  • So marvellous!

  • da best from schubert <3

  • This is so incredibly good! I loved this performance!

  • Does this piece use a pedal to play??

  • @tangybird depends on the interpretation =)

  • Nodame Cantabile inspired me to pursue music.

  • Heh heh, thumbs up if you came here through okazu!

  • This is by far one of my favorite sonatas by all of the classical era composers combined. And yes, I did discover this piece from Nodame Cantabile.<3

  • Diane Walsh, I hope you see all of the posts acknowledging you for your beautiful performance of my favourite schubert sonata. Fantastich!

  • shite

Rubato for no reason. Bloody awful

  • i listen to this video almost everyday! <3 great music~

  • HAHA. See her expression at the end, she was just like "Ya, I did that, you saw me"

  • omg she makes me fall in love with Schubert

  • nodame cantabile

  • This is marvellous. Authoritative, completely connected and intellectually equal to the demands of keeping the massive structure airborne, although she should repeat the exposition- the scale and intensity of the development absolutely demand it and takes on an extra dimension if it comes after the repeat. have never heard of Diane Walsh, but she is obviously a great artist and I must find out more about her.

  • I never get tired of this piece

  • My sister used to play it at home and indeed I rediscovered it with Nodame... :)

    Schubert Piano Sonata No.16 In A Minor, Opus 42, D.845 - 1. Moderato

  • magnificent interpretation Miss Walsh!!!!!

  • I was in the midst of playing this sonata, but stopped at the hard part (all those repeating sixteenth notes!!) I have to get better!!!

  • @KnitKnots the one that sounds like a trill?

  • @lavamaster530 yes. the repeating (for the most part) sixteenth notes in the right hand. I just couldn't do it.

  • @KnitKnots get into the habit of your right hand doing that then after you get it down, pay attention to your left hand as you play the notes so that way your right hand is passively playing the notes.

  • i first heard this song on Nodame Cantabile....... i love this song

btw the ladies hair looks like its dancing.....^^ funny

  • I've discovered this piece watching nodame cantabile drama.superb!! [2]

  • @AndrewFinch1 There is no correlation between appearance and talent.

What sense does that make? Do you have to look a certain way to even be expected to play well?

    Is that your logic?

I'm sick of people like you.

  • @AndrewFinch1

You are a despicable, insensitive, petty bastard that has no business roaming around this site.

  • too much...troppo...tornare al testo...

  • I cant say that i like this sonata as much as D960 or D958. However the finale of the 1st movement is extraordinary. I feel like It speaks of despair and darkness and tragedy without any hope for salvation. I get chills all over my spine every time i play it.

  • Bella interpretazione, dove secondo me è molto chiara la lezione di Richter -- sia nella scansione del tempo sia nel titpo di suono -- che con la sua straordinaria interpretazione della sonata si fece conoscere in occidente.

  • fantastic rendition..

  • too fast ¬¬

  • she is married.

  • In fact, the player has adopted rubato in many pleces.

  • So, the "Moderato" of this song like this ? Woaw... it's really different with my "Moderato" if I play this piece. She play it to fast, i think ==" but it's still cool.

  • yay listened to this cuz of nodame cantabille i luv that drama soooooo awsumXD <3

  • I have heard Walsh playing this Sonata one hundred times and I must admit that I like her interpretation feelings much better than Haskill, Klien, Richter and even Brendel. She definitely scored a 100% with this recording !

  • Moderato is appropriate at the beginning. It si a little bit faster in the subsequent part.

  • MODERATO!! She is playing so fast.

  • Schubert is one case where I remain happier listening to his genius rather than trying to interpret it for myself. This is a lovely performance.

  • nodame cantabile anime > nodame cantabile drama

    :D

  • Qué profundidad de ejecución, de sonido, de musicalidad , ¿que puedo decir ante la exaltación que me produce esta maravilla? Simplemente, gracias Diane Walsh por este regalo; MARAVILLOSO

  • <<<Joins ranks of people that found this piece watching nodame cantabile

  • @uclrichard I just uploaded the Pollini rendition from 1974, if you are interested:

    watch?v=KNXvpL7K8o4

  • Such a feel for this wonderful composer. Thanks.

