi module plugged in? Also, does it need the hard drive to boot?
The "green snow" is definitely a graphics RAM problem, or dry solder joints (most likely of all). It could also be caused by faulty RAM chips, but that would be quite unlikely.
dude i just fixed my bga chips on my board and played for a few hours then my ps3 did this excat same thing... if you figure this out let me know!!!!!!
Nice vid. Green snow looks like loose connection near, on or inside gpu. Hence why the software seems to boot up fine but display dodgy. Heat gun fixes as seen elsewhere my work. Good luck!
Hey, you posted this a month ago...does that mean you haven't figured out what the problem is yet? I've got a 40GB that YLOD'd on me and I ripped her apart and reflowed the motherboard, but that only gave me about an hour of playtime and then it died again. I'm going to replace the motherboard next because the second time I took it apart I noticed a slight burn/warp on the board. Anything else you sugest I replace while I'm there for a third time? Good luck on your console. Cheers!
dude my ps3 just fuked up and thats wat it does wen i turn it on....but if i leave it off for a long time i get a good 15 30 min play thats about it....i have a 60gb so my warranty is over...if u could help me ill apreciate it thankx alot..
In fact, I just check the rating for the Cooler Master 550W on ExtremeOverclocking website, and they say this one has 3 12volt rails, two of them gives 12 amp and one of the only 6 amps (continuous). Sure enough, with only the motherboard, you're not drawing 32 amps (original PS rating), but you may draw much more than 6 amps (3rd rail). If you have a chance, I suggest you plug an ampmeter in there and give us current rating for motherboard alone. (and with peripherals would be cool too!).
Two: You are lucky that your power supply is working fine with the PS3. MANY power supply may not start or provide correct voltage at all, simply because they do need a decent load on the 5 volt rail. Could be as high as 10% of rating. On 5 volt, that could mean 3 amps!!! With only motherboard, you're below that rating. But worst, most PC power supply will not provide many amps on 12 volt rail. Even if rated 32 amps, it could be split on many rails. So basically, it may not be a reliable test.
First, the fifth wire on the white connector is labelled "standby". So basically, I would not connect anything to it, and it should work. It's quite likely the signal that will wake up the power supply, so it's a signal coming FROM the motherboard, to the power supply (luckily, 3.3V should not damage the output of the IC on the motherboard) So try it without connecting this pin, and I'm sure it will still work anyway.
still having the problem...im kinda thinking its a cracked solder issue somewhere on the board....if i leave it off for a day, power it up, and keep a good big fan on it, i can watch movies, play games etc....but then if i shit off for an hour, turn off the fa, and turn back on, its starts to get crummy.
havent tried the cap or resistor....my ATX power supply is very consistant, not gonna get much closer than this thing does.
Who me? Hell yea i did, thats why i made the video....to be honest, i quite prefer running a standard atx power supply with this thing, its a hell of a lot less heat inside the ps3...thinking about finding some sort of mini external one...like maybe for a ITX computer, and just wiring it in so it sits on the floor next to my good ps3 i use for gaming.
yea, the ps3 power supply has no fan of its own, and its not terrible efficient...runs a bit too hot for my liking, but still withing an operable range...if you dont mind uglifying up your pretty ps3, you could just a hole in the side above the psu...attach a thin 80mm fan, and wire it to the 5v and ground leads i've outlined in the video
Most electronics run off 3.3v, 5v and 12v...or variations there of, such as 12 and 48v
It was just a matter of opening the case, turning it on with the PS3 power supply, measuring the voltages....then connecting the power pins from a normal atx power supply to the ps3
there is a pic of the pinout online for those needing a visual aid the link is below

by a cheap REWORK STATION from ebay and heat up the gpu till it resolders itself,
good fun, fixes xbox red ring, and zillions of laptops, very common on laptops. when ever a laptop fails always fry the gpu
