@Usdownz Yes, for some reason Academy is very expensive in Sweden.. :( Och jag begriper inte varfor... kanske det ar dalig vaxelkurs mellan de svenska och koreanska valutorna? :P
@FeelinGipper Most Tamiya kits are very good and fun builds.. haven't come across one yet that caused me any major problems, or that I haven't enjoyed building.. :) The Tamiya 1/72 P-51 D is on my list to get at some point, I have already built the 1/48 scale Tamiya version.. :)..
@BasicModelling Yeah I just broke into the P-51D model today and it is going together nicely. I looked at your 1/48 P-51 video, all i can say is it looks gorgeous. I also just finished a 1/72 Tamiya P-47D which was a really fun kit to build. I cant wait to see more of your great scale models!!! :)
@FeelinGipper I haven't built a Tamiya P-47 yet, in any scale... The P-47 is my favourite US WWII fighter, and I have built / will build quite a few, so have to stick to cheap and cheerful kits like Academy and Revell in 1/72.. They're still ok, especially the Revell kit, which is one of my favourite kits to build! :)
@BasicModelling Yes, Academy kits are still quite nice for how inexpensive they are but im worried about the quality of their decals. Im considering buying the Academy 1/72 P-40E Warhawk after im done with the P-51D. The Tamiya P-47D was an awesome build. Everything fit well and the decals were very easy to work with. I mainly stick to Tamiya models and paints but I did recently build a 1/48 Revell F-14D which turned out really nice.
@BasicModelling Ya I don't really mind it, because I was young (in the modelling hobby. I was only 6 months younger when I built it.) so I don't really pay much attention to my old models. Nicely done like the B decals the cockpit looked very detailed you have made me want to get one I am quite annoyed now because I saw a C academy version but I got the academy hurricane instead :I
@thehjupo Well, get the C version next time.. There's no difference between the Academy C and B kits, by the way, it's basically the same type of Mustang, just manufactured in different places.. but you probably know that! I'm working on another Academy 'D' Mustang as a side project at the moment.. :)
Buildin' the D variant, as a 3 Sqn RAAF post war subject! (I hope to be in 3 Sqn one day :) Frontline FIGHTERS!!) But I mainly picked it up for them swastika kill marks, I need some kill marks to go with my japanese ones...
Looks great! I too have problems with Academy Decals... have you any tips on how to put them on and make them stay? I've got a great kit of an Academy F-86 Sabre which has awful decals, and I don't wan't them ruining the lovely model... :)
Also, when you 'wash' the model and the cockpit, what exactly is that and how do you do it? Thanks and love all the vids!! :)
@applecrumble2508 I have found that Johnsons Klear Floor Polish works well with Academy decals.. it is also known as 'Future', but I think they have now rebranded the name and call it 'Pledge'.. The key to a good result with any decals is to apply them to a gloss surface, especially so when it comes to the Academy decals of old.. that prevents silvering! Academy has improved their decals a lot in their later kits, but sadly there's still plenty of the bad decals on the market.. CONTINUED
When I 'wqash' the model I add a thin wash, i.e a solution that seeps into the panel lines and aaround shapes and lines to make them stand out and look a bit dirty.. I have found the the washes you can buy from the Warhammer range, i.e the Citadel washes from Games Workshop works quite well for me, but there's plenty of other stuff on the market, if you don't want to mix your own.. :)
At my local Air muesuem they have a P-51 Mustang flew by a local from where I was born and live. His name was Chesly Peterson. He also flown a Spitfire in Eagle Squadron, which I wish they had his spitfire in our muesum
I saw a P-51 Fly over my head today at the park. He was high enough for me to see the invasion stripes and the air force symbol. Glad I am able to see some WWII history still in flight.
@bzzymatt The Mustang is quite a common warbird these days.. but it's always a treat to see, and HEAR one, fly over.. it's not my favourite WWII fighter, that honour goes to the P-47 Thunderbolt and the Hawker Hurricane, but it is still a beautiful plane.. :)
Oh, Rob, you the great, don't give up, and you should keep on to fly up to the sky, and no moe do your flaps down !!! :))))))) Well, now my local time is mid-night at 1:04, good night, see you ! :)
i felt happy to see, appreciated that you chose one of the planes to have flaps DOWN shown ,rather than the normal situation of no flap could be installed shown at 3:42 ! So good job, Rob ! A full and detailed video, i give you 9.9 out of 10, haha !
@logantheace Excess plastic that has leaked around the parts, like a thin film.. Harmless but annoying and needs to be removed or the parts won't fit.. :)
