  • This is real music at its finest. To bad his concerts draw mindless conformists who do nothing but get messed up and act stupid. They have no concept of love. BUt luckily DM is cool with sharing his music with those that do not want to expose themselves to such ignorance.

  • dmb crowds are always riddled with hot girls

  • oh my god this is so f**king beautiful!

  • Leeroy! RIP

  • gotta agree dylan1728 i so agree :)

  • 7:30 NICE TITTIES...amazing song also....but damn ,did you see them titties?

  • My favorite Dave song. It's so sick when Carter and and Moore come in in the beginning

  • SLABE

  • this is one of my fav. DMB tunes they have ever written and is right up there with Two Step as far as great ones in their catalog go. The lyrics are just beautiful and they go from this dark verse to lighter chorus thing that they kill.

  • Brilliant song, musically and lyrically...great stuff.

  • The Stone Live at the Big Apple 2010, my god is it not amazing!

  • @sheldini2002

that is such a gorgeous version of this tune.. and to open a show with it i would have been blown away

  • at 6:50 you can see Dave giving everyone the queue. Talk about some magical improvisational skills.

  • Those must be magic carpets they're standing on..they're amazing

  • This song brings to me every single emotions a human can feel

    Best song.

  • Number one on ants!!

  • Unholy...

  • Good song. Nice tits on the butter face

  • @BoldMoldOfGold Why do find it necessary to insult someone you don't know? It's simply mean. Dave would say thay you're a moron for talking about a fellow human being that way.

  • My god. Stepping up to the microphone with your guitar knowing that behind you are Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, Leroi Moore, Steffan Lessard and Butch Taylor to put the power behind your simple chords must be the BEST feeling in the world :D

  • @brandonbush1 simple chords?!?! go get your eyes checked and come back and watch dave closely throughout the song, then tell me what you think

  • @cant3flip : Haha, ok well I'll be the first to admit that in relative terms Dave's style of guitar isn't generally with the simplest chords. But I play just about every DMB song on guitar with this one easily being my favorite (I'm sure my friends are sick of me playing it around them), and I can assure you that this is really one of the simpl*er* ones in terms of chords.

  • @brandonbush1 can you sing like that while you play?

  • @cant3flip Yes, music is a huge passion of mine so when I said I "play" just about every song, I mean I play AND sing just about every DMB song. Do you play? If so, you should try learning this one. It's incredibly fun, it's really not as hard as you might think (there are just 3 sections that repeat), and if you watch his solo performance of the song on the Charlie Rose show, it's easy enough to figure out the chords.

  • head over hills for his man!!!!

  • it is great song!

  • It's like he can see into my soul...

  • Those last "couple" of seconds are the best of the video :)

  • Love this song. I'd appreciate it if you allowed my video response of a bass cover version. Thanks. :]

  • steely dan

  • 0:00-7:32

  • I wish LeRoi did all the sax cues live that he did on the studio albums.

  • creeeeeeeeeeeeping suspicion that things here are not as theyyyy seem

  • i fucked chicks in college to this shit

  • @kiloelo haha nice!

  • My favorite recording of this song. Dave sounds really good here. I do like the live recorder I heard where the audience started singing "Fools Rush In" to the beat of this song.

  • this song is so sick, especially live, dmb = awesome!

  • huge fan favorite song!!!

  • uh i duuno bou the rest of u but best part was the ending when they showed the lady with the bobbling tittys!!!! lol hahahahah ....and obviouly dmb rocks too!!

  • I am so thankful to have DMB im my life.

  • Such GOD giving talent!!

  • @jaylovsgod I think Dave would even disagree with the God given part.

  • I dont think so since I have actually have talked to him about it REALLY !! Traveled with him for two years!!

  • @jaylovsgod and that was how many years ago?

  • stefan looks so young! guy is a beast

  • This song and Two Step on this video are my fave

  • ffs he cant be human.

  • so raw!

  • such an amazing band.........so pure ....amazing song writing.......played with emotion and a love of the audiences appreciation...in my opinion....DMB the mecca of music.......rip leroi....

  • Merci DMB!!

  • greatest dave song in my opinion.. so dark and so good

  • @dylan1728 very true amazing song but i dont know how you can pick just one theyre all so damn good!!

  • @dylan1728 It's definitely one of my favorites. VERY dark and VERY good. This is one great performance.

  • i've never seen an artist live that i enjoy more than dave. he's better live than in the studio!

  • Quite possibly the best lyrics ever written! Def one of the best songs from the best band ever!!

  • absolutely amazing. he is incredible.

  • The Stone is musical genius, cannot wait for Tampa 8-12-09, Bring it Dave.....THIS BAND IS MY MENTAL RELEASE!

  • We love you Leroi!

  • Easy there Stefan... haha

    1:50- 154

  • he's an awesome bassist !! :)

  • "if not i will go alone" indeed

  • Carter throws away the stick because he needs to end the song with a new pair of sticks. he did that many times.

  • ALL drummers do that. :)

  • sounds like irony :)

  • perfection

  • absolutely beautiful as always; i adore this band!

  • One of the sweetest endings to a song ever!

  • First song I ever heard DMB play live.

Theres no now way to explain the rumble frm leRoi's Bari.

  • He'll be missed.

  • he'll never be forgotten, god i love and miss that horn so much :(

will always be thinking of u my friend :)

  • I'll never forget the first time I heard this song! The bari sax enchanted me from the hallway. I walked into a high school gym heard the vocals and knew it was DMB. I was hooked for good that night! Miss you LeRoi!

