Tips 1 & 4 are not helpful. They're simply unrealistic in this day & age. Tips 2 & 3 are helpful, and they are the most realistic ways to get upgraded for free.
make sure you are the last one to board and just take your seat in business class if one is still available... therefore it's also better to fly on tuesday or thursday.
On those 2 days airline tickets are cheaper and chances are there are less passengers on board.
Without some leverage you're never going to get upgraded these days. A broken seat or a bump may help you, but the days of dressing up and asking nicely or telling the flight attendant you're on your honeymoon are over. Every single domestic flight I've been on this year (I've flown over 100k miles this year) has gone out full in first class because very frequent fliers are upgraded for free.
