I think the revival is beautiful. It would be beautiful to see the Chamorro pull from their Micronesian heritage for a more authentic dance, put either way, I applaud wholeheartedly when I see my Austronesian brothers and sisters all across the islands reaching back to the mana of our common ancestors!
The ancient chamorros were micronesians closely related to yapese n palauans but then came along the Spanish n screwed up their race by killing most of the chammorro men and then introducing Filipino's to intermarry and mess up the true chammorro/micronesian bloodline... The chammorro now days are actually really Filipino more than pacific islanders. Just look at other pacific islands the native people of Micronesia, Polynesia n Melanesia are dark skin people.

Pretty cool chant...to both the Ausi dude and the Tongan dude...Guam Chamorros are different from the CNMI Chamorros (Saipan). @Taipati671 I will not deny the fact that our descedants are from Asia, migrating into Micronesia and Polynesia, however you must accept the changes over time, ESPECIALLY when the Spaniards arrived into Guam. Its evidently been that way up until now via the food, language, traditional wear, and dances. You're clearly in denial of the fact that these "made up" dances of Guam, having no historical evidence to support this. A DVD-doc called Dances of life has Mr. Rabon admitting these claims.

why do we spell it GuaHan and not GuaJan? do we prefer the english use of the alphabet over the spanish? Chamorro was first written by the spaniards based on their alphabet and phonetic rules. why did we switch to the english use of the H when we spell Guahan? should my brother change his name to Hose from Jose? even the letter K replaced C. my grandma should spell her name Koncepcion?
sure its easy to say tourism promotes guam but what is a tourist going to do for the islands culture, who will benefit ? financial stress wont promote culture, a dollar bill wont make a person understand their history, tourism wont bring our people out of this culture depression. it will be us and on our own terms! and why the heck are we going to perform a sacred chant out of context? whats the point of it anymore. the problem is not borrowing other cultures it starts with our mind sets.
above comment is mine. napu03. well to continue we have to develope a new way of thinking. simply put its called decolonizing the mind. we have to stop catering to tourist, we have been doing it for the last 25 years and look where it got us. poorly established by frank rabon (yes i said it) and for the wrong motives. sadly put, it wasn't done right. like other tourist capturing cultures, you see its underlying culture dwindling (spell check). lastly we only chant for our people no one else!
our people? please define what that means? then maybe you should lock yourselves up in a room and chant all you like. believe me.. i won't miss you guys a bit.
our people? wtf do you think it mean stupid? no one care what you believe, we don't even give a f*#k if you miss us. who the heck are you anyway? your just another coconut, brown on the outside white on the inside.
thats what i expect from a bitch ass whore like yourself. Guam is better if your malformed family and coward breed die like the piece of shit you are.
gosh, i will explain because i get the feeling you need it. "our people" does not refer to the living nor people like you, our chants pay respects to the people of the past "taotaomo'na. so, we don't care wtf you think. what we do is something people like you can't comprehend
people pay top dolla to watch the an opera, see a ballet, or listen to a symphony. people paying to experience art and culture. funny how our own chamorro people are taking hula lessons. the dollar is their incentive. wouldn't it be wonderful if we could pay them to perform our own chamorro dances? it would make them feel more proud of themselves by performing their own true dances.
lol, you seriously don't know what your talking about. i get elated when i hear comments like yours. i know i can't open your limited mind capacity to critical studies. did you not read my previous comments? (can't read? guess so) if you did you would know why you can't just buy culture, if we all just paid for culture it wouldn't be culture anymore. do you get it? i don't think you do. traditional you don't pay to "dance" but in chamoru culture we call it "chant" f*#k face.
why is it that all the so called 'ancient' style of dance seem so serious. there is no smiling ever. i have yet to see a performance of 'ancient' styles that is more festive & incorporates smiles & happy rhythms. ive done reading on what the spaniards recorded about the ancients, and i have read that our ancestors were quite festive and happy in their celebrations. tourists are not going to want to see a bunch of pissed off, bad attitude dancers. they want to see happy faces and fun. i do too!
also, many of the 'ancient' styles that i have seen here on youtube, are LACKING in COLOR. even this performance would be more visually appealing if they added more color. i really hope to see 'ancient' styles that are more happy and festive. i love the hispanic dances because they are more colorful and the dancers are always smiling. did the spanish teach us to smile? they must have, because by watching these dances... it seems that Chamorros were very miserable people until the spanish arrived.
