@MrAxemana correction. It wasn't Moffat's idea to change the Dalek design. It was a different scriptwriter. Plus, if you consider yourself to be a true Who fan, you would know many aspects of the show have changed in the past nearly 50 years, and so would know to accept any new changes with an optimistic, positive mind.

@chrisw1405 No they didn't. You're thinking of the ones in the Amicus films of the sixties, starring Peter Cushing, which aren't canonical to the TV show. They were made in a time when the BBC series was still being made in black and white and it was a great novelty to see the Daleks on the big screen in glorious technicolour, so they were made as primary coloured as possible. This wasn't a popular move with many fans as they're supposed to be scary! The new ones were inspired by those Daleks.

@David8693 Strictly, the Aaru films, a production subsidiary of Amicus. Daleks from the films were used in "The Chase," which I guess makes them canonical. Colour codes to indicate rank/role were hinted at with the black-domed leaders in the B&W era. Only cost stopped such codes being adopted broadly later. When a cheaper way of making Daleks was developed for "Remembrance," the idea was there'd be a far greater variety of colours for their next appearance; the cancellation stopped all that.
