  • I ended up getting a ver nice 1964 Fisher ambassador yesterday for 40 bucks? It works and sounds great has a dual 1009 turntable in it. Can't bea fisher, they were the best

  • Hi. I just picked up a Fisher 400 (inside a grand wooden cabinet) from the house across the street that's giving everything away--old couple there had lived there for decades. Q: The lefthand speaker (when facing the stereo set) only comes through intermittently, very rarely. Not familiar at all with tube amps. Any idea on what's causing the problem? (The wires are securely attached to the tuner; I can't see what shape the connection to the speaker is w/o taking cabinet apart.) THanks.

  • @Canal138

    Hey there,

I have had an issue with that as well. There's nothing wrong with the actual amplifier though. It's probably just a bad/dying tube. No big deal. If you open it up and tap around on each individual tube while it being on (probably one of the 12AX7's) until you get substantial noise through one of the speakers. Since the sound in intermittent, I wouldnt suspect a tube to be burnt out, however, still check for tubes that don't glow at all.

  • The foam surrounds are toast on your pioneers and your going to mess up the voice coils

  • @Tylenole

    Haha I know,

I was using those temporarily as i waited for my pair of Polk Monitor 40's to arrive from Newegg..

  • very nice, how is the headphone jack wired in? ive wondered about this on tube amps- is it before the output transformers? due to headphones high resistance, or is it done another way?

  • @preludefan

I'm not sure if its before or after the transformers.. You can find the schematics if you Google them. I have a feeling that its after the transformers. It's a great sounding unit. I chose it because its a great sounding amp, and it is capable of receiving modern multiplexed FM stereo. It's also nice because it has a lot of inputs for a receiver of its time. It's probably the closest to modern device you could find from pre-1964.

  • hahahahaha! XD A Zune!!!!!!!! nice amp though

  • Old Fisher tube stereos are fine units (NY USA). I gotta 500c and a couple 400's that I picked up in the 90's around town and I replaced the tired parts (the selenium and caps) and wow, these units sing. whew!! enjoy while you can!

  • Thanks man! I plan to use it for many years to come, and as long as I can find tubes for it I will! :)

(By the way, tubedepot is great for finding the rare tubes..)

  • Do you know where the video is with some guy with a fisher like this that has a bad final tube glowing like nuclear reactor?

  • Hmm... No Clue.

  • Hope you like your new speakers! These old FISHER's sound very musical and 'high end' with quality speakers. There is a FISHER specialist in Staten Island, NY called 'The Fisher Doc' (you can Google that). His name is Al, and he restores and modifies these old classic units to where they sound like $5000 audiophile tubed amps!

  • Those classic tubed FISHER receivers are highly desirable and sought after in the audiophile community! Especially since most of them still have the highly musical (considered the best by some) German TELEFUNKEN tubes! Those cheap speakers you have far from do it justice. I have on old 500B which I covet. Anyone know if anyone works on these (tunes them up, etc.)??

  • Oh I know, those speakers I had in the video were crap, I was just waiting for the nice ones to come in the mail! :)

  • do you need to watch the voltage incoming to that? I read somewhere on the web that this should only get 110v and that 120v of todays volts are hard on it. If this is true is there some kind of voltage reducer to keep a steady 110? I have the same 400 here

  • Hmmm.... I don't know. I have heard that before, but I don't think it will hurt this particular unit. The back of my unit's chassis says 120 Volts, so yours should be fine as well.. I'm pretty sure that only goes for very old radios, possibly ca. 1920s like Atwater Kent.

If you really want to know though, look under my subscriptions for AllAmericanFiveRadio and ask him.

  • I so need to get my 800C going again!

  • They are such good products! I love Fisher....

  • Yeah they are great amps! It's funny that something so old can sometimes sound much better than old stuff.

  • fisher products are very good i have a ca 120 solid state 30 watt perchannel amp it powerful it sounds way more powerful than 30 watts
