okay this pass looks very good and obviously works very well professor Sperry, but when i try it i get double arm barred ( where they through both legs over your shoulders) what should i do?
@AssyrianMuscle for him to get an arm bar he would need to be able to move, marios position is solid, as is the guy on the floor. very dificutl to move, other than just move you legs or regulate your guard a little
I think that it doesnt matter the pass you do, but yes how well you do it and incorporate it to your game. Zé Mario was a great fighter, and for him standing pass was white belt stuff. Roger gracie is considered one of the best black belts ever to step on a mat, and his main guard pass is standing. If you do it well, then it is the best guard pass in the world. There ain't no shitty pass, but yes a shitty passer.
at my club, the first closed guard pass we learn is standing up. Grab one of his arm and stand up while you hold his "gi hand" and then push down on the other knee with your free hand. works like a charm.
But he is right about getting sweeped.. Can be very dangerous
They pass open guards standing up. He sais that you will get sweeped if you get up while in a closed guard that's why he doesn't pass it stainding up.
Nice video, never seen this technique yet. Our teacher always tell us to get up in the guard, but I'm not very good yet so I get swept a lot. Ima try this one next class :D !
Love this pass. Standing up is such a waste of energy especially if your opponent weighs fifty million lbs. Is there an answer to the "is it legal" question?
@deboluccia I don't know about competition but our instructor teaches us that if it's part of the gi, it's fair game. I've even seen instances of people's belt going undone and their opponent using it for a choke. Yes, if you do that the person you choked will be pissed, but they'll learn to secure their belt properly quick enough :P
@tipsetd ignore the issue if you wish. valid point. im not saying carry a gun. im not saying kill anyone. infact just the opposite. you say you would learn MA to defend yourself. i agree..its something that you have with you at all times. my point was sport arts don't teach you self defense scenarios/preparation for the real world. sure alot of it will cross over, but sport is sport. in some ways its better than alot of the SD out there, in other ways it's not.
Is this pass legal in competition under IBJJF rules? It is currently listed as a foul if D-) When the athlete inserts his fingers inside the sleeves or pants, or with both his hands on his opponents belt.
mario sperry, a former world champion, gives his best technique for passing the guard and it only gets 4/5 stars... wow. fair enough if you dont like the way he explains the technique, but you can't flaw the way he does his pass.
This is not a street, this is bjj. maybe you in aslam in a streetfight. i go straid for his eyes an ball, gogo punch in to his groin, fingers pick in eyes. maybe pick on ear of his head. This is a verry nice techniek to pass the guard.
You could pull guard and try to hold his posture down. But remember in a street fight, unlike sport BJJ, he has the option of picking you up and slamming you on your head when you attempt your submission ala Arona vs. Rampage. IMO - In a street fight, I'd look to gain top position, get mount, rain the punches down. Then break and arm or shoulder.
Ha, let your inexperienced attacker try and slam you, the minute he tries to stand against anyone with a little bjj training he's getting swept by grabbing the ankles and kicking him down.
IMO going to the ground intentionally isn't the smartest thing. it can happen but i wouldnt personally do it on purpose, too risky because you dont know if he has a weapon, on gravel or concrete, between two cars, or if he has 2 buddies to kick you while you're down. just my opinion
THanks for the vid I am going to try the pass in trainning tomorrow.....today a kid arm-bared me for not being used to the closed guard.....I will tell you guys about the outcome......god bless
Thank you, Dezp. If someone is robbing you and they pull a guard. Elbow them in the groin over and over and over until the guard opens and then stand up. There, self defense against a guard.
I don't like this at all. Sure it works for competition. But it doesn't train for solid self defense. For it to work you have to keep your arms stiff. This opens you up for pokes in the eyes. To defend them you need to let go of the belt. Then you're back to square one. This move is purely a sport move.
When are you breaking the guard as a means of self-defense? Also when is your enemy in a self-defense situation wearing a jiu-jitsu belt.Pokes in the eyes? You must be a TMA guy...
No, I'm not TMA at all. I'm a purple belt in BJJ under Pedro Sauer. I just perfer methods of opening that keep proper posture. I'm not saying the guys isn't good. Actually, Mario recently tapped me out in about 4 seconds. He's phenominal. As far as belts...many people wear belts, just not jiujitsu belts.
this is a Sports jiu jitsu series. Therefore, strangely enough, it focuses on how to pass a guard in competition. Pokes in the eye? i doubt you would be attacked by a guy who pulls guard on you at all...if it happends as a coincident, you wouldn't need an advanced pass at all. Striking from the top would be my solution.
I agree that few people are going to "attack" you by pulling guard. But it is likely that if you take them down they might try to wrap you up in it. Especially with the emergence and popularity of MMA. I agree that a strike is a better course of action. The pass doesn't have to be complicated...just not so stupid that you give up your posture and put your head in the guy's hands. Jiujitsu isn't a sport.
