  • justin used a pick on the song, I think. Awesome job, both of you

  • The good bass players who use picks could probably destroy most people when it comes to finger plucking.

Think of Wings for Marie pt. 2, Justin finger plucks in that song.

  • i dont use pick but for this song it doesn't sound right when you dont

  • Damn that's a lotta bass pedals :-D nicely done this is badass

  • What are your settings for the GT-2?

  • That's an insane amount of pedals! NICE!

  • Now that's music! But I don't think Chris was playing a couple parts there right? I'm a die hard Tool fan and have watched a lot of videos of this song live and I don't think Chris was doing the verse right?

  • I'm a finger-style bassist, but TOOL sounds better with a pick hands down. End of story.

  • @bullsnake70 I m an all style bass player thumbs up. End of story.

  • Dam, you crackers are very good!!

  • hey man im not tryin to sound like total noob or anything but ur whammy pedal looks different from most....it may be that my resolution is shitty but it jus looks different....would u mind explainin?

  • "][" {[]} {[]} [{_

  • geez how tall is tht dude

  • What effects do you use during the Whammy Part?

  • That was amazing. I love you, Mr. Bass Man.

  • Great cover. You should do one of the pot.

  • awesome

  • we can see that your are fans, you have the same guitar and bass as Adam Jones and Justin Chancelor ^^

  • @DrWatson51 Yeah, may be a Les Paul Silverburst, but Adam Jones' year model... there are only 5 working left in the known music world. Adam has 4 of them. Go figure >.<

  • Sick cover man! loving the bass pedal setup and sound :)

  • lol,the guitarist uses 2 pedals and bass like 10!

  • As a bassist: Guys who critizise the use of a pick can eat a bag of dicks. All bass players should know all playing styles, and use one that's fitting to the music played (even if you don't, that's fine. Use the tools that lets you do what you want). Unless you play bass yourself, you're not going to hear the difference. I can get finger thump with a pick, and pick twang with fingers (maybe not the articulation, though).

J.C. uses a pick, for good reason. He sounds awesome!

    Great vid, btw.

  • Very cool :)

  • Dude, pick or no pick, that sounded amazing! If you don't mind me asking, what equipment do you need (besides the bass...) in order to play this song? You have so many pedals, which one's would be essential for Schism?

Thanks again for the vid, you two sounded great!!

    -Dnicholas.

  • This song makes me wanna start playing bass...then make a cover of me playing it on guitar (i already know how) and bass.

  • you guys are so awesome. how could there be 12 dislikes?

  • Generaly I dont like the bass with pick...

But, this sounds rly awesome :D!!!

Thumb up for u, guys :B (Bad english, sorry)

  • Dude these are fucking amazing covers bro. I love sing along too them. I would love to have the set up you have too, it blows me away. I would have so much fun just fucking around. Did you buy most of the petals you use for your bass because you wanted to do tool covers? Or did you just want them and you found you could get sounds that justin can? I was just curious?

  • Is that Epiphone-silverburst and if so, did you make any changes to it? I have one myself, bud I don't seem to find an amplifier that would give me the sound I want. I see you use a Messa. Does it work for you?

  • Very sweet cover guys, you have some righteous gear, esp the Wal Bass! Need a drummer tho

  • great bass man...just great

  • Good job guys! Don't particularly care (and neither should you) about any negative comments. Fuck 'em! Sounded really good, 99% accurate and you guys know as well as I do, Justin ALWAYS uses a pick! A+

  • omg so many retarded comments just listen to them two they are fucking awsome !

  • HAHA!!!!! Dude I'm a drummer and probably one of the biggest Danny Carey/TOOL fan, and I was drumming straight through that with yall. Kudos, guys.

  • damn buy a pedal board! haha that must have been a pain to set all those wires up. good cover too.

  • everyone who says ur not meant to use a pick has NO idea what they're talking about... chancellor (THE BASSIST) uses a pick in this and it's even written in the sheet music...

  • Good work boys .I know it´s not easy to play.

  • got enough pedals?

  • Dude! NICE COVER!!!!! If you have the time. Could you give instruchion vid on how to play the solos please??? Also??? What Pedald do you use???

  • damn you're tall -_-

  • COOL!

  • Godly. And those kids saying it would sound better without a pick can GTFO, Chancellor plays with a pick Sherlocks.

