I remember watching this race as a kid. Does anyone know where the full race can be seen? I was seven at the time, and up until then I'd only watched BTCC races, and I was blown away by the power and speed of the cars. If anyone knows where this can be watched in its entirety I'd really appreciate it.
...Hines should not have giving so much respect to the C1 drivers and stayed on the clean ideal line. He also showes too much respect for Mass by not defending himself when Mass says he was swerving, which at 0:22 you can clearly see he was not, he was driving on the exact same line as the others.
But if Hines would have stayed on the racing line, the C1 drivers would probably also be mad at Hines for not making room for them.
At 0:27 you can clearly see that the pink car of Hines spins on the dirty part of the track and hit Mass at the left rear. At 1:20 you can clearly hear Mass stating the same. Then at 1:31 he suddenly say: 'I don't know whether he spinned or not.' At 2:11: '...either you started spinning...()...or you wanted to turn to the right.'
Mass then decided it was the latter situation, and advices his fellow driver to just stay where he is. I think Mass is correct there....
We were there but missed crash until saw this fantastic BBC film (they were slagged for missing Jag winning Le Mans a few weeks earlier so went overboard to compensate). Think Mass ott but wotabout Mauro Baldis brilliant avoidance in 61 Sauber!! Still third with Jag No 1 winning, recall Andy Wallace saying not paid to let others pass, when quizzed about his aggressive tactics, heehee)
Gr8 days, proper racing, varied cars with different characteristics, far better than boring F1 processions.
I was standing just to the right of the camera that took these shots, it was suddenly quiet just before the cars came into view, It felt wierd as if somthing big was about to happen.then BANG!
Lucky nobody was hurt and the Steve Hines pink Tigra was actualy repaired in the pits and went on to complete the race.
I was on the outside of clearways, aged 11 at the time. The driving of the Mercedes boys was amazing, especially the second car that took avoiding action. I remember some people screaming in the crowd as they thought the 61 car was going to clear the barrier. One if the hardest impacts I've ever seen. Great BBC delayed coverage from the following week!
I was stood on the outside of Clark curve, just where Mass hit. Have been looking for years for this crash on youtube. Hains came down the straight in to Clearways, smack in the middle of the road, darted to the left then lost it on the marbles on the outside. I know it was accidentle, him hitting Mass, but what Mass was saying, was stay in one place, dont dart about the track. These are top drivers, who can find there way past the ameture C2 drivers, they dont need to dart out of the way.
one minute Mass does'nt know what happens and then he starts his lecture ! Seems to me that Hines is trying to keep out of the way and spins on the marbles. If it had been Mass who spun no doubt he would have called it a racing incident !! Twat.
I was at this race. I was watching from South Bank, so the pit buildings obscured my view of this crash. I didn't realise anything had happened until Mass's Sauber failed to appear.
If only sportscars looked like this now, those Sauber C9's looked great in that black colour scheme, great V8 sound as well. Regarding the accident Mass didn't really need to lay into Hines cos Hines lost it on the dirty part of the track, he didn't go into Mass on purpose.
I was at this race. We were in Paddock bend so missed the Mercedes crashing but I can just remember the noise coming from the massive crowd when it happened! Fascinating stuff between Mass and Hines

I don't care if the guy used to race in F1 or not....if he'd started lecturing me about how to drive like that he would be missing some teeth!