Jiu Jitsu is definately a sport. It depends on where you train. Where i train we focus on competition and I do bjj ONLY for the competition. I don't like walking around preparing myself for being attacked. Just like some people do football or basketball, I do bjj. This DVD is called "Sport Jiu Jitsu", therefore it gives solutions for what to do in a Competitive setting, not selfdefense.
doing martial arts for self defense is the most stupid thing ever, if its real self defense, get a baseball bat or a gun.
Martial arts are good for one thing, and that would be some "friendly" fight at the bar or something, and I doubt anybody will try to break your neck or poke your eyes there.
So my opinion - real self defense - get a gun.
- a brawl ( which somepeople call self defense, which it isnt ) - train mma, or atleast bjj.
A gun is certianly effective. But that's not always available. In the military you learn to layer your defenses. Assult weapon, sidearm, knife/bayonet, blunt instrument, finally hands. Not everyone has the option to just shoot everyone. Certainly, martial arts can't get you out of every situation. If someone wants to kill you...they probably will. But that doesn't make it stupid to practice. afterall, maybe the guy trying to kill you isn't that good at it.
point was that if you want self defense, martial arts are not the best for this.Theyr good coz their fun and if you wanna have a brawl in the bar, thats the reason I dont like martial arts teaching strikes to throat.bjj is good for fun, sport, not life or death fighting and for controlling your self and your power. If you need self defense from some guys robbing you on the street, mma wont help. If you want to learn to beat people up when they offend you or a friend of yours(in a bar),mma is good
I believe that you should have some type of training in your life time because you will never know if it will come in handy. Its better to add something to your arsenal rather than not having anything at all. At times the individual who is trying to mug you will not be armed, sometimes you will come across people who assault you in groups with there bare fist and to be honest I rather know how to take someone down and then go to the next opponent rather than get beat up to a bloody pulp.
lol I doubt my attacker will get closer to me faster than I take out my gun xDD oh yeah, when I see someone potentially dangerous going towards me , Ill just keep walking and let him come to me xDD. Ill start walking faster, he still goes after me, I run, I get a hold of my gun, dont take it out, and if he still keeps following me, I take it out.
Maybe I wouldnt use a gun, if he would surprise me and would all of a sudden teleport infront of me :DD, but aslong as theres a distance...gun>all.
well carrying a gun is illegal in most places lol ..what if you DON'T see them coming? which is likely in my experience. guns are also a good way to go to prison
Its illegal if your not a legal gun owner. What if you dont see them coming? Then you hear them... Why would you not notice someone following you? What is stopping you from running away?
Unless youre deaf, blind, or stupid, its pretty hard for the robber to come to you close to you, without you noticing him. On the other hand he could be an invisible ninja!
And concerning prison,if you act right, any lawyer will get you out of this. You really dont know what your talking about concerning this.
and if you're in a crowded bar or some place with alot of noise? 9 times out of 10 in my experience you won't see them coming. i've seen it too many times. predators and criminals can be quite clever. most people dont spend their time listening for footsteps behind them or looking over their shoulder.
Saying guns are a good way to go to prison is the same as saying that choking someone out is a good way of going to prison.
Theres a lot of myths about self defence and prison, that choking someone out is concidered strangling and that it can kill people, thus its better to strike etc bullshit.
If you have common sense ( shoot a robber only as your last choice without giving him your money, after trying to run away, talk out of it) then you are in no danger...
and how many people have been sued or arrested for injuring some jackass who broke into their house? anyway my original point was, do you walk around carrying a baseball bat? not likely. and most people are not legal to carry a gun, especially concealed. my martial arts training has saved my butt more than once.
of course it also depends on what martial art you study as well. i surely wouldn't pull guard on the street for example. but im not paranoid enough to carry a gun or ball bat with me at all times either.
True, but getting profficient at fighting is harder and takes longer, than making yourself a legal gun owner.
To me its a waste, I dont think Ill even have to actually fight someone in self defense, Im pretty sure that I would be able to run away.
I do bjj and wrestling for fun, competition, and confidence, and the fact that if someone tryes intimidates me and pushes me, Im willing to fight -"a friendly brawl".
But not for self defence, against guns etc - a potentially fatal situation for me.
that's a rather big assumption IMO. of course as i said it depends on what arts you study. bjj and wrestling aren't exactly known for their weapons defenses, and they dont even touch on the subject of multiple attackers, which ill admit are 'iffy' at best. i've been in situation where i couldn't run anywhere before.
but having a gun, and carrying a gun on you are two different things. anyone can own one, but not many people are legal to carry it on their person in public.
Fair enough. You do make a good point that it does specifically call it "Sport Jiu Jitsu." I will say though, I dont' really walk around "preparing" for people to attack me. It was something that came with the hazards of being in the military. I guess that's just the first place my mind goes to. But that's my fault...not yours of course.
this only works good in gi when you have longer and strong arms because it is easy for the person to get his hips up and get their feet on the hips when you dont have the belt
