  • goodness british tv is so more in depth then american tv shows, and they much smarter then us americans...or they are taking an amazing show like Avenue Q and making it more then what it really is and having a heated debate, compared to poltics, about a musical.

This is american, and made from the guys by South Park. I think the ppl who made Avenue Q didnt put that much thought into it like these guys did.

  • hehehehehe. That guy has a turban.

  • I loved it.

  • A Tony Award-winning puppet show with music and puppets. Really?! I never would have guessed that a puppet show would have puppets in it!

  • You people all suck... I hate these guys.. They don't understand the simple comedy in this musical at all...

  • i love how the guy mentioned team america which came after avenue q opened!! these people are idiots. "people who see musicals are passive they sit through garbage" struck a nerve for me. surely what people like is a matter of opinion!!!!!

  • @andrew3347 "surely what people like is a matter of opinion" well done you, you deserve a medal for that completely obvious statement.

  • ventriloquism (@ 3:06) ? is she stupid? the actors clearly are mouthing the lines and the songs! what they say is a HUGE bunch of crap -- this is meant to be watched with suspension of disbelief! gee they sure are too jaded to enjoy a brilliant show like this!

on a last note: "No one has made a monument of a critic." so there

  • What the hell is he Mark Kermode on about. He should stick to what he knows about and that is films. It is a clever and very funny show.

  • Am I the only one who thinks the guy with the glasses kinda looks like Rod?

  • it is a show come on! There are so many shows that are much worse and nobody bats an eyelid about that.

  • That glasses guy is a pompous, stuck up, elitist prick.

  • my mom wont let me watch this becuse am only 11 but i watch it anyway!!!!

  • Avenue Q is great, these clips are taken COMPLETELY out of context. I apologise for my country's apparent idiocy.

  • Wow. Most of the people reviewing this show need to go out, get drunk, and laid, for once in their lives.

Miserable people should not review things that are meant to be fun. They just want other people to feel as bad as they do.

  • Wait a second...it just occured to me that at 1:24 ....that isn't Jeff Whitty but Jeff Marx. I guess that sums up just how much Newsnight actually looked into this show....morons....

  • with music. and puppets.X)

  • i think the dude with glasses should just shut the fuck up! Avenue q is one of the best shows i've ever had is because, it's based on truth. People can't seem to accept that, it's exactly the same as a soap opera, you don't moan about soap opera's and their shit storylines do you??

    Avenue q rules!!

  • Amazed people paid to see the show.

  • hang on a secooooooooooooooooooooooooonx!!!

  • Hmm "We're all a little bit racist"... sorry, don't remember that number. If you're going to be pretentious and critique in this way, at least get the names of the songs right please.

    Love this show, brilliant entertainment!

  • I think the blonde woman (Julie?) makes the best points...

  • Some people have TOO much time on their hands to talk about stuff they know NOTHING about.

  • I agree with Kermode.

  • Newsnight reviewers are arseholes who know nothing but criticism. Basic fact. The show is amazing and one of the best things I've ever seen. I admire the reviwers for taking the mick whilst reviewing but the reviews could have been less sarcastic.

  • Newsnight review has always been full of pretentious people giving their 2 cents about the latest "culture". It's a dull and boring panel show and I doubt many people actually watch it for their dose of culture criticism. By the way, it's not that they are snobs, it's just they don't know any better.

Anyway, Avenue Q is a fantastic musical and is sorely missed over here now.

  • OH! ALL THOSE FUCKING COWS DONT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT! I BET THEY GO AND WATCH OPERA AND PAVAROTTI AND SHIT! AVENUE Q IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO WEST END

Avenue Q is about the hardships of life, being broke, afraid to come out!!!

Its funny and good! SO they can go FUCK THEMSELVES!

  • Wow that guy with the spunk in his hair is a fucking dick! lol

  • @JETBONDFU Yeah, hes a regular on this show. (I'm from the UK so see it qutie often) he is so so so pompous and full of himself.

  • Do these pompous people have to analyse every fecking thing?! It's a funny musical, just shut up and watch it!

  • I love the way Simon licks his lips at 1:48, awesome! :D

  • That guy should shut up. He thinks he knows everything - he dosen't. Idiot. Its amazing and everyone loves it!

