In Rastafari and Biblical mythology, Babylon serves as the ultimate historical symbol of wicked earthly excesses of human civilization where power, wealth, greed and valued over all else. Many psalms and verses in both beliefs celebrate the 'fall of [ancient] Babylon' by the slave classes as a triumph for true believers who haven't forgotten the teachings of God or Jah. Classic David & Goliath type mythology.
no, we don't hate nobody! Babylon was before Iraq there, and also we mean a spiritual Babylon wich is the big City and some Islamist fight against that too ... Babylon is every white and black downpressor and slavemaster!
Otherwise, I don't have nothing against Islam!!! But I just don't know why should we worship somebody who come after the Creator, when I can worship the Creator self?

@DidntYouOhNo300 Jeho is the name of a pagan deity . There is no J in the original scrolls of AbrUW Hebrew nor the Greek languages and is still that way today. Your belief is that of the Greco Roman Catholic Christian Perspective, as is much of the scattered sheep of Yahuwah's are.
babylon had an empire lead the infamous Nebuchadnezzar he is famed to have been a terrible dictator and a merciless ruler so to the Rasta man any power that exhibits the traits of "Babylon the great" and its rulers are so named and abhorred so where ever such a system of ruler-ship is found the represent modern babylon and "dem affi get a beaten" jus like babylonof old.
Ancient babylon was a city built by the Romans or some equally dirty white people from Europe, therefore you should reject any notion that that wicked place/people are a part of your Iraqi culture and heritage. Constantinople (king of Babylon) was a christian, and along with Alexander the "Great" basically helped to destroy all ancient culture and beliefs of your ancestors, thereby replacing it with ideas that this city was part of YOUR history.
@dbfsjkshutup Dude. Constantine was the King of Babylon Constantinople was Babylon after it was renamed. Second Babylon wasn't founded by Romans or "some equally dirty white race from Europe." It was founded by people in the Middle East and included the Hanging Gardens. 3rd if you really believe in the notion of all the songs peter tosh has written you wouldnt be as cruel as you were when you wrote that.
My friend, I admired your comment to (dbfsjkshutup) as you really know and respect history. Strange that some people build mountains of hatred for something based on wrong information. Have my best regards and respect . . .
My friend, the real ancient Babylon was built by the ancient Iraqis living on the land of the two rivers MESOPOTAMIA, which is my land as I'm Iraqi. And because of the attack of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon to Judah which is Palestine, then the media started being against him. There's also Nebuchadnezzar, the son who did what his father did because the Jewish lost their faith in God who let be out of Egypt, so His Almighty sent them Nebuchadnezzar as a punishment. regards

@DeGigantischeSok exactly..... mystery babylon is a term used to describe the oppressive system put in place by a so called ruler. not any place in particular. but it does actually refer to the acient babylon system formed in mesopotamia. it is history where we learn from our mistake... but every country today is pretty much babylon... in jamaica we also refer to policemen as babylon as well. so pretty much the meaning today is, any oppressive figure..

Iraq is not considered to be a part of 'the West', whereas the US is its figurehead; so if anything I'd assume there would be more support for Iraqis on the issue of the war.

Brother we love everyone equally as all migthy God has commanded everyone to do, all we want to do is bring down the devil system which some people call babylon, it is nothing against anyone from there or who lives there. JAH bless, do not stop listening to reggae or studying rasta, it is great and full of truthful. @99IraqBaghdad99 I am from Ghana and I was a very serious rastafarian, we all have various understandings to the word, but truly the word Babylon has nothing to do with Iraq, it is generally sort of a spiritual term for hardship, hell, negative situation or bad influence, so don`t worry bro, peace and love.
@99IraqBaghdad99 the term "babylon" refers to the western system that opresses the poor and underpriveledged.the same system responsible for enslaving black people --- has nothing to with hating iraqis .the word is also used to refer to the police!
@99IraqBaghdad99 Naw mon Babylon is a frame or reference and a state of mind. Listen to Vampire and Cold Blood. Sorry for the misunderstanding. The vampire see gain in human blood and misery. I am sorry you had a vicious and tragic war foisted off on you by the Babylon

@99IraqBaghdad99 Hail brother, I'm Jamaican and I will say emphatically that we do not preach hatred for any nation. When we say Babylon, we are speaking of the system of oppression that was similar to the Babylonian system in the days of Nebucharezzar. Our national motto say out of many, one people. As Bob Marley's music as well as Peter Tosh's says its against the wicked people in society who take advantage of its masses. Sometimes the police in their operations are called Babylon too.
@99IraqBaghdad99 Again if you listen the lyrics you will hear of the system of Babylon defined as the ones that use a system of corruption and oppressions to keep down its masses, whether its in Jamaica, Iraq, Europe, UK. Wherever a system exist where the masses suffer under oppression that is what we call a Babylonian system. One Love.
@99IraqBaghdad99 no, we don't hate nobody! Babylon was before Iraq there, and also we mean a spiritual Babylon wich is the big City and some Islamist fight against that too ... Babylon is every white and black downpressor and slavemaster!

@99IraqBaghdad99 Sorry, i was a rastafarian, u know locks on my head, to me babylon is kind of any situation which is not pleasant, negative, bad, wrong, degrading....etc, it has nothing to do with the real Babylon. anyway thats me, or thats what `twelve tribes` teachers taught us the green rastafarians those days.peace and love.

From my understanding, "Babylon" is an umbrella term used to reference the West, or opressive forces (either social, political or economical).
It is not a direct reference to the former city in Mesopotamia.
