@bugz000 Once the correct operating RPM is reached the govener opens the exhaust valve to allow it to "freewheel" using the energy of the spinning flywheel. Then as RPM's drop the govener kicks the exhaust valve back into action. Also notice the intake valve only opens because of the suction created.
Pretty sure these had small 'oilers' on each bearing small tubes-cups, seen them before, now and again you went around topping them up & bearings were fed by gravity-capillary-drip feed.
how many hp does it have also i feel that hit and miss will still be around in another 50 years they last much longer than modern engines even though most rc gas air plane engines have more power lol lol lol really cool man if u realy did build it
@gaspowerrules just because they are rated 1.5 hp and other seemingly low ratings for suck big engines they are 100% torque an Rc airplane engine puts out almost no torque, these are way more powerful than what you could ever imagine, a 24hp v-twin lawn mower has to run at 3600 rpm just to put out 1/4 the amount of power these put out at 500 rpm.
It makes so much racket, that you guess "hit" cycle only by blow-by :-) Exhaust is quieter than other parts. Worn beyond death and resurrected and working again and forever...
It seems these old hit and miss motors would run given any excuse. With you building this one from scavenged parts it illistrates the value these motors had for years on the farms. In those days it was an ordeal to go to town for parts, thus a good machine would work regardless of it's condition and fuel. Good work!
get it running and post if!!

I have one my dAD HAD SINCE 1932 THE SPARK PLUG RUSTED OFF IN IT if i could just get it out my dad told me it runs just fine.
WiIdbiII 3 months ago
@WiIdbiII drill it out and rethread it if necessary for a larger spark plug

how do you lubricate these things if theres no crankcase to put oil in
mrmkc2 7 months ago
@mrmkc2 they have oilers, you can see one above the back of the cylinder yhat would oil the bearings

can this run on kerosene?
outdoorsman310 8 months ago
Way that the piston moves in viewable is pretty nasty looking ^.^

They do not make motors like this anymore be cause it would run 4ever and an average joe could work on it!

This is like music to my ears. Love those old engines. Masterpieces of simplicity, reliablity, and fixablity.

@farmboy460 well, if you made a desil lawn mower with a 350 pound flywheel, i betcha it would cut some grass lol
Rabbit12100 1 year ago
@Rabbit12100 Yes yes it would sadly they dont make lawnmowers that way.

chuck a set of rings in it and it should go for another 50 years. :) a small bit of blopast happening there,

Man i would love to have this engine but in only 14

You can get enclosed crank engines of the same era cheap. I'm ony 15 but have a few old engines now.
Great hobby!

nice engine, just shows how reliable they are
but could probably do with some new rings

Nice engine! I love the hit and miss sound :)
Bidone1967 2 years ago 2
does it have a governor?
SthealthRaider 2 years ago
No. The only governing system is the hit-and-miss setup. Look for an instructional video of google it to find out how the system works.

A VERY american engine!
