I remember seeing this Zenith on one of the home shopping channels in the 80s. The hosts of the show were impressed with the length wise cassette loading style and how it significantly saved space. The model they were demonstrating had six (yes six) heads.
I have four of these.. The non Hi-Fi models.. I haven't come across this model in a thrift shop yet.. I do have the JVC Hi-Fi version.. Even though the Zeniths are made by JVC. I think the Zeniths are better. The control layout is much better, and the Zeniths of these types are less problematic..
I found one like this yesterday at the thrift store......so glad to see someone on YouTube with one.....however, the thrift store here wanted $25 for theirs! ALL their VCRs were $25! Their DVD+VCR Combo unit was $50!! No way I would pay $25 for a VHS...no matter how unique it is.....
buddy you got a terrific deal ! three dollars for that ? a great old Zenith VCR ! in '87 I bought my first VCR and it too was Zenith (not like yours) had it about 10 years .
I came across one of these a few months back. I really wanted it but it was trashed. I later regreted not getting the model number so I could search ebay. A quick search of youtube and bam ...your video. Thanks for sharing.
Zenith also had 2 models of vertical VCRs on the market in 1987. I remember seeing them, and would love to come across one. They would have been built by JVC, which would later release some of their own vertical models.
Wow, what a sweet VCR! I never seen one that loads the tape lengthwise - if I were to see that VCR for the first time I would have thought it was a Beta unit lol.
Wow, I never saw a VCR that loads the tape vertically before. You scored big at GW for that. Most of their stuff they sell are crappy and overpriced. Looks like Hitachi made that for Zenith and I'm guessing it's from 1985.

The 2 vertical units also loaded the tape sideways like this one.

That is really unique. Never saw a VCR load like that one. Amazing find and it work perfect too.

That VCR is sweet. It is probably from around 1987 or so also due to the lack of on screen display.
During that time, Zenith used JVC as the OEM.

It's a JVC; Hitachi never made any VCRs for Zenith. The only companies to make Zenith decks were Sony (for Zenith Beta decks), JVC and GoldStar/LG.
In addition, JVC was the only company to make standalone VHS decks that loaded cassettes this way, including as rebranded OEM such as this Zenith.
A similar model that uses the same mechanical design includes the JVC HR-D470U.
