Needless to say, WLS, the Chicago rock and roll giant at the time voted this as the worst record in the world...(jokingly)....but they kept playing it.
WOW, If I had any part in this recording, I would SWEAR TO GOD, I knew nothing about it, it is one of the most digusting lame recordings I have ever listened too
@MrThankYou0325 LOL Guess you had to be there. This eggplant is a metaphor for the wave of psychedelia sweeping the nation. Many other songs on the LP were banned from public play because of strong drug references, IE "How Lucin Ate". "Lucin was a Chinese man who half the time was straight. But on day for a special price he bought a bag of powdered rice. After just an hours wait, that's how Lucin ate." The LP was an underground party record. It was more about message than music.
I remember this band! I now have the CD. I liked the offbeat bands back then. I love "How Lew Sin Ate" from the same album. And "The Old Fruit Peddlar" love it!
Just bought a copy of this 45 by accident..I bought a few soul LP's at a yard sale last weekend and this fell out of the cover of one of the LP's. I'd never heard of it and came across this posting...Record info GoGo Record # 100A ..the B-side is called 'You Can't Fight City Hall Blues".
One of the most utterly stupendous singles in all recorded history. The original single on the Go Go label actually first charted in November 1966. The flip side should have also been a hit. It's Called "You Can't Fight City Hall Blues" and likewise was a superb example of original material inspired by the jug band pioneers of the 1920s and 1930s.
I bought this at a flea market when I was a kid, and robbers broke into my house and stole all my records.. thanks for posting it on here!~ Righteous!~
i have over 3000 records, tapes and cds. i've looked for this record probably 40 years. i even called wls radio station in chicago (it used to be their theme). thanks for sharing. and yes norman greenbaum was with the group. rock on!
Actually, it was minor hit (reached the 'teens, I think) around September-October 1966 in Hartford, where I heard it. I wish someone would put up the flip side, "The You Can't Fight City Hall Blues", which is very nearly as much fun!
My friends and I did a video/live stage sketch combo of this for our high school's "Senior Show" sketch comedy deal. If I had the means to upload it and knew I wouldn't get in trouble, I'd put it online.
I finally found this! For forever, it seemed that it was an illusion - nobody I happened to ask recalled it. I'd listen to my little transitor radio at night in the early to 60's,(when I was supposed to be asleep) in the suburban Boston area. I'd memorize the top twenty artists and songs every Saturday while I was doing my chores, whether weeding, raking leaves, dusting etc.
@thinkspiritually hey, i was in the same place, everytime i sung this song for someone they had no idea it was a song. I was doing it for a co-worker last week telling him i would find it so he would know it is a real song. I am 66 going on 67 yrs. old, when did you learn of this song?
I'm 30 and my mother used to break out the ol' 45's and we would jam to his stuff when I was young. I loved it and hope to pass it on to my own! Thanks for helping to relive the

You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
For he may eat your city soon.
You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
If he's still hungry, the whole country's doomed.
He came from outer space, lookin' for somethin' to eat.
He landed in Chicago. He thought Chicago was a treat.
(It was sweet, it was just like suger)
You'd better watch out for the eggplant that ate Chicago,
For he may eat your city soon (wacka-do, wacka-do, wacka-do)