  • cool guys that was awesome

  • Thats so siik

  • good job. my band is doing ticks and leeches, along with schism. i gotta give it you guys.

  • great cover, I think in the beginning the guitar could've used a bit more palm muting so it sounds snappier. it still sounds great, I love playing this song on bass

  • Don't listen to the nay-sayers... Tool kicks ass, and you sound like Tool!!! So hell yeah, go buy their guitar, pedals and amps... I bought Tiger's golf clubs the other day... and now I... no I don't!!!

  • pretty kick ass

  • Damn, that was pretty much perfect... I would love to jam the drums for you guys!

  • very nice!! im bassist and im searching a guitarrist to do the same. see you guys

  • you guys must be the biggest tool fans ever. the silverburst les paul say sit all.

  • AWESOME JOB

  • got enough pedal thier buddy? lol

  • Just as many as he needs for the solo.

  • holy shit! the bassist has a LOT of pedals!!!

  • Actually he has the more closest thing I've ever seen to Justin's board.

  • Is there guitar at the beggining?

  • The way the bass and guitar sound ,starting at 5:32 , is the beautiful part of the song. Just absolutely amazing you guys. Fantastic. :D

  • what effects are you using for bass starting at 5:00

  • He's using distortion and an octaver.

  • yall two need to do their new live version they did this tour. if yall and tbartels could do that it would be fuckin amazing.

  • God, why do so many people on YouTube who probably aren't even musicians themselves get their panties in a wad about a bassist using a pick? Use one or don't, it's the call of the musician. I'll play it with my ass if I want to. No one is impressed with your super musical knowledge that tells you OMG playing with fingers is more common.

Just like a kid who's been playing guitar for a month going around trying to have conversations about what pick size to use. It's not that important. Just play.

  • Or you could pull a Murderface an play with your dick. Nobody's calling that guy out.

  • @minusjason Tbh i dont think fingers is more common nowadays, but i have no problems with picks as i sometimes use them

  • @dopewithabass it really depends on which genre you listen to, if you listen metal and other sub genres they usually use a pick for the accented sound, jazz blues they use their fingers, every bassist needs to know when to use a pick, fingers, thumb, pop and slap, but all really depends on the tone you want

  • i just subscribed, you guys sound great.

  • Im pretty sure that Justin Chancellor uses a pick so all these "dont use a pick" comments should stop at once.

    awesome job btw

  • yea, he uses 1mm picks

  • that is a truely sick setup. almost identical to Toolmybass's setup. nice playing, awesome gear.(:

  • its a little slow in a few parts....ill sing for yas

  • freaking sweet!

  • Damn that are a lot of foot pedals ;)

  • excellent !!!!!

  • Then use a softer pick because its way to slap happy

  • Damn guys, that was really good. You don't see too many duos in this place, but you both nailed it sweet! Nice job, guys.

  • I prefer the attack the pick give. Plus the sound is much cleaner. Plus playing with a pick is a blast!

  • yea but its still fun to play all styles

  • I know! but just because he uses one you don't have to do that! I also play bass and I play it with finger and i thnink it sounds better!

  • good cover! but I think it sound better without a pick (bass)!

  • tell that to the bass player from tool...he uses a pick.

  • @TOOLbassplayer

I dont play guitar.. and everyone is talking about pick.. what is that?

  • @quaestuosus somehting you use to strum with

  • @TOOLbassplayer really I can play it with the fingers not excellent but I can

  • still the " play without a pick comments" must get tired of wasting time responding to these.

  • @coollaadose Are you serious? Some of the best bands have bass players who use picks. Slayer, Nirvana, SOAD, Tool, Alice in Chains, Lamb of God. This dude is bad ass and so is bass w/ pick

  • @coollaadose you guys are amazing, u make comments and u dont even now what u are saying.

this guy is the best coverer (if that word exists) from youtube, he perfectly play that songs with the right tune, which is almost impossible, u should give congratulations to this guy ;D

  • ur not supposed to use a pick for the bass in this song...

  • You just made yourself look like an idiot. The bass player from Tool plays the song with a pick. He plays every song with a pick! Go watch a video of Tool live and see with your own eyes. Better yet type in "Justin Chancellor Schism" in youtube search and watch him play it sitting on a couch right in front of your face....uhhhh with a pick!

