As a bassist: Guys who critizise the use of a pick can eat a bag of dicks. All bass players should know all playing styles, and use one that's fitting to the music played (even if you don't, that's fine. Use the tools that lets you do what you want). Unless you play bass yourself, you're not going to hear the difference. I can get finger thump with a pick, and pick twang with fingers (maybe not the articulation, though).

J.C. uses a pick, for good reason. He sounds awesome!
