trying to run away from a tornado with a whole entire train behind you isnt that good of an idea, haha just kidding, im sure that was their only way, probably the most shocking part was seeing a sparking tank car come bouncing at you, cool vid, glad the locomotive stayed on track!
And then train management came along and told the engineer and conductor they were being unsafe, thus berating them, calling them names, blaming the natural disaster on them while wondering how to save their safety record and year end bonus.
@xTheuglytruthx As a railroad employee, I can tell you this is real. Most newer locomotives have cameras mounted in the nose of the cab. The cars on the head end of the train were empty and light. No match for a tornado.
@parabellum12ful oh yes it was a tornado. watch the trees in background as rain gets heavier....trees bend and fall behind train. can see side of tornado at the end to the right of railcars as they derail.
Holy crap!!! That was amazing!!! I mean bad for the driver but wow. That surprised me. At frist it was just train goin along the tracks then BAM!!! Train knocked over.:(
Looks more like a derailment then a tornado since the trees arent going all crazy. If a tornado can push a 700+ ton train then im sure it can do it to trees too...
i know really nuthing about how to conduct a train but if i was the engineer on that train i wouldnt stop for about 200 yards more, i.e. giant speeding white tankers
Wavehopper. He was not still coupled to the hoppers for they fell off to the side HELLO! The GCOR said the engineer is supposed to bail the independent any time a UDE occurs to prevent such a run in. Go back to your camera and model train and leave the comments to those of us who do this stuff for a living.
@wyattsdad81 No need to be hostile! I have read the actual FRA accident report which U.P. filed and do you realize that one of his 4 units (UP9142) was actually derailed. I am a mainline freight engineer for a Class 1 R.R. & have been since '87 and a RTE since '78. You should never ass/u/me! I always bail on UDE's and that is what I stated in my first comment: "Bailing the independent would of definitely helped..." And I NEVER stated that he was still coupled to the hopper(s).
@wyattsdad81 By assuming that 'wavehopper100' was just a 'foamer' you just made the biggest mistake that a railroader can make: You ass/u/me'd! And as RTE's we both know what can happen when you do that! In fact, we just saw it - with you! Be safe!
@wyattsdad81 HELLO YOURSELF!! Wavehopper is a professional railroader. Knows how to do his job. In talking with individuals involved in investigating this accidentI (I work for UP) the covered hoppers behind the locomotive remained coupled onto the power until the run in occured. The rear unit derailed. The crew on this consist handled the train professionally and correctly.
@wyattsdad81 Bailing the independent would of definitely helped provided he wasn't still coupled to the grain hopper. We also have to keep in mind that this was a 4 unit consist. The train crew were in the lead locomotive, facing the opposite direction and probably couldn't even see what was occurring behind them..
"TORNADO THEN MOVED ACROSS THE CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD WHERE IT BLEW 12 RAILROAD FREIGHT CARS OFF THE TRACK. THE TRAIN WAS MOVING AT THE TIME THE TORNADO HIT IT...SO AS THE MAIN ENGINE STOPPED...THE REMAINING CARS ON THE TRACK CONTINUED ALONG IT AND SLAMMED INTO THE FRONT PART OF THE TRAIN. THIS CAUSED A FEW MORE CARS TO DERAIL...INCLUDING ONE CONTAINING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS THAT CAUSED THE EVACUATION OF THE TOWN OF LAWRENCE."
I think it was really an empty freight and not only that but it didn't seem to long. And just to clarify, I think a train would take less than 2 miles to stop if it freaking derailing! It's called friction, how can a train roll on its side? Some of you all have zero common sense.
wow, the engineer must have been fired for not stopping the train to let the tornado pass by. wasn't there a red signal somewhere near where the tornado was coming to stop the train?
@SuperSelly93 I can assure you that no one on this train crew - conductor, engineer & possibly brakeman - were fired! This was a 'freak tornado' (January in Northern Illinois!), that developed very quickly & caught most everyone unprepared.
Track signal systems are NOT capable of detecting tornado activity. UP has orders that all trains must be stopped & train crews are to seek shelter whenever tornado activity has been observed. But this one happened too quickly for that to occur.
@wavehopper100 Ah ok. i thought in the midwest, with the amount of tornadoes that occur in some areas, I thought there would be some type of special signal system that when a tornado is heading toward train tracks, all signals in that area would switch to red to stop approaching trains and tell them to wait until the coast is clear.

In most cases, when a tornado warning has been issued for an area, the train dispatcher will contact all train crews via radio communication to advise them of the warning.
@SuperSelly93 The first summer - '87 - that CTC was installed on our sub. we kind of had a system like you mentioned. Everytime there was a thunderstorm in the area, all the signals for miles around would go either to a full 'stop' or a 'restricted' indication. But, it wasn't a design feature of the system - just a malfunction. Heck, if a squirrel peed on the rail, all the signals would turn red! lol They eventually called in an 'expert' who managed to figure it out!
