I did exactly this when I first got my arcade cabinet. It came without a game board and since I didn't have a PC to put in it yet, the logical choice was a Sega Genesis because of its easy RGB out and controller interfacing.
I had it running like that for like a week until I got a PC for it, and coincidentally enough I also played Sonic 2!