  • Seems to me that they are all too much of Snobs with too much money who went expecting to see a 'Phantom of the opera' with puppets.

Av Q is an amazing light hearted, warm, good feel show. Not all musicals have to be of the Les Mis/Phantom dramatic show to be of good quality. The only thing wrong with Av Q is that its too short!

  • sesame street on acid...... how the hell is this sesame street on acid!?!?!? these people are retarded!

  • maybe the guy didn't like it because he bares a striking resemblance to rod. the gay blue puppet.

  • critics... talk... pish... End of.

  • 6:31 I was kind of disgusted by the man with glasses until he complimented Ann Harada.

  • At least Kermode said it was funny. It just annoys me that he thinks they were intending to be radical. They weren't. The point was to tell a realistic story that young people could relate to.

  • look at dat pink afro

  • The American guy doesnt know what hes talking about...as an actor he should be fairly open minded and easily able to 'suspend disbelief' yet here he is getting 'confused' over the puppet sex...what a dick.

  • What an idiot, the guy that doesn't like it even says that the audenice loved it, he's just a spoilt brat who has a diploma in self importance.

  • Hardeep Kohli is a fucking knob

  • Woww, I think they really missed the point, it's far from radical, it's just brilliant and more realistic than most tv shows/ musicals/ themes etc.

  • @VickyROFL Agreed.

  • His comment about time machines... I feel the same way about his hair.

  • That guy who dissed it needs to get his panties out of their twist and loosen up a little

  • when you want to know what i would say to this man on the left, then go to 1:49 :)

  • i saw this show in north Carolina just tonight! it wasnt the original cast obviously but it was AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • Avenue Q is AMAZING!!!

  • Four years on and Avenue Q is still going strong in the West End, so I guess the joke is on them!

  • the idea of having the actors on stage is for lots of reasons, 1 being that they add emotion to the puppets and 2 so they can walk around on stage and give this more 3D look to the performance instead of hiding behind a wall.

  • Jeez. These people have no idea what a decent musical is - Avenue Q just adressing what happens in real life - it just has puppets in it.

I may be biased but Avenue Q is a frickin' brilliant musical. The bloke on the left is blatently a twat.

  • FUCK THEM they wouldn't know a good musical if thehy slapped then across the face! I'm 14 and i loved Avenue Q, what they don't is that when it comes to puppets, there doesn't need a plot

  • You know it really annoys me when people who seemingly have little understanding of theatre. shows like this aren't meant to be realistic you twits. Theyre musicals!! musicals are songs, campity, often a love story of some kind and lots of humour. Of course its not realistic, since wen did anyone other than an actor/actress break into song randomly! And that guy is RLY annoying 'if anyone said 'everyones a little bit racist' theyd get away with it, of course they wouldnt, theyd be called racist!

  • I'm hating the guy whos dissing AQ. He obviously doesn't get it.

  • I'd seen Avenue Q just on the internet yet, but I just love it since the day, that I first saw a clip of it!

I think that it's important to tell the opinion about racism, problems, porn on the internet a.s.o!

It's well done in their songs and it gives you a moment of thinking about these difficult subjects in this current time. We use this vice of avoiding those topics because of being afraid of other opinions or answers. But it all belongs to our all-day -life!

So don't be too stolid and try!

  • this interview proves that a couple of stiff individuals should not be going to one of the most straight forward and truest musicals on the planet. i LOVE this musical. i saw the Broadway cast preform it, and now i can't stop thinking about it!

  • Tell me about it. Nobody *expected* a show like this after Sesame Street and Rainbow?

Exsqueeze me? baking powder? I can't have heard that right. *goes back*

Er, yes I did. Sorry, Newsnight, epic fail. Bert and Ernie were gay and living together, and we were cool with that. I enjoyed Avenue Q, because it openly said things that Sesame Street and the like couldn't.

And y'know what? it still teaches important issues!

  • ...they're thinking into it waaaay too much.

  • its kind of obvious that the guy on the left didnt understand it.... at all....

  • It's no ordinary puppet show, it's a Tony award winning puppet show with music and puppets.