  • mmm el tempo lo va haciendo mas rapido y eso no me agrado mucho u_u

  • supercooooool!!

  • Very Good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I really love this song, and I also heard this piece from watching 'nodame cantabile' Sunch a good drama!! :)

  • bravo!

  • I bet you really upset about that ONE wrong note throughout the whole piece basically at 8:18

  • i remember chopin's polonaise in fsharp minor 'tragic"...

  • This is perhaps one of the greatest interpretation of this sonata I've yet heard. The cleanliness is wonderful, and she had great control in making this piece a perfect inbetween of a classical and a romantic piece.

  • Wonderful interpretation. Could anyone tell me where i could find an mp3 of this? I am playing this piece for my ATCL and would very much appreciate being able to listen to it often

  • i' ve discovered this piece watching nodame cantabile drama. superb!!

  • @akkun85

So did I and I almost instantly decided to learn it. Although I can play the whole piece (with some errors) I still need to get a lot better on it, at least that's what I think.

  • @akkun85 Hey, me too! It's such a fantastic work of Schubert's! I'm very glad Nodame has such a wide range of music.

  • @akkun85 Same here, except I am reading the manga!

  • @akkun85 me too x]

  • @akkun85 so have I! Quite good!

  • @akkun85 Guilty...

  • nice....i ll play this piece for my diploma on piano!!! i hope to play it like her...;-)

  • haha. agree with a much earlier comment. i called a piece a song too and got owned too.

  • Thank´s I finally found a good interpretation of this gorgeous sonata, smooth and soft :)

  • The thing with Schubert's music is that if you're good at the piano, then it will come easy. The only thing is the emotion that needs the most work

  • I 'll borrow the account of my dear friend to send you this message. =)

believe me, it isnt that easy to play. When I learned this piece it was quite difficult. some parts are really easy to understand but there are parts where you have to watch out carefully what you do. Intepreting this song is hard aw well, of course are there already many examples but if you cannot imagine what he tries to say with this song you wont be able to play it like this cause it would hardly show any emotion.

  • There's no way that you could assume how I play. I'm not trying to cause some online fight, but I believe that whose ever account this is, you probably just said the wrong thing to support, once again, whoever account this is. I think you should rethink that statement that I just said, and consider what I was getting at. Not just declaring me as a horrible musician, which is what you just did.

  • agree. But all level of difficulty is relatively speaking. If you can play i.e. listz, rachmainoff, chopin etude, debussy etude, then the skills required for this piece is simple. But as a master pieice, still hard to play well. Kempff's interpretation is the best in terms of both skills and emotion while Lupu's is far worse than kempff's. Polini's is moderate between these two.

  • Great!

  • I loved it!

  • Brilliant.

  • PERFECT

  • the touch that she has in her right hand between 3:27 and 4:07, is absolutely incredible. Im learning this piece now, and this phrase is without the most difficult. it is so gosh damn hard, and so beautiful at the same. I really hope to be able to play this section as beautiful as she did... some day. bravo man... bravo.

  • if im not mistaken, i think it have 5!! lol. 5 freaking movements. intense.

  • This is a good performance

  • beautiful

  • no, there is 4 in total...

  • very nice performance...could have slowed down that inverted passage a bit tho...

  • ::standing ovation:: beautiful piano, beautiful piece, beautiful interpretation,.

  • Fantastic performance !! This is one of my most favorite piano Sonata :D

  • Her tempo is slightly faster then what the great Schubert master interpreters use, however through it she layers an unbelievable rubato throughout the entire piece adding an entire new dimension to the sonata. Truly amazing reading and interpretation!

  • She is a greeeat player!!

    ^^

Such a great rythm, is not too fast, and there is something in the way she plays this song that I could say is... magical? Anyway, is a reaaly nice song with a really good player.

  • awesome!

  • I'm playing this too, yust got the sheets, but I must play this in a week :| end that's a hard task

  • i've been playing this piece with the pedal too. her pedal work here is excellent. i'm stealing ideas! thanks for posting!

