PERS has to project into the future so the unfunded liablity would be if every State employee worked 30 years and collected a pension, there may be a problem. It's like buying a new house and you put 10 percent down, you can still make the payments easily but your bank account would have to funded to be able to pay the house off in full. Only 10 percent retire, PERS still has to fund as all of them make a 30 year career, that's were the unfunded liability comes from, it's not really there.

Governor, with all due respect, as an Information Technology public employee in local government (in the State of California), we take on wages that are less than industry averages for the security and benefits a government job has to offer. I agree we must reform, but the impact on people who have sacrificed to take the positions we currently hold should not be effected. Thank you.

I too work in IT for a State Agency. If you look at the Sac Bee at sacbee . com / statepay you will see some nationwide statistics of Public and Private. Also in CA, the avg. state employee gets paid $66K per year while the avg. private employee gets 55K per year.

U and I both know that IT takes up huge portions of each agency. Don't you think that if your assertion is true it would show < $11K difference?

Lets not get into benefits because private has nothing close.