Wouldn't be a puppet show without puppets, would it? You idiotic Indian Twat. When did humour die and leave these pesimistic fuckers in charge of what we are allowed to enjoy? FFS lighten the fuck up!

  • My god, that was a pathetic comment. Its a joke you fucktard.

  • Wow, genius.

"A musical puppet show. With music. And puppets." Woow, deep, man.

"Everyone's a little bit racist? That's rubbish! That's not true-"

"Clearly if you want to enjoy songs about masturbating to porn on the internet-"

Gooooooosh these guys have no sense of humour.

  • i rly dont like the guy with the pink towel on his head

  • Everyone likes Avenue Q except for that ugly guy.

    He should just shut up.

  • Comment removed

  • @dmnpuff - Oh, if only you understood who that "ugly guy" , but his reputation preceeds him, his credentials speak for themselves, and he is always the one brave enough to not cower and not say when something isn't worth the praise everyone heaps on. it's great to have someone with this integrity

  • The concluding sentence was great.

  • That guy needs to pull his finger out.

True most people who see plays are very inclined to this sort of thing but it puts a smile on your face.

To all you kiddies wanting to see it and their parents say NO NO YOUR MIND CAN'T HANDLE THAT.. Are full of crap because there is a silly sexy scene and they say fuck a few times. Jeebies, it's a great show and I recommend it. The puppets give it visual humour. I make my friends laugh all the time with my puppets. Great fun.

  • I agree Neyna99! D guy on d left is an ASS

  • i already hate this guy on the left...avenue q is great and he "has no idea", like trekkie monster would say xD

  • the guy on the far left looks like Greg Proops from far away.

  • @Hypnotoad27 Except hopefully Greg Proops isn't as much of an ass. :D

  • The quiff on the left is Mark Kermode, the humourless but influential film critic, who ought to know that the puppet sex scene in Avenue Q preceded Team America World Police by several years.

Kermode only really gets off on horror/torture porn movies and shouldn't be allowed to review anything with humerous content.

In this era of commercially driven vapid musical theatre, Avenue Q is a gem. Unique and unmissable.

  • It's true. Kermode is utterly joyless. It's very telling that he despises the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. A smug, elitist asshole if ever there was one.

  • Kermodes pod casts are full of humour

  • All these people are stupid. Avenue Q is a great show and these guys obviously don't understand American Pop Culture.

  • @TheFatComunist So it's not true that it's too late in the punch? I mean yeah fine, you like it but do you think you still would had you of seen 'Meet The Feebles' and 'South Park'? Them "not understanding American popculture" isn't it, they're just making a point about 'Avenue Q' being out of date.

    Is THAT not true?

  • @Raymint Do YOU understand American pop culture? Are you even American? I AM American and I do understand it. I have seen Meet the Feebles and South Park and I still thoroughly enjoy Avenue Q. Now that I watch, the only person that is really bashing it is that British arsehole on the left. He is can go die in a hole. And is it really out of date? Really? 3 Tony's and a massive American critical acclaim... I don't think that seems very out of date and neither does the rest of America. Thank you!

  • @TheFatComunist How about you answer my question instead of going around in circles - do you think 'Avenue Q' was late to the punch or not?

  • @Raymint I already did!!!! Can you not read your own language? I'll copy and paste what I've already said. "And is it really out of date? Really? 3 Tony's and a massive American critical acclaim... I don't think that seems very out of date and neither does the rest of America. Thank you!"

  • @TheFatComunist No, you're telling me what the rest of America thinks - and I'm asking you, taking into consideration what was around before it, despite how warmly embraced this production was; are the people who haven't embraced it talking shit? I mean is it not actually possible for 'Meet The Feebles' and 'South Park' to have desensitised a few audiences out their to the novelty of watching cuddly things being rude?

... Because you're saying they don't know what they're talking about.

  • @Raymint Fine, I'll be the bigger man here... I'm not going to continue arguing with you. It's useless. And it's childish. I have my own opinion based on where I live and you have yours based on where you live. Apparently the UK is more modern that America comically. That's great! And I'm fine with it. Now let me ask, "Are you ok with my opinion? Or are you going to be a stuck up jerk?" It's been nice talking with you. Good bye.