  • I agree! I've been wondering how to use the pedal for this piece, and I love her interpretation and feeling SO much! I'm stealing ideas too! :)

  • i <3 this song !!!!!!!!!!!! =)

  • its a piece not a song

  • dude relax i wasn't being a snob i was only trying to tell you the correct word

you don't have to get all mean :(

  • hes correct. Calling this a song isnt technically correct in the classical music world, rather its a piece. I was in class once and my teacher asked me what i was going to play, and i said this song by chopin, and she said, so your singing? and i said no im playing a song and she kept on drilling me. Moral of the story is that i got owned for called a piano piece a "song".

  • What? "your singing"? It's "you're singing". Your is the possessive pronoun, you're is the contraction of you and are, you are, thus, you're. "So you are (you're) singing?", your teacher asked. So many people seem to either not know the difference or make a mindless typo and not proofread what they write before posting.

The moral of the story is you need to pay attention to your grammar and syntax.

  • Im sorry great sir, though i do hate to be sarcastic. I type quickly and infact do NOT proof read something as important as a youtube comment.

  • actually you're all wrong. this is rap.

  • Great skills

  • I've heard this song played my numerous pianists but this is by far the first time that I heard it being played so well. It gave be goose-bumps! It's played very lightly which compliments the song and makes an even better effect. This is by far the best performance I've heard of this song.

  • That is by far one of the best performances of this piece. Fantastic job, and thanks for posting it.

  • I don't quite like Schubert's sonatas, spite of being a fan of his music, but you have done it wonderfully, and I look foward for your next sonatas interpretations.

  • my god, that is a sick performance. albert brendels version blows compared to this.

  • great! any chance we get to hear the other 3 movements here too?

  • warmth, precision beauty

  • omg... i'm crying, too beautiful!

  • Wery high culture, extreme perfect of skill. My respect.

  • best version

  • Absolutly wonderful perfomance for a great masterpiece!

  • Does anyone know the brand of this piano?

I love its clear and mellow tones.

    As for the performance,

    Bravo.

  • It's an American Steinway.

  • It's a Hamburg Steinway, from the Steinway basement in New York City.

  • Fantastic. I keep re-playing this video and it sweeps me away each time.

  • It is a rare artist indeed who can play Schubert with so much expressive power while avoiding all excesses and indulgences. The Sonata on this video is available on CD and download. My copy is on the way. I can't wait!

  • hahhaa lol...i was appreciating this until i saw that comment about the "wig" hahahaha

  • How is she going to play if she doesn't use her hands? huh? You obviously don't play the piano.

  • I think it's not an act..

it's a style use in Germany..

by doing so.. it will make the sound more legato..

  • Do you play? You must be a master

  • This is a wonderful performance but I think there's a slip in 8:18.

  • yes its a slip on the octaves, very slight, as is the slight one on 3:58. It only goes to show that this is an unedited real life recordning, takes nothing away.

Schubert is my favourite by miles.

  • Wow, this is absolutely amazing. I've been working on this piece for a little while now, and I must say I come nowhere close to this. Of course I can only play about 2 minutes of it, (we had to shorten it for recital) but I do plan to learn the rest as soon as recital is over.

Brava Diane, I'm sure that Schubert was tapping his foot in his grave when she played this.

  • D.845 is the sonata which became famous for comics in Japan.

Though there was not readily a thing of good quality, the performance has good quality and thanks for the sound quality.

    ありがとうがざいました.

  • Yea I heard this piece from Nodame Cantabile! XD I love this piece Schubert is just a genius!!!

Does anyone know where can I download the music sheet ? x3

  • Google "International Music Score Library Project".

  • Quel phrasé ! quelle musicalité ! et tout cela gâché par une prise de son débile écrasant toute dynamique...

  • Amazing phrasing structure and dynamic control!! wonderful.

  • Thanks for that deep insight.

  • This performance is so sophisticated and the phrases so beautifully sculpted - such civilized and immaculate musicianship, truly representative of the highest class of musicianship and culture! Deepest gratitude for this - an exceptional light in mania of the "louder-faster" genearation.

  • I understand that a CD of Ms. Walsh playing Schubert is now, or will soon be, available. I can't wait! It is rare to hear Schubert playing that is both stylistically satisfying and so expressive. Brava!