How do you get your 'natural metal' finish looking so even? That's one of the reason I gave up aircraft modelling, I just couldn't get a nice even metal finish.
@bruce3371 Imuse a flat brush, approx. 10mm wide.. and Humbrol 11 silver, with at least 2 if not 3 thin coats.. :) :) If you airbrush I recommend 'Alclad'.. :)
@leokimvideo Thank yopu.. The decals caused me too much bother and I couldn't quite cover up where the decals split or broke.. but they're ok, and good enough for me.. :)
@leokimvideo Thank you.. I quite often make a double build, the intention is to save time and effort, by using the same paints and brushes painting two at the same time, instead of just the one.. even though in this case the planes were so different, no real time or effort saving was made.. :)
@outoftheboxmodels The cockpit of the P-51 B is interior gree (Humbrol 78, I think) and a wood effect floor.. and for the 'D' I used interior green throughout.. :) The insignia on one wing doesn't bother me, but I agree that it looks better if they're on both wings.. :)
@grummeper Yes, they are small.. if I had a nice big house I'd build nice big models.. but as I live in a shoebox, I have to build nice small models instead.. :)
Yeah I know my plane is not a Mustang. But this looked like a good place to park it. I need to go out to the airplane museum here in Riverside California. You will love that place. Video soon on that adventure.
@supergodzillaman2 There are a few about. still.. I'm glad they finally are getting the recognition they rightfully should have had already during the war.. :)
@GerbilEssences Well, obviously you know the answer.. as you give the alternatives.. but to satisfy anyone who does not know, I believe the B was made at Inglewood.. :)
I love 'em! Well done there. Took me weeks to do the Skalski P-51B but I'm sure you managed yours in a few days, thats dedication :)
Had no idea there were dropped flaps as a kit option :O Like the clips and the music, Indeed there is no shortage of good mustang footage on the You Tube.
@GerbilEssences Yes, unlike the Spitfire.. which surprisingly enough there's very little usable footage of, on the 'tube'! I missed a superb Mustang display at last years Clacton Air Show, or I would have had plenty footage of my own.. Luckily wildstar1 and joluqa both have a great variety of aircraft videos that I can use at will.. which is good! Dropped flaps are the easiest option on that kit, easier than trying to not have them dropped.. :)
@GerbilEssences Your cousin Feodora? It's only a stonesthorw from here.. and I will miss it yet again!! But once my son (finally) will get his car and be able to drive us there, I will go.. Shame you can't venture just a bit further down the road, but even if you could I would not be home.. Have our 25th Wedding Anniversary in the week, and will celebrate it at the weekend! Now, just make sure to take plenty of moving pictures.. think of me and my modelling videos!! Ha ha ha ha..
Well done work! Now for a TRIPLE built! Let´s say A6M2/A6M5/A6M2-N seaplane XDDDD Forget it! Just kidding! X) Though I´m "a bit" bored with the Mustang, I have to admit that it was one of the most coloreful WWII warbirds, and it would be curious to see a whole bookshelf with differently-painted P-51s (that for Mustang-fans, not for me).
@AlanMartinNala Thank you.. I'm not a Mustang fan either, but I hope to make a nice display of colourful Thunderbolts instead, having built a few already.. :) The reason I build these Mustangs was to add to my collectiuon of USAAF fighters used in the ETO.. I have started a P-38 Lightning as well, but that is a side project at the moment.. it will be my main modelbuild, once the Buccaneer is done.. :) Modelling is slow, it's too hot and I'm tired from work, as its hectic right now! :)
@fehquig I'm running out of good music.. even the Russian songs are getting tricky now, as I have so many Russian speaking subs, who will tell me off if I chose the wrong music.. i.e a Navy song when I show a tank.. :) So I can't get away with that anymore.. if I ever did.. :)
Pardon the expression, but that's a lovely pair you have there!
I believe there's a P-51 to be flying at this years Leauchars Airshow as well as a Spit and and Seafire (don't quote me on that!) and XH558 is suppose to be taking to the air too so am mucho looking forwardo to that, er, oh.
@BradThunder Just BRING the camera.. :) I'm glad I have the Mustangs done, now all I need is a P-38 Lightning (just now fresh from the stash in the wardrobe) and a P-61.. and I will have a near enough complete collection of USAAF WWII Fighter types, as used in the ETO.. that is my goal!! :) Glad you liked my effort.. :)
Both builds are awesome bro, love the details & how you put them together, you make it look easy! How many planes do you have in your collection now? The mustangs are some bad ass planes & I know going for a ride in one would be very thrilling!! Once again awesome work & keep on building, peace!!
