I just thought of something US ships do not even have to be near iran to hit them outside the range of their missiles. First thing they do is get a sat in syncronis orbit,and then get the targets GPS coordinates programming the missiles to strike their targets. Hell they could use drones hundreds of thousands of drones to just Spam IRAN if they desired,operated from saudi arabia or another country. It's highly unlikely that these missiles could seriously hurt the US navy. A us carrier group consists of dozens of Aegis Cruisers & Destroyers with hundreds of SAM's. These missiles can easily be destroyed before reaching their intended target...

Having said that, the Iranian navy can seriously disrupt oil installations & other maritime traffic in the Persian gulf & should not be underestimated. In the event of hostilities the straits of Hormuz will be closed for international shipping...