  • @TheFatComunist "Be the bigger man" - What, when you're still acting like a baby over us Brits calling something of yours dated? I mean what a narrow thing to say, "These guys obviously don't understand American pop culture". I guess they've never gotten it, the countless times they've had to write up shit about the stuff you always have down here. Yeah, that's right - based on where I am on this planet ... I've seen a bunch of other American stuff do this already. "Oh they don't understand us!"

  • @TheFatComunist You said it. I'm just calling you an idiot for it.

  • @Raymint And I'm called you an incoherient ass. Every Brit I've ever met has been stuck up. Look, were different, ok, but you're not bettern that me because your British and I'm not better than you because I'm American. The US likes Avenue Q and you don't. Fine. And honestly, I hardly understand British pop culture. And frankly, I don't care. Stop replying to my comments. Goodbye.

  • @TheFatComunist You can't call me that - "And I'm called you an incoherient ass", "You're not bettern that me because your British" - I mean, as far as I'm concerned, you just can't read to well. YOU'RE the one thinking I've just told you Britain's better because our critics think 'Avenue Q' was a dated idea. That's all coming from you ... because only an idiot would come the conclusion that their country has a better sense of humour when ONE American hasn't rubbed us the right way.

  • @TheFatComunist I think the reason you feel them (or we, to be broad) not caring too much about the show relates to "their British superiority complex" is because that's YOU. You made this a cultural thing - it was the reason I started this argument! Because if they were actually making a valid point about this sort of thing being done before, wouldn't that be down to them growing weary of the show's USP ... AND NOTHING TO DO WITH THEIR LACK OF AMERICAN SCHOOLING?

    Idiot.

  • Sorry to jump into this argument but I am British and love avenue q. I think it is funny and such a good musical. Only one guy didn't like avenue q in the vid and I know thousands of brits who love the musical and because it is so popular is now going on tour around the uk. Not all Brits are stuck up and same as America. We are all human and are all different. btw this isn't just aimed at you. I am just annoyed with people who think that all Brits are stuck up.

  • @lee02380 And I'm annoyed with all the people who think Americans are stupid. And I don't think all Brits are stuck up. Almost all the ones I've meet have been. They may not be naturaly, but as soon as they talk to me, they are, and it's because I'm American. But I'm glad that you agree and accept that everyones different. But I don't think this guy seems to understand the cultural difference between the UK and the US. This difference isn't a bad thing, it's what makes us who we are.

  • who's that fucking clown on the left?

arghhhh, get over yourself you twat!

  • The guy on the left is an absolute tosser! everyone loves Avenue Q!!!

  • The guy in the turban is so cool.

  • the host in the middle was really annoying. He wasnt one of the reviewers and u could tell he didnt like it. Everytime someone said something positive he made it sound negative. I also didnt like the guy on the far left.

  • you really have to learn to apriciate the program, i mean people laugh at the unusual or the obvious and this is unusual

  • Comment removed

  • what's "meet the feebles?"

  • "Meet the Feebles" is a full length feature film spoof of "The Muppet Show" made by Peter Jackson in 1989. It makes "Avenue Q" look very tame in comparison.

  • But what Avenue Q has over Meet the Feebles are characters that people can actually relate to.

  • Did they ever make an avenue Q dvd of the show? it would be awesome if they did. and why the hell are they debating about this? why are they so stuck on the fact that its" seseme street meet south park" I'm a teenager and i really loved the show, and my mum who went to see it with me loved it. it's for everyone but it depends on your sense of humour i guess. If you dont agree with some of the issues raised in it or hate strong language just don't bother seeing it.I agree its meant to be playful

  • Its in Melbourne this June and I would absolutley love to see it. I've been a fan for months, but my Mum is undecided about letting me go, because it's for 'mature teenagers'. I'm fourteen and pretty mature for my age. What do you think? How old were you when you went?

  • i was and am 15. It was amazing. My mum was a bit unsure at first too. we bought tickets, and she found it hillarious as well as us teens. I think u'll be fine (as long as u're not too freaked out by puppet nudity and sex) lol. The worst song in the show is "loud as the hel you want" so I'd check that out before you decide to take your mum. If you decide that you don't care if your mum would be lyk OMG then just dont show it to her if you're looking to convince her to take you. ;p

  • Great, thanks for all the tips. (: Mum is seriously considering it, but I have to ask again nearer to the date. Parents, eh?

