your videos are the best videos of Medival Total War!!! In other people's videos, I feel so DIZZY because they always move the camera a lot!!! Will you make a video of the Battle of Patay?
Its clear that you have put a lot of effort into this which i commend you for, but it's riddled with inaccuracies and a lot of what you included is made up - the primary sources only really mention the over-extended charge of the Varangian guard and the shock calvalry charge at the end of the battle.
Oh and the Varangian guard were mainly Anglo-Saxon at this point - exiles from the Norman conquest in England.
not to seem like an ameture or something, but who exactally were the normans?
i know about the duke william of normandy and the battle of hastings. i know all about that period in time, but i didn't think the normans existed in 1081?
@Lechit0202 The Normans were descendents of Vikings who colonized the north of France (the reason its now called "Normandy" - comes from "Northman"). They built a strong, belligerent kingdom, conquered England in 1066 and went on to conquests in Italy and the Mediterranean.
@MedievalConflicts Big difference between the two groups of Normans. William came from Northern Normandy and was of Royal blood. The Normans who settled in Italy were mercenaries and petty nobles from Southern Normandy. They went to Italy to help the Italians remove the Byzantines. They eventually ended up taking over Southern Italy and Sicily. These Normans were led by Robert Guiscard and his older brothers.
varangians were mainly Rus and swedes, alot anglo saxons did join but it was still mainly The Rus and the swedes used in the Varangian Guard and the anglo saxons were used more as mercenaries to back them up, like the vid says
"Over the years, new recruits from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway kept a predominantly Scandinavian cast to the organization until the late 11th century, so many Scandinavians left to enlist in the guard that a medieval Swedish law from Västergötland stated that no one could inherit while staying in "Greece"—the then Scandinavian term for the Byzantine Empire."
But yes the 11th century more and morte anglosaxons joined the guard.
"The Rus harry the Slavs, using ships to reach them; they carry them off as slaves and…sell them. They have no fields but simply live on what they get from the Slav's lands.... When a son is born, the father will go up to the newborn baby, sword in hand; throwing it down, he says, "I shall not leave you with any property: You have only what you can provide with this weapon."
@Nortrix87 In this time was mainly Anglo Saxon but probaly had other "germanic" people aswell. 100% sacandinavin? Well arent Varangians from Russia?XD
@ImperialGuard9001" According to the Kievan Rus' Primary Chronicle compiled in about 1113 AD, the Rus were a group of Varangians, Norsemen, who had relocated from Scandinavia, first to Northeastern Europe, then to the south where they created the medieval Kievan state"
Russia got its name from the Scandinavian Rus also used under names like Varangians/ varyars in the east.
Our names in western europe was Vikings and normans/norsemen.
The Varangian guard was mostly Scandinavian/Russian. They were first sent to the Byzantine Empire by Vladimir I of Kiev after the Byzantine Emperor asked for military assistance against the Bulgarian Horde.
@AegeanKing But in this time the varagian guard was mostly anglo saxon because of norman conquest many anglo-saxons especealy warriors left and find servince in Varagian Guard a irony of fate that many of them had same fate that in hastings and were massacred in this battle by other normans!
Bellissimo Video........complimenti.

@ImperialGuard9001 Did you know that Harald hardrada who died on standford bridge were leader of the varangian gaurd under the emperor?
He took many castles for they byzantine in sicely, recorded in the norse sagas in detail.
He sacked himself much gold in constantinopel when the emperor died as the right was for the guard and left claiming the throne of Norway.

I'll put it on my list but keep in mind these are very time consuming and difficult to create so it might be some time before I can pull that off.
