  • I had arthroscopic done on ankle to remove bone fragments and to see how talus was. Tried Ultra sound to stimulate but to no success what was left of my talus eventually died from Poor Blood Circulation so I tried everything for 4 years. Took my doctor 3 to 4 months to come up with this creative way to give me some sort of normal life. It was done at a Kaiser Permanente Orthopedics dept in Los Angeles at Imperial Facility in city Downey Dr. Garbonie I think i spelled it wrong but it sounds

  • i need a ankle replacement and would love to get more infomation on this proceedure and details of who to contact about it, i have been diagnosed with having AVN of the talus bone (Avascular necrosis) due to blood vessles that attach to my talus bone being damaged when i had meningococcal and the loss of blood supply has caused my talus bone to deteriorate. my condition is very rare and there is nothing they can do to fix my ankle bone apart from fuseing the joint. i dont want a fused ankle :-(

  • @leejames1982 I hope this is of some help and support. I had a head on car accident that completely crushed my talus bone. After some surgeries and other options the bone basically died. Any kind of ankle replacment was out of the question due to the face that ever known technique included the Talus bone as part of the procedure. I waited as long as possible to find something for me. I was only 24 and wanted to live a some what active lifestyle.

Yet I did not find anything current for me.

  • @jmidesigns My orthopedic surgeon came up with a some what clever procedure. At the time no form of replacment was avalible to me so I was left with my last choice a complete ankle fusion. It is a fusion yet not one done normally.

2 Bone grafts one from my hip and my fibula about where the lateral malleolus is up about maybe 3 or 4 inches was cut off and lowered down numours screws threw from one side to the other and for added support 2 metal cages. They are cages normaly for people with

  • @leejames1982 Cont. from last post: :: crushed vertebraes to help stabalized there height and added suppport while the bone heals. I required 2 of those metal cages but they were placed in my ankle where the talus would normally be. Of course I do miss things I use to do. I don't regret fusion of ankle I walk normal we it appears I do until I tell or show people my ankle or lack of ankle it is now one big solid "L" shaped bone. I don't need to wear any speacial shoes or don't have a 6" heel.

  • @leejames1982 The reason I say this maybe of some help is because now all the space that was empty were the Talus bone would normally be is now one big bone that my body filled in with the help of the bone grafts. Normally doctors don't like to or want to keep doing surgeries in the same area scare tissue and so on. But now with all that bone there it is possible to go in remove some bone and now insert a metal replacment since it can now be attached to solid bone.

  • @leejames1982 That being said old replacments only moved front to back but the new ankle replacments they have on the market now have more range of motion. So doing the ankle fusion has now opened the possibility of an ankle replacment to move like I use to. Thats what I am thinking and presenting it to my orthopedic surgeon.

I guess it would be a 2-part operation step one fusion to allow body to regrow bone to fill in and step 2 remove some bone and insert ankle replacment. Hope is helps

  • @jmidesigns first of all thankyou for your reply it was a bit of a comfort to know that somone else has gone through something similar to my situation. your advice has been very helpful i never ever thought about that sort of procedure and i am wondering if my ankle specialist has thought about something like that and i will definetly mention what you have told me to my specialist and see if she could come up with something or even get an idea from it. so far all they came up with was... (cont)

  • @leejames1982 (cont) to try and do surgery to drill holes into the talus bone and try and re attach blood vessles and hope they take to the bone and re juvinate it somehow, but then after the latest scan results showed that the bone is too far gone and that prob wouldnt work as the AVN wasnt picked up early enough and had taken its toll. so now they are saying just keep weight off it and take it easy until they come up with a newer ankle replacement, or if the pain gets too bad it will be fused.

  • @leejames1982 but yeah im thinking surely there is another option or something or someone that knows of a better plan to fix it as im only 28 years old and i have alot of life left to live but they said because im so young ankle replacements wont last me long enough, but since my son was born 9 months ago i really want to fix my ankle now, not wait till im im older, i dont need to run when im old. once again thanx very much for your info and advice it is a great help.

  • @leejames1982 Now that there is planety of bone there from the fusion and the bone grafts. Now it's just the doctor needs to think out of the box and go in remove some bone insert the new ankle replacment and take time to heal and see where it goes.I mean worst case it will just be removed and fusied again. To me I do miss alot of things and it just might be worth the risk to be able to run or play with kids again. any info u need just ask. wish you the best of luck and always stay positive.
