the usa has not yet produced a world's best player, but the usa also puts most of its superior athletes into other sports. portugal(ronaldo), brazil(kaka), and ukraine(sheva) all have no national sport besides football.

in america we have our football, baseball, basketball, individual sport (track etc) and then football (soccer)... so of our best athletes, at most 1/5th of them play soccer, compared to all of those other countries best playing only soccer.

there are rugby leagues in the states. i actually played for a club in my area as a scrumhalf and winger depending on the lineup.

there isnt a professional rugby league because weve got a more violent padded "football" game that takes up the space rugby would fill. the USA could field one hell of a rugby world cup team if most of the behemoths and speedsters werent already playing our "football".

As an American... i believe i have the authority to shed some light on this subject. Almost every single American child, boy or girl, has played soccer at the youth level. Most play other sports as well, such as American Football or Basketball. American Football and Basketball are the most popular sports in the USA. The majority of athletic kids in the USA stop playing soccer when they get to High School. If the USA had stars like LeBron James or Reggie Bush playing soccer we could compete.
