It was more than that. The deep roots of rivalry and nationalism in all of europe caused alot of it too. The Cold war wasnt the first arms race, the turn of the century back then usered in repeating rifles, flamethrowers, dreadnoughts, gas, and most certainly machine guns. You are right though. But my thoughts are, that why did we blame Germany for WW1? we could have avoided two world wars if that arms race and nationalism was stopped.

blame is generally put on germany (and not others) for three reasons (imo):

1. they offered a blank cheque to austria, who in turn subdued the serbs after the assassination of the archduke (in the face of possible russian intervention),

2. germanys schlieffen plan was initially thought of in 1905 - 9 years before the war. No other country made strategic preparations for war from such a time.

3. germany initiated the war by executing the schlieffen plan (ie. were the first to act)

This is definitely real. My grandfather was a band director for the US Army then and not too many of them made it back. He was an ambulance driver and saved a few lives. No telling what he saw...Dad was in the US army in WWII and neither one of them would talk about it. I served during Viet Nam and I don't want to talk about what I saw either.

The staged film is easy to spot, if the photographer is in front of the men shooting; then it was staged. Most of the films showed life in the trenches, poking their camera over the top of a trench was a good way for the photographer to get shot!