    Thanks again. (:

  • true..puppet love?=_='

  • They're focusing on the way in which the show was marketed, as opposed to the show itself. It got stuck with that "Sesame Street meets South Park" line early, but it never set out to be that. What Avenue Q was intended to be was something that young people could relate to. Something that could make them laugh and actually move them. It wasn't supposed to be radical, but what it has over South Park or Meet the Feebles are characters that you care about.

  • im suprised anyone on tv remembers meet the feebles

  • omg, that man on the left is such an idiot!! lol... Look, its just a musical, and if he didnt like it he doesnt have to try and spoil it for everyone else!! I've seen loads of shows at the West End and none of them have made me laugh as much as Avenue Q. I hate theatre critics so much as they are always going on about the negative aspects of theatre... but lets face it, if they really thought they wouldnt like it, they wouldnt have gone to see it....

  • This has actually made me angry! Particularly the man on the far left. He says sentances that don't even make any grammatical sense! "it doesn't hit itself over the head for being so painfully politically correct as it is whilst complaining about everyone else being politically correct"

And the bit about no storyline: it has as much storyline as an educational kids' show on which this is based!

Anyone else out there angry about being called a "passive theatre goer" that "sits through rubbish"?

  • i agreed with you completly i dont agree with the part when the guy says something about how it seems like the acters are there. when the music starts it doesnt seem like that at all!!!

  • Absolutely! Also, the Gary Coleman reference is appropriate in the context of the setting. Avenue Q is where you go when you can't go anywhere else. The fact that Gary Coleman jokes were beginning to get old-hat is perfectly fitting.

  • Plus what the guy is clearly unaware with (something I dislike about TV theatre crits; they NEVER do their research) was that in preview performances all references to Gary Coleman were in fact removed but were restored at the response of BRITISH audiences. Clearly this nobber is in the minority of not knowing who Gary Coleman is.

  • whos the guy on the left with the glasses? hes "rubbish"

  • How many times do they say "radical"? The word is OVERUSED!! They're just trying to sound smart when newsflash: THEY'RE NOT!! Avenue Q deserves so much more credit than this.

  • Agreed.

  • did that thcik-headded dumbass seriously say that Avenue Q was "painfully policaly correct"???

    !!!!!!!!!!!

    he deserves to be drowned.

  • haha this guy is a such a tool

  • Skrew you

  • That guy who critised it is so fukin annoying why do people have to be so rude? as if he could ever come up with something as original as avenue q and the cast is amazing!

  • Summary: OMFG PUPPETS!?!1!?

  • I wish the presenter would die.

    I really do.

  • That guy in the glasses had no idea what he was talking about!!!!

    AVENUE Q IS AWESOME!!!!

I've seen it 2 times already and I'm going to see it again in January (before it closses down unfortunatly)

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but at 1:22 does it introduce Jeff Marx the composer/lyricist as Jeff Whitty the Book Writer?

What a stupid mistake...all to be expected from Newsnight Review apparently.

  • No, writer of the script of Avenue Q's performances.

  • "its a puppet show, but not an ordinary puppet show - a tony award winining puppet show, with music...and puppets"

    Are you fucking KIDDING ME?!

  • Kermode gets it so wrong. Gary Coleman isn't some random joke. The whole point is that no one knows who he is anymore, cos the show's about people telling you you're special when you're a kid and then getting thrown out into the real world where the message is different. And unlike Meet the Feebles and Team America, Ave Q isn't SUPPOSED to be just a dirty puppet show. It has heart. South Park's probably dirtier in 10 seconds, but do you know what? I don't give a shit about any of the characters.

  • just went to watch it yesterday andit's amazing!

  • OMG! Avenue Q is here in Singapore and i can't wait for the show this thursday!

  • The guy in the suit with the glasses and the sort of spiked up hair is a complete wanker! Why are they all taking it so seriously!? And everyone is actually a little bit racist...FACT! I mean they were all idiots sitting there, but I especialy hated that man with the glasses and the hair! Avenue Q is amazing and is one of, if not the best musical ever!!!!!!!