Looker68 this group is about re-constructing traditionally styled chants. If you want a more "visually appealling" group you can find there are plenty other on island that do that sort of thing. Looking good is not apart of this group mission.
are there any traditional styled chants that appear more festive? what is the mission of this group? to create awareness? tourism is one of the best ways to create awareness dont you think? are there ancient styles of dance that are festive? if so, id like to see them.
tourism is not one of the best ways to create awareness, the target audience does not benefit the local community in revitalizing old traditions. What it can do is hurt the actual meaning in the chants if we commodify it to suit tourism. Yes, there are festive chants, but the western view of festive might not what you think they are. Western society will paint you a picture of grass skirt and coconut bras but really there were little to no clothes and the movements have been exaggerated.
tourism IS one of the best ways. as more interest from tourists comes, the demand will increase and the local community will have to meet the demand. if tourists are paying to see these dances, it provides incentive for our local youngsters to get involved. the hawaiian hula had a rivival because of tourism. and yes, maybe there is some commodifying of the dances, but basic awareness and distinction of Chamorro will result. tourism is a major reason that island dances continue today.
how naive, hawaiian "traditional" hula is not what you see at hotels and tourist events. if you saw "traditional" hula people like you would criticize it as you are now. please do some studying before you make judgements about how hula was revived. tourism is a tool and marketing scheme that sells on fantasy not accuracy. if you have the youth thinking what they are doing is traditional when it is not you create a votex of a mislead generation. what purpose does that serve? i will continue...
the more we cater to tourism the more we lose sight of the original meaning of the practice, whether it is chant or other practices. tradition does not sell, accuracy does not sell, and awareness does not sell. attend these events and see how much is really accurate. as you mentioned money as an incentive that in itself goes against the purpose of many chants. what you see displayed for tourist is not island dance but fantasy and that does not justify it a surviving or continuing today.
but who are the chants addressing? are the addressing ancient gods of the chamorros? if so, have we compromised the spirituality of the chants since most of the group members are probably catholic/christian? can these chants be viewed as religious? or a recreation? an act? even the so called traditional hula is performed by dancers of many faiths.
yet at the same time. hawaiian culture is one of the most celebrated around the world. and it has been embraced by so many non-hawaiians. i think chamorros feel left out. and we are envious of hawaii's accomplishments. that is why you see so many of our so called chamorro dances emmulating hawaiian styles. historically, tourism and entertainment has played a major role in reviving and sustaining cultural arts. we just need to make sure guam tourism revives chamorro culture, not hawaiian.
historically?! let me ask you this, do you even know when and how tourism originated? bet you can't! historically?! please, tourism has played an equal part at destroying ones culture? i'm elated that your thinking only got you this far. you were raised in the states right? take some college level courses, it might help you but you never know.
i took college level couses. tourism couses too. so many places use tourism as a way to promote their culture. historically, it is proven. what happened in guam is that we borrowed polynesian culture to promote our island. it would be like new orleans using country music instead of jazz to promote themselves. if done the right way, tourism can be our best ally in creating a new Chamorro pride.
its either your an incompetent student or your professors a joke, i'm thinking the former. don't tell me your a history major cause i'm going to laugh. history, does not prove tourism promotes culture (read past comments). many case groups i've studied include hawaii, northern china, and indonesia loss considerable culture knowledge because of the direct compensation for tourism. what you observe with these cultures is not the reality, it take more analytical thinking, which you havent reached.
