A friend of mine sent me a video of yours that was named How science saved my life"...either way it was a very polished peace of work and so I decided to scroll down and check out your first video's and they are really interesting to listen to. Its so strange to hear a clear voice of humor and reason thats devoid somewhat of what I'm usually used to hearing from atheist. Anyways...awesome story
Can remember when in highschool in the corner of the cantine we 'summoned ghosts'. When we asked the ghost to give a sign the lights in the whole cantine went out. Everybody ran except me, I tried to figure out what was happening, and about 20 second later the janitor comes walking into my direction. It suddenly became clear to me, if the lights are out and the janitor walks in my direction the light switch has to be close. And behind a curtain we as a group leaned against, was the switch. >.>
lolthings usually get blown out of proportion with a small seed a touch of fear and group mentality u can make people belive most anything. if youve ever seen derren browns seance its a simalar story. ohhh thanks for pointing me to the most obvious link that i somehow managed to miss :)
I like to tell this kind of stories to somone who is too supersticious... Nice healing of the mind. Pitty, but woften people reject facts, and remain with their believes.
I can't remember. It was over 30 years ago. I remember being amazed that the crowd as a whole didn't even seem to want to hear the explanation. It wasn't as exciting as the stories they were telling each other, and the other kids who weren't there. I'm not sure he was even there when I tried to explain. If I had to bet, from what little I remember of him, he probably figured it out on his own...once he'd calmed down of course.
What if I were to tell you, that I too was there, with a fake bat attached to an overhung string. I pulled one over on all of you! Now you can, once again, trust in the sincerity of group experiences :-)
It was more fun, and more educational, being there. I never trusted eye-witness accounts or pleas of "personal experience" ever again. I listen, ofc, but in the end their sincerity is meaningless, especially with a "fantastical" story. All that counts is EVIDENCE.
Dirty pebbles on a greenhouse roof is much less exciting than a giant bat. The golden rule of magic tricks is not to give away the secret. When you do a card trick and people are astounded by it, they like the mystery - the possibilities and cleverness. When you show them how it's done - pretty much any magic trick is mundane and people feel cheated. By explaining, you rob them of something in the entertainment.
Yup. Perhaps as the cameras become available across the world we may slowly find reports of the paranormal going down BECAUSE people film the events and analyze them more rationally afterwards before they report something supernatural. If the reports DO go down, we'll know why.
I saw a documentary on tv about something like this, but it was a series of tests to prove how unreliable eye witness accounts really are, same thing happened, they walked some people past an "alien crash site" on the ploy of a nature hike, then talked to them about it a month later and the stories were outrageous, lol.
Phil, you do realise, don't you, that you probably converted all those kids to a lifelong belief in the paranormal; damn you, setting back our non-belief agenda!!! ;D
The psychologist answer: Fear has a tendency to disrupt memory. Most strong emotions do this. Memory is quite tricky. It can be affected by somethign as a simple knock on the head, or something as complicated as emotion. I am not saying don't trust your memory, simply use Ockhams razor to try and explain what you remember. (ockhams razor: given a choice between two options, both of which adequately explain (whatever needs explaining) the less complicated ansewer is the truth.

The last couple of nights I've been watching some James Randi videos and this dovetails nicely with the things that he discusses.
Good stuff!

I used to do something similar, in an old abandoned insane assylum. It was awesome, we scared about 300 people over a summer by setting up "tours".

I'm willing to bet that evengelists pull these type of stunts at church or prayer meetings.

The difference being that I confessed and told them the truth almost as soon as I could. :)

Yes of course. LOL I apologize if you thought for one second that I would compare you to an evangelist!! That would be a horrible insult!

Nah. Relax. It never crossed my mind. I know you well enough and you know me well enough. :)
