@yvoe9 It has been proven that privatization actually makes things worse. Look at what happened to the Melbourne tram system when it was privatized, or better yet, Vancouver, where some areas don't even have basic bus service due to the "for profit" nature of privatized transit systems.
@RussianPalikhov well not all the time, look at the Tokyo subway system, its owned by 2 private company s, and things have been going great. I guess the thing is if the ttc does get privatized, the city will hate them and stop them from doing anything. Not in all cases does privatizing hurt the city. Look at how badly the ttc has been going now, there no hurt in trying at this point.
@yvoe9 You have to realize that the big reason the TTC is doing bad is because of one thing, the removal of the provincial subsidy by Mike Harris. Ever since then, the TTC has been having non-stop financial problems and that is where the decay started. The moment Queens Park returns to providing its' share of funding for the operation of the TTC, it is a guarantee that the service will drastically improve.
What's world class about using Diesel trains. South Africa is just launching it's new electric rail links built by....drum roll please...Bombardier. Mr. Collins and Metrolinx instead decided it was better to go to Japan and by diesel trains. Really?
The current transit in Toronto is as good as it's going to get. Despite how crap our system is now, it's the best Canada has to offer.
10 years ago, the Paul Martin government announced this Pearson rail link - with tons of promotion and fanfare. Various $1M reports written, and we still have nothing. Now Metrolinx is busy writing new reports.
In 25 years will have nothing but a taller pile of reports. Metrolinx is another government agency that spends millings in busy work and self promotion.
hong kong is the public transit example of what to be for the world. canada is the example of what NOT to be. for less than the price it costs to travel from montreal to toronto by train I could fly from barcelona to athens in europe. and do it in 1/4 of the time.
Only 25+ years too late! Toronto is the only city I've ever lived in that doesn't have public transit to the airport (which happens to be 40KM from downtown!). You've had enough chances Toronto. Why do you think everyone in your city is depressed money-chasing lowlifes? It's because you don't care about infrastructure!
That Jack Collins guy would look amazing with a mustache.