once you pay, once you commodify ones culture it becomes entertainment. don't you even compare opera, ballet, or symphony to our "chamoru" chants. Our chants have historical relevancy, but i guess you didn't know that and are too far consumed in westernized ideologies that you can sale even yourself. tell me did your family sale their land and put their tail inbetween their leg when they headed for the states?
every chamorro has some family that lives in the states. and not all land was sold in order to go to the states. some land was taken and given the circumstances during those times, some families had no other option. it was survival for them. guam has been westernized since the spanish days. they brought western religion and ideologies to us and the fact that many chamorros are catholics shows that we are westernized. by the way, lots of the most famous operas are historically based. idiot!
your missing the point bitch! and survival my ass, you cunt. leaving your home land for the colonizing state is like swimming in shark infested waters with your entrails falling out and expecting to survive. there is always an option in any situation, your making excuses for your cowardliness or your families cowardliness. westernization is an ideology its not inherent, you don't have to by into it, like you have. hello, kahulo'! go back to school.
then i guess the should just get rid of all the costumes and sit in the bed of a pickup and chant. the whole tribal look is a farce if it is the spirituality that you want to convey. we live in a very 'visually' influenced society. image can be used to communicate so much. if you want reach the people, visual appeal can be a great tool in promoting your message. especially since most of the young generation cannot understand the language. it can spark interest with the younger generation.
since most of the new generation of Chamorros does not understand the chants, maybe you should make it a part to appeal to them visually. i think it could create more interest in your group. who wants to join a group that appears to be angry and unhappy?
((This is NOT the original dance. It was the Bailan Espanot. Mr. Frank Rabon and Mr. Leonard Iriarte made this up ))
The Spanish came after the indigenous people so the Bailan Espanot is NOT an original dance. the original was banned by the priest due to the adoptive religion of Catholicism which declined the original language as well and intertwined with many Spanish loan words.
Remember what you said!(pacificrules). You are mistaken. We are original.
@Taipati671 really?.?. Were you there 500 years ago to know that this was EXACTLY what these dances looks like before the Spaniards took over? Just ask any Guam-historian and they can attest to the Spanish influences in Guam rather than these "made up" dances. Shoot, we can back to all the vintage photos of Guam (thru Google) as well as all the other Pacific Islands and see for ourselves.
This is NOT the original dance. It was the Bailan Espanot. Mr. Frank Rabon and Mr. Leonard Iriarte made this up (DVD ref: DANCES OF LIFE). They've incorporated Polynesian and Micronesian dances into a non-indigenous Chamorro dance. The Spaniards eradicated the original dance circa 1500s and introduced Spanish influences(existing over 500yrs)which incoporated into the Chamorro traditions and custom way of life. To Mr. Rabon and Mr. Iriarte, its either hot or cold, AUTHENTICITY vs. FORGERY. Hafa?
Unfortunately you have mislead. Mr. Iriarte does not call it indigenous nor original. It is re-constructed through research. Plus Chamorros are Micronesian my region and culturally connected closely to the Yapese (Yap) and Palauans (Palau) through the lapita pottery and the beetlenut chewing.
It is A SAD STORY that many parts of cultures have erased from generation but information that may restore it are located throughout the world in history museums. As the people of Guam and CNMI. Read!
Where do we find these books so we may learn and spread the knowledge? I thank the people of Guahan and CNMI. I hope that we all can unite. We have been divided for long. We are stronger together.
Please let me know where we can get cds and books.
This looks a little like the 'haka' of the Maori people of New Zealand. What are the costumes based on? Do any of these groups have a website I can look at? What is the history behind the chants and dance moves? Were the chants always so aggressive? Or were they more solemn and spiritual?
So true, the hotels make lots of money on the drinks during the shows. Tourists are looking to be entertained. I applaud this groups efforts, but I don't see this type of chanting being part of a dinner show. Spirituality is always sacrficed when it comes to making money.
I Fanlalai'an.. beautiful job. It is amazing to see such young individuals such as yourselves have the determination to share your original heritage, values, and traditions with people from all over the world. Many people who are not from Guam fail to realize that this group is as original as they come. Keep up the research of the ancient Chamoru language.
