Weaning is unnecessary. In the wild, foals stay in touch with their dams as long as they're in the herd, and wean gradually and naturally. It's not unusual for 2 year olds to take a drink from mom every now and then. Forced weaning is unnatural, stressful to both foal and dam, and totally unnecessary. If you believe in "natural" living as the model, then forced weaning runs contrary to nature's model. I say don't do it. Let horses be horses. They'll wean as they're intended to.