@cwazmann1 I have given up counting.. Had I kept all my early builds I would be up in over 200 by now, I'm sure.. :) The Mustang is an impressive fighter, but I'm still more of a P-47 fan.. :)
Those came out very nice. I really enjoyed the side-by-side build. It is interesting to see the difference in the kits. I would like to see more of that. Perhaps comparing different kit manufacturer's take on the same subject.
@SueBobChicVid In my first Mustang video I did exactly that, comparing the Academy P-51 B with the Revell P-51 B.. The Academy kit is better.. :) I will try and do similar comparisons when I have two different kits of the same type plane.. :)
@MisplacedTexan4 Yes, I enjoy the sound of a good Merlin, be it in a Spit or in the Mustang.. but the Mustang has an added plus, in the whistling sound the gunbarrels make.. You don't get that the same with a Spit! :)
@billyCtv Yes, it was a good machine.. and still is! But nobody can deny that the best US WWII Ace in Europe flew the P-47.. and so did another 5 of the top 10.. and the highest scoring US WWII Ace of all flew the P-38.. but yes, I like the P-51 and each time I build one, I like them even more.. :)
@FinlayO No problem, I wanted to, and had planned to, build a couple of P-51's, just not right now.. but now they're done I'm pleased I did them! However, normal building scedule will now return, and tonight I'm starting the 1/72 Airfix Buccaneer.. :)
iv just realised how cool it is how you and youyour son do these. i wish my dad did it lol. oh yea and i love the markings on the p51 for how many planes its shot down :P
@XxGOfastaStripexX Yes, he was a good pilot and a good shot with quite a high score.. :) It's an ageless hobby, modelling.. anyone can do it! As long as they have the interest, of'course.. :)
@Blargaldalien Thank you.. and no, not yet.. the next US bomber (which I started a long time ago) will be a Marauder, as flown from Boxted.. where else?? But that project is currently on hold, as I want to do some other things inbetween.. In due course I will build a Liberator though, even if that particular plane was used in the pacific, I believe.. :)
@GSatiFan I filmed the P-51 at the museum back in May, when the club visited the RAF Museum Model Show in Hendon.. the 'real' one was sampled from one of wildstar1's videos.. with permission, of'course.. :) Looking forward to seeing the A340 done.. :)
@fmcVlad No, the stripes are the original kit decals.. a bit of a pain to do, but I managed in the end! Luckily I had THREE sets of the same decals, and I needed to use most of them in the end.. :P A bit of matt varnish and some Tamiya 'mud' dulled them down quite a bit.. ;) I'm glad I made the effort as I have always wanted a model of a plane in full Invasion paint.. :)
You sertanly do a lot of models and you are an active account mening you post lots of videos :) I have held that kit in my hands for some time in a hobby store the D that is :) The B... well not that fond of it really! Quite dislike the canopy of the actual plane! :) I can say you have done a cracking job at what i believe is a real pain in the ..... -the invasion stripes as decals :) Aufuly long letter this time-out of charac
@tenka45623 I do my best to entertain.. The reason I built the B version with the Malcolm Hood is that I will build a C version with ordinary greenhouse canopy later.. and I didn't have a 'D' in US markings, so made one of those as well, while I was at it! Not sure which version I like the most.. but at least I now have a couple of 1/72 US P-51's in my collection, finally.. :) Glad you liked them, anyway.. :)
@dangerousprimate The Old Crow comes in many guises.. You can make a 'D' version as well in natural metal.. but I have always wanted a model of a plane with full D-Day stripes, and now I've finally got one! There's a couple of Mustangs flying in the 'Old Crow' replica paint scheme these days, I saw one at the Clacton Air Show a couple of years ago.. :) But now on to the Airfix 1/72 Buccaneer.. :)
@888HamilkarBarkas888 The later Academy kits have had decals made by Techmod and other decal manufacturers, and they have been excellent.. it's just these kits that still have the old type of decals.. Luckily I had 3 decal sheets I could use for the P-51 B, and I needed nearly all.. :)
@joluqa Thank you.. I hope to get a nice collection of all the USAAF Fighters used in the ETO during WWII.. so far I have done a few P-47's, and these two Mustangs! Will build a P-38 soon, and a P-61.. that should be just about it!! :)
@wolt96 It's only football.. we don't hate the Germans, and besides, it was the referees fault.. England played well, and so did Germany.. but the Ref lost the plot completely.. Anyway, this is a modelling channel, and a friendly channel to that, please refrain from abusive comments.. :) Thank you..
Nicely done..Kudos to you for exhibiting a "flaps down" display on the "D" model. I quite agree with you also with regard to the decal quality.