Your style of dancing is definitely different from what has evolved in Guam. I was visiting two summers ago and was amazed to see the participation of all the children from elementary to young adults. You're different and that's okay! It's our culture and that's all that matters. Susteni i kuturan i Chamoru!
You know, your group is among the few groups that have authentic chamorro chants and what not. you should start performing in tumon, because the polynesian dance groups are dominant down there, and probably throughout the rest of the island. it's kind of embarrassing, and dumb how all these other groups mimic the hawaiian cultural dances, when i don't think we are hawaiian. am i correct? we're CHAMORRO, now let's show the world what we've got.
Absolutely correct! If you feel that way help the group out! Come join us and bring more people to come and visit us! Let us be heard! Be part of the cultural movement of the indigenous arts...
A message fro a part-Native Hawaiian YouTuber:
I think the revival is beautiful. It would be beautiful to see the Chamorro pull from their Micronesian heritage for a more authentic dance, put either way, I applaud wholeheartedly when I see my Austronesian brothers and sisters all across the islands reaching back to the mana of our common ancestors!

above comment is mine. napu03. well to continue we have to develope a new way of thinking. simply put its called decolonizing the mind. we have to stop catering to tourist, we have been doing it for the last 25 years and look where it got us. poorly established by frank rabon (yes i said it) and for the wrong motives. sadly put, it wasn't done right. like other tourist capturing cultures, you see its underlying culture dwindling (spell check). lastly we only chant for our people no one else!
napu03 3 years ago
our people? please define what that means? then maybe you should lock yourselves up in a room and chant all you like. believe me.. i won't miss you guys a bit.
cham0rro 3 years ago
our people? wtf do you think it mean stupid? no one care what you believe, we don't even give a f*#k if you miss us. who the heck are you anyway? your just another coconut, brown on the outside white on the inside.
napu03 3 years ago
well you seem to be a local asshole. brown on the outside and full of shit on inside.
cham0rro 2 years ago
thats what i expect from a bitch ass whore like yourself. Guam is better if your malformed family and coward breed die like the piece of shit you are.
napu03 2 years ago
gosh, i will explain because i get the feeling you need it. "our people" does not refer to the living nor people like you, our chants pay respects to the people of the past "taotaomo'na. so, we don't care wtf you think. what we do is something people like you can't comprehend
napu03 3 years ago
people pay top dolla to watch the an opera, see a ballet, or listen to a symphony. people paying to experience art and culture. funny how our own chamorro people are taking hula lessons. the dollar is their incentive. wouldn't it be wonderful if we could pay them to perform our own chamorro dances? it would make them feel more proud of themselves by performing their own true dances.
cham0rro 3 years ago
lol, you seriously don't know what your talking about. i get elated when i hear comments like yours. i know i can't open your limited mind capacity to critical studies. did you not read my previous comments? (can't read? guess so) if you did you would know why you can't just buy culture, if we all just paid for culture it wouldn't be culture anymore. do you get it? i don't think you do. traditional you don't pay to "dance" but in chamoru culture we call it "chant" f*#k face.
napu03 3 years ago
why is it that all the so called 'ancient' style of dance seem so serious. there is no smiling ever. i have yet to see a performance of 'ancient' styles that is more festive & incorporates smiles & happy rhythms. ive done reading on what the spaniards recorded about the ancients, and i have read that our ancestors were quite festive and happy in their celebrations. tourists are not going to want to see a bunch of pissed off, bad attitude dancers. they want to see happy faces and fun. i do too!
L00KER68 3 years ago
also, many of the 'ancient' styles that i have seen here on youtube, are LACKING in COLOR. even this performance would be more visually appealing if they added more color. i really hope to see 'ancient' styles that are more happy and festive. i love the hispanic dances because they are more colorful and the dancers are always smiling. did the spanish teach us to smile? they must have, because by watching these dances... it seems that Chamorros were very miserable people until the spanish arrived.