  • Honestly, I sought of agree with you; not the "everyone's a little bit racist" bit (I feel that doesn't stretch to every person)but the critic is a bit argumentative and sort of a smart arse.

  • It's funny because they're so serious about it.

  • "Are so passive , they sit through GARBAGE!"

OH MY GOD! FUCK YOU YOU HAG!!

Way to go , insulting the whole audience!

  • That was so patronising, wasn't it? Newsnight's horrible. They essentially moan alot about things other people create, without creating anything themselves. Urgh.

  • I hate critics in general .. but these are te worst

  • i soo agree with you this guys pissed me off so much!! Avenue q isnt garbage!! ¬¬ grrrr

  • hahahahaha.

I had my volume turned off and I'm like 'wtf?' so when I turned it up it was all "the celebration of pornography" xDDDD

  • fucking hell somebody just give them a kinder egg and a hug. Then tell them to shut the fuck up

  • Mark Kemode is such a douche.

  • What?!!

  • He really is. I lost all respect for the man when he claimed to have not heard of the Simpsons...?!

  • COMEDY, COMEDY

    haha!

  • is he trying to say being gay is wrong or unsuitable...i mean i know people say that...but I dont really get it

  • people need to just lighten up. It's a comedy!!!! lol

  • kill the blonde one!!!

  • oh my lord, watching that made me want to punch everyone on the panel

i absolutely hate critics, they're just people who didnt make it into the business and so want to complain about everything for some kind of vengeance

  • It was just that one guy and he clearly did not get it. And it is truly fun and true, folks, and go see it.

  • The red tie guy is similar Brian... In everything xD

  • Nicky's guy puppiteir is hot XD

  • Mark Kermode didn't really get it. The fundamental difference between something like Ave Q and say, Meet the Feebles is that this is emotionally involving. I don't think it is trying to be radical, I think it's trying to be real.

  • I cant wait for Avenue Q to come to Australia i love the song "everyones a little bit racist" its so true

appernetly AGary Coleman tryed to sue them but no one would represent him

  • With music!

    and puppets.

  • also id like to the the point made about not having an intervall and makine it a 70min show is bollox. she obiesly dont understand the point of an intervall, its for the actors who need time to stop and take a drink. its virtually impossible to do a full west end show without a break!!!

  • RIGHT OK!!!!!

firstly this vidieo is about avenue q not phantom of the oprea or les miserables. now this is a fantastic light hearted show and is not ment to be discused in such a deep mannor. CRITICS are called "critics" for a reason they would critosize the best show in the world if they had the chance they are all twats!!!

I myself am a west end actor and know what it feels like to be critosized by people like them!

    cheers :-D

  • ohh i'd love to see the production ^^

  • jon jon jon!! x3

  • SIMON SIMON SIMON ! Mode Kate Monster off: ^^

  • That american guy is an idiot and does not know what he is talking about. It is an amazin musical

  • Who's that idiot that doesn't like it? Whoever he is, I think he's a divvy.

My mum, sister, boyfriend AND me loved it, SO THERE!

    Natty xxxxxxxx.

  • God I hate Mark Kermode.

  • He is a remarkably bitter little man.

  • What the fuck?

  • The woman in the white dress is the one person there who really "got it", although I don't agree with her about it not having a plot... I think the reason this show annoyed Kermode is because of the way it was marketting. It got stuck with that whole Sesame Street meets South Park thing, but I mean it's no where near as edgy as SP. But I think it has something that South Park certainly doesn't have which is loads of heart. I came away from this show feeling really uplifted.

  • I like the blonde woman. But it seems like they keep changing their mind from liking it to not liking it. Does it sound a bit condescending to anyone else? I dunno -- that's just what I got from it.

  • it is the best show i have ever seen they have never seen it ans shut about talking about things they know nothing about it

  • wow, if turban dude was on a show in america, we'd probably have political issues and maybe some rocks being thrown through the studio windows.

  • Strange considering he's a sikh - a minority entirely irrelevant to any discriminative jingoistic American opinion. "Look there's a raghead!!! Get him!!"

  • Kermode is right YET again...

  • Well.. To a certain extent... I don't think Avenue Q would have bothered him as much if it hadn't been for the way it was marketed.

  • They must have really hated it to give it 7mins on TV.
