To get one you need to undergo a security training class, then apply for a license and wait for the 28 day police inquiry. That's for long arms. For pistols and "restricted" weapons like ar-15s, you need another class and another permit. Plus, restricted weapons may only be used in firing ranges and you need a permit to take it out of your house, with information on the shortest route from your home to your firing range.