Looker68 this group is about re-constructing traditionally styled chants. If you want a more "visually appealling" group you can find there are plenty other on island that do that sort of thing. Looking good is not apart of this group mission.
napu03 3 years ago
are there any traditional styled chants that appear more festive? what is the mission of this group? to create awareness? tourism is one of the best ways to create awareness dont you think? are there ancient styles of dance that are festive? if so, id like to see them.
L00KER68 3 years ago
tourism is not one of the best ways to create awareness, the target audience does not benefit the local community in revitalizing old traditions. What it can do is hurt the actual meaning in the chants if we commodify it to suit tourism. Yes, there are festive chants, but the western view of festive might not what you think they are. Western society will paint you a picture of grass skirt and coconut bras but really there were little to no clothes and the movements have been exaggerated.
napu03 3 years ago
tourism IS one of the best ways. as more interest from tourists comes, the demand will increase and the local community will have to meet the demand. if tourists are paying to see these dances, it provides incentive for our local youngsters to get involved. the hawaiian hula had a rivival because of tourism. and yes, maybe there is some commodifying of the dances, but basic awareness and distinction of Chamorro will result. tourism is a major reason that island dances continue today.
L00KER68 3 years ago
how naive, hawaiian "traditional" hula is not what you see at hotels and tourist events. if you saw "traditional" hula people like you would criticize it as you are now. please do some studying before you make judgements about how hula was revived. tourism is a tool and marketing scheme that sells on fantasy not accuracy. if you have the youth thinking what they are doing is traditional when it is not you create a votex of a mislead generation. what purpose does that serve? i will continue...
napu03 3 years ago
the more we cater to tourism the more we lose sight of the original meaning of the practice, whether it is chant or other practices. tradition does not sell, accuracy does not sell, and awareness does not sell. attend these events and see how much is really accurate. as you mentioned money as an incentive that in itself goes against the purpose of many chants. what you see displayed for tourist is not island dance but fantasy and that does not justify it a surviving or continuing today.
napu03 3 years ago
but who are the chants addressing? are the addressing ancient gods of the chamorros? if so, have we compromised the spirituality of the chants since most of the group members are probably catholic/christian? can these chants be viewed as religious? or a recreation? an act? even the so called traditional hula is performed by dancers of many faiths.
L00KER68 3 years ago
yet at the same time. hawaiian culture is one of the most celebrated around the world. and it has been embraced by so many non-hawaiians. i think chamorros feel left out. and we are envious of hawaii's accomplishments. that is why you see so many of our so called chamorro dances emmulating hawaiian styles. historically, tourism and entertainment has played a major role in reviving and sustaining cultural arts. we just need to make sure guam tourism revives chamorro culture, not hawaiian.
cham0rro 3 years ago
historically?! let me ask you this, do you even know when and how tourism originated? bet you can't! historically?! please, tourism has played an equal part at destroying ones culture? i'm elated that your thinking only got you this far. you were raised in the states right? take some college level courses, it might help you but you never know.
napu03 3 years ago
i took college level couses. tourism couses too. so many places use tourism as a way to promote their culture. historically, it is proven. what happened in guam is that we borrowed polynesian culture to promote our island. it would be like new orleans using country music instead of jazz to promote themselves. if done the right way, tourism can be our best ally in creating a new Chamorro pride.
islanchamoru 2 years ago
its either your an incompetent student or your professors a joke, i'm thinking the former. don't tell me your a history major cause i'm going to laugh. history, does not prove tourism promotes culture (read past comments). many case groups i've studied include hawaii, northern china, and indonesia loss considerable culture knowledge because of the direct compensation for tourism. what you observe with these cultures is not the reality, it take more analytical thinking, which you havent reached.

