I just took the new Thalys, on which they have renovated the interior design (only 2 trains have been through the renovation, more on the Thalys website).
Great in terms of comfort, and finally, individual power plugs for laptops in 1st/2nd class.
In terms of comfort, this new Thalys goes beyond the latest ICE3 (the recent ones going from Frankfurt to Paris): they were comfortable, but no plugs.
With the ferry to england, that is simply the best way to cross the channel. Departure from Belgium or France. Book never to eurotunnel. With his all in 2009 against euro tunnel. Ferry friends
brilliant video of high speed europe! for everybodys information, eurostars go from London - Paris, Brussels and to southern france and disneyland occasionally, TGV is a French train but goes to bits of belgium and germany, Thalys go to France, Germany,Belgium and Holland and ICE go from Germany but go to some bits of france and belgium
Because the US is so huge and advance, you do not need such a common system. Airplane is enough. If you have a chance, you should try different high-speed trains.
@sausare size is no excuse for a complete lack of an intercity (and intracity) rail transportation. In the United States, there are dozens of European sized corridors perfectly suited for High Speed Rail, yet they are not developed because our leaders do not prioritize such things. Meanwhile, countries like China are far outpacing our modernization plans, which have been lacking since the 1940's when rail started to decline in the United States.
@EsotericDesi The French one the world record whereas American has anything, you have that Amtrak has diesel which pollutes planet us one does not have the TGV it + fast in the world which does not pollute!
Yes. definitely. they are just incredible in their design. And I was so stupid and have never take a hispeed train.. Now I live in California and have to wait until they have built their hispeed system (2011). But ist will be great too.
Two weeks ago I took the TGV-Thalys there in Brussels Midi. Compared with the ICE-3 it's an old train, you can't compare it with the much more comfortable, modern ICE-3.
I really wish the US had a train system like France(or any other European country for that matter). It would be nice to be able to make a mid to short range commute without dealing with the airport.
I think it is possible in USA. Because the cost is huge, and it might not get a economy of scale probably. I remember that there will be a high speed train system in California in the future.
I think the problem is not subsidies. Amtrak is being slowly bled to death by politicians who have no desire to see it succeed. The French and German High Speed Rails were built by the government. TGV belongs to French government, ICE is a part of the (currently) state-run system in Germany. Political will is what's needed.
It's remarkable how government funding can produce something as remarkable and innovative as TGV in one country yet produce something like Amtrack in another. I don't know what the solution is when it comes to fixing Amtrack but the addition of competition against Amtrack and the lack of government subsidies couldn't hurt.
Lack of government subsidies means no passenger rail *at all*. It's not the subsidies that are the problem with Amtrak, it's chronic *underfunding* for 30 years that is/was the problem. This video shows what you can have with *proper* funding.
As an example, China has recently announced plans to spend about 3 times more money modernizing & expanding it's own rail system than Amtrak has received in its *entire* history.
@RailRide Not only that. When you have expanded the system to a certain degree, it will pay for itself one day. E.g. Deutsche Bahn makes a profit of $1 billion every year. The subsidies make traveling cheaper and even for free for children.
I think you're making an unfair comparison between an old generation TGV and brand new ICE 3 train. They're from completely different eras.
You have to remember the TGV system's been around since the early 1980s and different trains are different ages. The new ICE 3 trains are only a few years old. There are also new TGVs that are very impressive on board.
I went with the french TGV two days ago and I affirm you that their is no comparism with the german ICE3 or ICE-Velaro. The german train is much more comfortable and modern.
acutually itÄs not. All the speed records of the TGVs were specially modified trains just for that purpose. None of the regular ones can reach the 500+ that the TGV reached. However, the 400 reached by the ice's is genuine day to day operationl units.
Can't you just stop talking rubbish on all the videos dealing with the TGV ? The TGV never had any casualties on high speed lines, unlike the ICE-3. That is what has to be reminded first.
except that you forget that the ICE-3 has never had any casualties on high speed lines. the accident you're thinking of happened to an ICE-1 trainset on a semi-conventional line, not an NBS.
hello sausare, first ICE was a Frankfurt-Brussels leaving to depot, second double Thalys from Paris Nord first one goes to Amsterdam second stays in Brussel, a French TGV Reseau Tricourant set, next a Thalys PBA enters platform 5, greetings from Railtravelmanager Belgium
One day St. Pancars wiill be like this, Eurostar, ICE, RENFE and that Italian one.

So, just in my mind, for comfort:
1: New thalys
2: ICE 3
3: Old Thalys
5: Eurostar
4: French TGV

The only clear solution is to nationalize the RR.

ICE, Thalys and TGV only.

does eurostar go to germany?
razorblade1995 3 years ago
NO, Eurostar only goes to U.K. in Brussels. ICE and Thalys go to Germany but Tahlys only Koln.
sausare 3 years ago
Ok Thanks, one more question, why would they need the Thalys to go to Germany, why not just the ICE?
razorblade1995 3 years ago
This question I am not sure. Maybe the Thalys has a economies of scale for this line. And at the same time, demand creates supply.
sausare 3 years ago
Thalys, I think, is a French/Belgian/Dutch/German collaboration, ICE is just German, so they each get a slice of the cake this way, I expect.
AndreiTupolev 3 years ago
No the Thalys trains are French (modified TGV), but the Thalys company is French-Belgian-Dutch.

ICE3 ---> from 1999

Maybe. If our rail system is to improve at all I think the first thing that needs to be done is for the government to stop subsidizing Amtrak.