  • it's interesting how the live "jamband" version covers the solo acoustic sound of the song. It loses quite a bit of the remorseful sounding harmonies. i definitely like the acoustic version, but it's also great live, two very different ways of expressing the song. go dave!

  • This song is so serious, dark, and eerie, I love this song! That riff is so intricate and difficult, especially while singing, dave is really talented

  • 0:00 - 7:09 is the best part of this song. They are fucking amazing.

  • I remember hearing a live performance of this song that had the audience singing "Fools Rush In". It was awesome. I just can't remember which concert it was.

  • Complete Weekend On The Rocks, disc 1, track 6. It's damn tight. :)

  • this is musical nirvana

  • Dave Matthews Band is just so loud instrumentally in every song, that is what keeps me coming back listening to this band

  • carter breaks his stick at 6:59 doesn't even miss a beat

  • I think it just flew away. good observation :)

  • ha yeah. you can see it laying on the edge of the stage in the shot at 7:01

  • best band eva!

  • What show was this?

  • it was in New Jersey...its the Listener Supported DVD...and its a great show...if you dont have it...run down to a Best Buy or something and get it...its definantly worth owning...

  • my favorite DMB song of all time.<3

  • I feel like an idiot asking this....but who is Julia Grey?

  • an old Girl Friend. he asked her to marry him more than once...she said no. Halloween is about her..so is Grey Street..or so I've read.

  • Grey Streets not, but I'll back you up is.

The best was I'll Back You Up & Halloween in one of their earlier shows, 94-95 I think... She must have been on his mind haha

  • I wonder how she reacted to those songs about her... especially Halloween... o_O;

  • they should have a concert where they play i'll back you up, halloween and than the stone to end it

  • what inspiration

  • RIP Leroi Moore

  • They opened the show on 7-1-08 with this! Was on the front row!

  • ur so lucky

  • ow mush did you pay for the seat? about $3,000?

  • lol i was there right in the back, but none the less it rocked it was amazing

  • i love the violin rift

  • According to Antsmarching, the three Julia Grey songs are I'll Back You Up, Lover Lay Down, and Halloween.

  • you are correct my mistake

  • i love this song, the ending makes me sad in a happy way, if that makes sense

  • greatest concert ever!

  • my favorite song to cover /w acoustic guitar and singing. one of the few i can actually sing well by him ... despite the guitar difficulty (which thankfully i got well before the vocals). LOVE IT! though the solo version is loved by me ... the band adds such a great dynamic!

  • whoa...this could be the recording from the listener supported album!! my all time favorite!

  • That it is. This is the video footage of the concert for the Listener Supported disc

  • If Dave plays this song at Rothbury I'd spend the rest of my life humming it with a smile. My absolute favorite song.

  • lol. i love the way how they've lain thick rugs down on the floor beneath Dave's feet.

  • they always do that, and not just for Dave lol

  • This song is in the perspective of Dave's sisters husband that murdered her....some sentimental shit

  • i was jus wondering if you'd come along hold my head when my head won't hold on i'll do the same if the same is what you want if not i'll go that sounds like marriage bout preposing to someone not murder or death

  • this song is one of the three dave wrote when he asked julia gray to marry him and she said no three times. not about murder or death at all. listen to the lyrics please i beg of you

  • i thought the three songs were halloween, grey street, and i'll back you up?

  • no dave has said many times that the song is not a reference to Julia Gray

  • i meant grey street as the song

  • It's really hard for me when i try to explain what this songs makes me feel, it fills me in a way any other song does!! everytime a hear it i get all sentimental, but in a good way

  • this must be such a hard song to play with a band.... to get everything timed right

  • simply amazing. great performance of my favorite song

  • Boyd is better than their studio version!!!!!! The solo still gives me goosebumps......

  • One of the many things about this band that continues to amaze me is they are one of the rare groups that sound better/cleaner live than in the studio.

  • exactly, the best things are like them, they get better over time, wine women and song ;-)

its strange that they dont play at things like superbowl halftime or grammy's, if only people knew..

    thanks for posting.

  • dang he can play the maddest riffs and still sing beautifully. not too many other people can do that...

  • Mmm i always get my shag on when this song is playing .. Cheers to you dmb !

  • gah DMB makes the kinda music that has so much emotion...it gives you chills...ya feel so much from their music

  • What's wierd is that this song (amongst the many that they have that I love) inspired me so that I wrote a book off of it! If you really listen to it,., it tells an amazing story in and of itself....Not to mention Dave's a total cutie!

  • Is it published?

  • best song ever

  • you can tell they love it (6:04)

  • beuford was a BIG BIG boy back then

my favorite shot of him his on this DVD when hes blowing the gum at the end, big ole smile on his face

  • they totally messed up his cool base part

    listen at 1:50

    owell

    they are still the best

  • actually thats not like that in the dvd....it must have been after peasefawg recorded it

  • yep, you can see the frames skip at that point...

  • nice...

  • i have the dvd. its the best ive seen

    they are all gods

  • Impossible to miss! Can you upload more songs from the DVD, please!

I have the CD, but it's priceless to actually see the reaction of the audience on his performances.

  • This is the version that is on the Listener Supported album, isn't it?

  • You know your DMB..this is from Listener Supported DVD.

  • Look at his fingering on this song!!!! That is sheer awesome-ness!!!!

  • this has got to be one of the best Dave Matthews songs, if not the very best.

  • Agreed. Love the opening lyrics.

  • Too Bad this was in michigan....

  • Actually, this was recorded on 9/11/99 at Continental Airlines Arena in NJ.

  • Ditto

  • I hope he plays this when i see him both nights in NJ. Aug 7th and 8th.