once you pay, once you commodify ones culture it becomes entertainment. don't you even compare opera, ballet, or symphony to our "chamoru" chants. Our chants have historical relevancy, but i guess you didn't know that and are too far consumed in westernized ideologies that you can sale even yourself. tell me did your family sale their land and put their tail inbetween their leg when they headed for the states?
napu03 3 years ago
every chamorro has some family that lives in the states. and not all land was sold in order to go to the states. some land was taken and given the circumstances during those times, some families had no other option. it was survival for them. guam has been westernized since the spanish days. they brought western religion and ideologies to us and the fact that many chamorros are catholics shows that we are westernized. by the way, lots of the most famous operas are historically based. idiot!
islanchamoru 2 years ago
your missing the point bitch! and survival my ass, you cunt. leaving your home land for the colonizing state is like swimming in shark infested waters with your entrails falling out and expecting to survive. there is always an option in any situation, your making excuses for your cowardliness or your families cowardliness. westernization is an ideology its not inherent, you don't have to by into it, like you have. hello, kahulo'! go back to school.
napu03 2 years ago
then i guess the should just get rid of all the costumes and sit in the bed of a pickup and chant. the whole tribal look is a farce if it is the spirituality that you want to convey. we live in a very 'visually' influenced society. image can be used to communicate so much. if you want reach the people, visual appeal can be a great tool in promoting your message. especially since most of the young generation cannot understand the language. it can spark interest with the younger generation.
kuraku3 2 years ago
since most of the new generation of Chamorros does not understand the chants, maybe you should make it a part to appeal to them visually. i think it could create more interest in your group. who wants to join a group that appears to be angry and unhappy?
L00KER68 3 years ago
Also in regards to your statement
((This is NOT the original dance. It was the Bailan Espanot. Mr. Frank Rabon and Mr. Leonard Iriarte made this up ))
The Spanish came after the indigenous people so the Bailan Espanot is NOT an original dance. the original was banned by the priest due to the adoptive religion of Catholicism which declined the original language as well and intertwined with many Spanish loan words.
Remember what you said!(pacificrules). You are mistaken. We are original.
Taipati671 3 years ago
@Taipati671 really?.?. Were you there 500 years ago to know that this was EXACTLY what these dances looks like before the Spaniards took over? Just ask any Guam-historian and they can attest to the Spanish influences in Guam rather than these "made up" dances. Shoot, we can back to all the vintage photos of Guam (thru Google) as well as all the other Pacific Islands and see for ourselves.

@Taipati671 Here's one website micsem.org and then click on photos..

@Taipati671 Which cultural influence are you more accepting of now? AMERICAN or SPANISH?
CHAM0RRITO 1 year ago
FORGERY. Hafa?

cheese671 3 years ago
Unfortunately you have mislead. Mr. Iriarte does not call it indigenous nor original. It is re-constructed through research. Plus Chamorros are Micronesian my region and culturally connected closely to the Yapese (Yap) and Palauans (Palau) through the lapita pottery and the beetlenut chewing.
It is A SAD STORY that many parts of cultures have erased from generation but information that may restore it are located throughout the world in history museums. As the people of Guam and CNMI. Read!
Taipati671 3 years ago
Where do we find these books so we may learn and spread the knowledge? I thank the people of Guahan and CNMI. I hope that we all can unite. We have been divided for long. We are stronger together.
Please let me know where we can get cds and books.

@Taipati671 ok question....what is with the beetlenut chewing....ive tried it...i can't understand how anyone kept in their mouth long enough...

Susteni i kuturan i Chamoru!
chocho719 4 years ago
You know, your group is among the few groups that have authentic chamorro chants and what not. you should start performing in tumon, because the polynesian dance groups are dominant down there, and probably throughout the rest of the island. it's kind of embarrassing, and dumb how all these other groups mimic the hawaiian cultural dances, when i don't think we are hawaiian. am i correct? we're CHAMORRO, now let's show the world what we've got.
straightup671 5 years ago
Absolutely correct! If you feel that way help the group out! Come join us and bring more people to come and visit us! Let us be heard! Be part of the cultural movement of the indigenous arts...
