If you listen to Valéry Sauvage(luthval) you can clearly hear the difference. He plays a 6 course lute, I think he uses octavestrings on the 4th, 5th and 6th course. It gives the music(not the same recercar), as you say, another resonance.

Beautiful! Very nicely and sensitively played, but shouldn't it be done on a 6-course?