  • owned

  • hahahahaha...

    well said bro.

  • @TOOLbassplayer The video is even in the suggest video box

  • dumbass

  • he uses a pick. BASS USES FINGERS FOR BLUES ONLY!

  • And Jazz. :D

  • their is many bass players who use fingers for rock music....very few use pick. using fingers is alot quicker and can be used for different sounds that a bassist with a pick could not do....neither is incorrect

  • @wowspare fuckin retard Justin ALWAYS uses a pick!

  • nice cover, but damn you've got a lot of pedals!

  • Awesome! You guys rock

  • Cool

    am from Thailand

I like it and i love TooL

  • I never used to play with a pick before joining this tool tribute band Im in now. It's...necessary for this stuff.

I dont understand what you're doing at around the 4 minute mark though... are you guys playing a live version of the song?

  • Read the first two seconds of the video.....lol

  • @TOOLbassplayer I love the sound effect you use at 5:01

  • great job guys.. The peadls really make me realize what i don't have in life...

  • I think your shit is hella tight but honestly I think your a tad off on the main riff. The main hammer-on is way more pronounced. Watch the video of chancellor doing it, its like the only vid of him on the tube.

  • that's not it bro. It is because my 12" speakers don't give the quick snap sound of the last note. Watch my video called "schism on bass" in the right hand panel (86,000 views one) and that's when I had my ampeg cab with 10's. I am snapping the shit out of the main riff...check it out.

  • lol i like how the bassists pedal board is like 12 times bigger then the guitarists xD nice job man

  • That was the best cover I've seen on youtube, for probably about any song. I especially like how the guitar picked up the slack when the bassist messed up a bit around 4:30

  • Thanks! :-) Although I did not mess up at 4:30. I only had one wrong note at exactly 5:21 and you can't even tell unless you are really paying attention and know the part very well.

  • great job but you might want to tell the guitar player to consider getting a boss ns-2 noise supressor to make his sound not so noisy with all the hiss and it will also tighten up his overall tone

  • y so manny peddels for bass??

  • because its tool, and they are all required for the various sound effects, maybe not on this song, but lets say the solo in vicarious its two or three pedals at once, and then there's stuff always on that doesn't get touched just there to help with the tone, check out a tour of his pedal board its all explained there

  • a awesome cover and all but one thing.... make some sort of connection between each other look at each when playing or have a laugh at least lol

  • had you watched blooper video? they know how to have fun but they take their covers seriously, if they need to concentrate hard to play these tunes I don't see anything wrong with it, cept for the missing drummer hahaha but there isn't any space to put a drum kit in this here apartment

  • Apartment? House. LOL. :-) Thanks for the defense though

  • ah thowzand epologeez mah frayend

  • awsome job guys!

  • is that an epiphone les paul standard limited edition?

  • it's a silverburst

  • Trade in a few pedals for a drummer and lead singer, and you're set for the stage. Nice effects with the guitarist there for the first few minutes.

  • Awesome, I put my laptop next to my kit and jammed out to this. Thanks.

  • HAHA guitarist had 3 pedals and the bass had 12 or more

  • That's Tool :D

  • haha, i remember when i used to have tons of pedals. i ended up downsizing to 10 because i found alot of the modulation pedals ended up sounding similar the way i had set them. either way, impressive board. loads of dirt i see :P

  • You guys are fucking beasts and you have a SHITLOAD of pedals hahaha.

  • great job!

  • Authentic...veeery authentic.

5* for almost Perfection...and for the money you spent on equipment....

One of the few covers that actually sounds great without the original song in the background.

  • i dont think you got enough pedals dude.. ha

  • jesus look at all those pedals...they hafta do it right with that much equip. lmao

  • I saw them twice on the Lateralus Tour and I'm almost certain during the grudge maybe just the verse Justin isn't picking. As far as everything else your correct. saw em on the 10,000 Days 2007 Tour. Justin sounds so much better on bass than Paul. Adam and Justin are just fucking amazing creating music.

  • I wanna say I've seen Justin play without a pick before, I think The Grudge he does with his fingers.

  • ummmm...not a chance bud. All songs with a pick. First half of 10000 days is part fingers the end is pick. Grudge is most def pick. I have seen them live 10 times....been 4th row 2x.