X) Though I´m "a bit" bored with the Mustang, I have to admit that it was one of the most coloreful WWII warbirds, and it would be curious to see a whole bookshelf with differently-painted P-51s (that for Mustang-fans, not for me).
AlanMartinNala 1 year ago
@AlanMartinNala Thank you.. I'm not a Mustang fan either, but I hope to make a nice display of colourful Thunderbolts instead, having built a few already.. :) The reason I build these Mustangs was to add to my collectiuon of USAAF fighters used in the ETO.. I have started a P-38 Lightning as well, but that is a side project at the moment.. it will be my main modelbuild, once the Buccaneer is done.. :) Modelling is slow, it's too hot and I'm tired from work, as its hectic right now! :)

An amazing effort Robert with great results. Very well made!
ToppervisionEnt 1 year ago
@ToppervisionEnt Thank you.. I wish I had used after market decals though, the kit decals rather spoilt the fun of the build at one point.. :)

great model, natural metal color is good! :)
joelalcantar69 1 year ago
@joelalcantar69 It's definetely easier to weather and to make the panel lines show on a natural metal model.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Impressive results, Rob, but the music lacks that vintage feel :)
fehquig 1 year ago
@fehquig I'm running out of good music.. even the Russian songs are getting tricky now, as I have so many Russian speaking subs, who will tell me off if I chose the wrong music.. i.e a Navy song when I show a tank.. :) So I can't get away with that anymore.. if I ever did.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
great model, p51s are one of my favorites!
darklord401 1 year ago
@darklord401 I'm more of a P-47 fan.. but no model collecton is complete without some P-51 Mustangs in US markings.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Pardon the expression, but that's a lovely pair you have there!
I believe there's a P-51 to be flying at this years Leauchars Airshow as well as a Spit and and Seafire (don't quote me on that!) and XH558 is suppose to be taking to the air too so am mucho looking forwardo to that, er, oh.
BradThunder 1 year ago
@BradThunder Just BRING the camera.. :) I'm glad I have the Mustangs done, now all I need is a P-38 Lightning (just now fresh from the stash in the wardrobe) and a P-61.. and I will have a near enough complete collection of USAAF WWII Fighter types, as used in the ETO.. that is my goal!! :) Glad you liked my effort.. :)

Good work you do a very good job,Cheers.

@Zjwaamseliedjes Two, even.. :) :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Both builds are awesome bro, love the details & how you put them together, you make it look easy! How many planes do you have in your collection now? The mustangs are some bad ass planes & I know going for a ride in one would be very thrilling!! Once again awesome work & keep on building, peace!!
cwazmann1 1 year ago
@cwazmann1 I have given up counting.. Had I kept all my early builds I would be up in over 200 by now, I'm sure.. :) The Mustang is an impressive fighter, but I'm still more of a P-47 fan.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Those came out very nice. I really enjoyed the side-by-side build. It is interesting to see the difference in the kits. I would like to see more of that. Perhaps comparing different kit manufacturer's take on the same subject.
SueBobChicVid 1 year ago
@SueBobChicVid In my first Mustang video I did exactly that, comparing the Academy P-51 B with the Revell P-51 B.. The Academy kit is better.. :) I will try and do similar comparisons when I have two different kits of the same type plane.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Again very nice model and you have got to love the sound of the P-51s engine.
MisplacedTexan4 1 year ago
@MisplacedTexan4 Yes, I enjoy the sound of a good Merlin, be it in a Spit or in the Mustang.. but the Mustang has an added plus, in the whistling sound the gunbarrels make.. You don't get that the same with a Spit! :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@billyCtv Yes, it was a good machine.. and still is! But nobody can deny that the best US WWII Ace in Europe flew the P-47.. and so did another 5 of the top 10.. and the highest scoring US WWII Ace of all flew the P-38.. but yes, I like the P-51 and each time I build one, I like them even more.. :)

