It totally sucks. WHen I first learned about X Japan, I read about hide's lyrics concerning wings and freedom. I thought I found someone who thinks like I do... Then I find he is already gone... I wonder why Toshi lost his voice? Smoking, or just getting older and screaming too much maybe. It would be nice if he could get it back somehow. There's been vocalists that have suffered terrible problems like vocal paralysis or throat polyps and still come back, so maybe there's a chance.

Replace isn't really the word for it, hide can never be replaced. Sugizo is standing in for him, playing at some of the live shows. For some stuff the use recordings of hide though. I agree though, Sugizo is the only person worthy of playing with X Japan in hide's absence.

in many X fans, sugizo is seen as hide's apprentice. hide brought luna sea (sugizo's band) to prominence and fame way back in 1991 when he discovered them playing in a bar.

X Japan is actually very respected among alternative / metal fans. They're easily one of the best (live as well).