  • Bass player with lots of pedals man, whatever gets it done tho, Metropolis pays for all my bands stuff such as software, just switched to Apple Logic. from Pro Tools which killed me trying to learn when i formed my band back in 2000-2001. Spiral Our.

  • Good. try ditchin the pick a little, i know this song is very staccato, but i havent seen many videos of you without one. I do like the Mesa head and if thats a gibson epiphone esp or whatever type, i like the coloring

  • Bro...the problem is the song is played with a pick. ALL Tool songs the bassist uses a pick so if you want it to sound spot on ...the pick is a must. If you want to watch a video of me playing with no pick go watch my latest Opeth bass video...no pick.

  • Spiting hairs. When it comes down to it, it mostly depends on your bass, your strings, and if you've built up callouses. If your fingers are like pieces of dough, I'll admit that you need to play a tool song with a pick to get that "authentic" sound.

Great cover. I know I'll get bashed to shit for saying, but I'm not a huge tool fan. But, without, I can say that they have one of the best bassists I've heard in a while. Inventive use of the instrument.

And yeah, you have a fuckload of pedals.

  • fucking great! really good cover

  • lol wheres the electric razor before the whammy at?

  • wat was that effect on the guitar used at 2:28

  • delay? on the album recording its also an artificial harmonic

  • Have you ever thought of forming a band? If not, you should really consider it, because you have great talent. Either that or wait for a record company to notice you on youtube and offer you a record deal. The chances of that happening.. Slim.

  • Yeah, He's gonna have to write his own songs which he may have, but seeing as this is a cover, before he gets any record deals ..lol

  • wow, you have so many pedals Lance Armstrong would be jealous!

  • Did you change the tubes out in your B52? I hear if you get those chinese and russian tubes out of there and get some electro harmonics or whatever else in there, it'll go from a really good amp to a fucking outstanding amp...

  • badassssss, wheres the drums at, shit be killer

    nice job

  • both of you are awesome!

  • this song is awesome, i just learned to play it! Great cover! (especially remembering all without a backing track ;p)

  • Beutiful u guys rock

  • nice vid.. have u ever thought of getting one big petal?

  • Our band did Schism but it didnt sound like this. Keep on rockn u guys \,,\ (-.-) /,,/

  • ha ha sorry did not see the first credits at the beginning.. It is the extended version

  • not bad not bad at all

  • lol wow you have a shitload of pedals

  • dude bass player has massiv rig holy shit

  • great cover!!

  • dude get a drummer and cover full thing will be aweseome

  • you guys are great!

    5 stars!

  • great but wtf was that little guitar shred thing? its great on the bass part but the guitar was pretty stupid shredding we are not playing the begining of prison sex

  • dude the guitar shred thing you so called it is a Pick scratch.. You alternately grab you pick and scrap it on a designated string to get some crunchy lines...

I do believe this is a live version if i'm not mistaken...

Great cover by the way Chris and Brad!!! Keep up the good fucking work!!!

  • this is so amazing.

    great job guys.

  • DANG! very nice, btw, what guitar amp halfstack is that? ( i know its a b-52 but i want to know what series)

... (sarcastically) i dont think the bassist has enough pedals lol

  • of course he doesn't ;)

  • AWESOME WORK GUYS....love it

  • very nice, watched it over and over

  • wawa we wah very nice

  • The part at 4:34 is played on bass not guitar. Using a whammy pedal, with distortion, octave pedals too, and also using the volume knob at the same time. Seriously hard!

  • He starts to do it at around 5:05, I think he messed up and the guitarist helped him out by covering it for him till he got it fixed.

  • no.... its not "Seriously hard!"

  • 5:07, holy shit what effect pedal is that?

  • delay whammy and distortion all on bass

    its a sexy setting

    just tried it today

  • you have a bass whammy?

  • RE:gageinoc

I am a guitar player and a bassist, and trust me...from my experience..its near impossible to play Schism, (or any other Tool song from Aenima to now) without having a variety of effect pedals

so why don't you go study up.

or watch his video on his efx board

it will give you an insight on things

    (posting link to efxboard video)

  • this is awesome.

i play bass and i hate playing it low like he is...it shows his talent though

    good work

  • how does it show his talent? not to say he's not good, he plays this pretty well indeed, but playing low does not show that your good. it shows that you prefer to play with your bass hanging low...