These look amazing!
thanks so much for answering my request!
thanks again

@FinlayO No problem, I wanted to, and had planned to, build a couple of P-51's, just not right now.. but now they're done I'm pleased I did them! However, normal building scedule will now return, and tonight I'm starting the 1/72 Airfix Buccaneer.. :)

XxGOfastaStripexX 1 year ago
@XxGOfastaStripexX Yes, he was a good pilot and a good shot with quite a high score.. :) It's an ageless hobby, modelling.. anyone can do it! As long as they have the interest, of'course.. :)

Nice build video. Do you have a B-24 or -17 for them to work with??
Blargaldalien 1 year ago
@Blargaldalien Thank you.. and no, not yet.. the next US bomber (which I started a long time ago) will be a Marauder, as flown from Boxted.. where else?? But that project is currently on hold, as I want to do some other things inbetween.. In due course I will build a Liberator though, even if that particular plane was used in the pacific, I believe.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling 8th AF had Liberator units. My dad was in the 15th in Italy, on a Lib.

Oh what a gr8 vid! i enjoyed it really. i liked the comination of the p-51 museum piece and the 'real' one. :-)
I will go to paint my A340 now.
GSatiFan 1 year ago
@GSatiFan I filmed the P-51 at the museum back in May, when the club visited the RAF Museum Model Show in Hendon.. the 'real' one was sampled from one of wildstar1's videos.. with permission, of'course.. :) Looking forward to seeing the A340 done.. :)

@BasicModelling
Thanks for the tip!
I have to visit this Museum when I'll go to england!
Oh, I was not planing to make a Vid about the A340. But if you want to see it, I could make a Video for you. ;-)
GSatiFan 1 year ago
Rob, an amazing performance:) Excellent done invasion stripes. You used a mask?
fmcVlad 1 year ago
@fmcVlad No, the stripes are the original kit decals.. a bit of a pain to do, but I managed in the end! Luckily I had THREE sets of the same decals, and I needed to use most of them in the end.. :P A bit of matt varnish and some Tamiya 'mud' dulled them down quite a bit.. ;) I'm glad I made the effort as I have always wanted a model of a plane in full Invasion paint.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
All is well with thees models!!!
:) Great job weathering!
-the invasion stripes as decals :) Aufuly long letter this time-out of charac
tenka45623 1 year ago
@tenka45623 I do my best to entertain.. The reason I built the B version with the Malcolm Hood is that I will build a C version with ordinary greenhouse canopy later.. and I didn't have a 'D' in US markings, so made one of those as well, while I was at it! Not sure which version I like the most.. but at least I now have a couple of 1/72 US P-51's in my collection, finally.. :) Glad you liked them, anyway.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
lovely builds bud..ive never seen the "old crow" before!
dangerousprimate 1 year ago
@dangerousprimate The Old Crow comes in many guises.. You can make a 'D' version as well in natural metal.. but I have always wanted a model of a plane with full D-Day stripes, and now I've finally got one! There's a couple of Mustangs flying in the 'Old Crow' replica paint scheme these days, I saw one at the Clacton Air Show a couple of years ago.. :) But now on to the Airfix 1/72 Buccaneer.. :)

888HamilkarBarkas888 1 year ago
@888HamilkarBarkas888 Thank you.. I enjoyed building them, even if the decals left a lot to be desired.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling well this is quite normal for academy kits. the only good decals from academy i had were the merkava decals.
888HamilkarBarkas888 1 year ago
@888HamilkarBarkas888 The later Academy kits have had decals made by Techmod and other decal manufacturers, and they have been excellent.. it's just these kits that still have the old type of decals.. Luckily I had 3 decal sheets I could use for the P-51 B, and I needed nearly all.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
Great pair and both well finished .
joluqa 1 year ago
@joluqa Thank you.. I hope to get a nice collection of all the USAAF Fighters used in the ETO during WWII.. so far I have done a few P-47's, and these two Mustangs! Will build a P-38 soon, and a P-61.. that should be just about it!! :)

@wolt96 It's only football.. we don't hate the Germans, and besides, it was the referees fault.. England played well, and so did Germany.. but the Ref lost the plot completely.. Anyway, this is a modelling channel, and a friendly channel to that, please refrain from abusive comments.. :) Thank you..
