Someone should have forced Miller & the designers of this so called, state of the art, interior design, to ride in rush hour traffic to see just how dysfunctional this design really is without center poles, for those that are vertically challenged. Or the sporadic placing of the upper grab bars. Make Miller hang on to them for 1/2 or longer and see how he feels. Way to stupid for words.
WTF, cloth seats? TTC is not known for its maintenance/hygiene.
Its too bad they have to spend so much money without even testing the trains first. I mean, you buy a whole bunch up front, and what if they turn out to be really crappy and need to be modified to be more practical? They should be running one or two on each line and see what the feedback is so they can tell Bombardier if something needs to be altered or more of the same can be made. I personally never had a problem with not being able to move from one car to the next. Who cares?
It's just like those damn McGuinty windmills. They don't bother to see reports of the health harm they are causing in other countries. He just runs amuck installing them. Same thing here.
As you said, no test run with actual real people during rush hour.
I guarantee, down the road, they will have to install the enter poles, just wait and see.
@vistarox **Yes, as they always do already, but now with the center middle pole gone, that whole area
in front of the seats is a total waste space. Why, bcos not everyone is comfortable standing with their arm in the air for 1/2 hr or more. The arm goes numb!!! Sorry, but like I said, the entire subway should not have to be made wheelchair friendly. Only a certain portion of it and it would be clearly marked on the platform as to which is the handicap friendly car.
@vistarox It's a problem now with the current T1 trains. If you're short and you're not tall enough to reach those upper handles, you're screwed. It doesn't make sense to leave them out. In a busy train, a person in a wheelchair will not be able to move around much anyway, so the poles aren't impeding their movement.
Actually there is a TON of testing going on and the drivers, maintainers, instructors, ACAT... have been participating in the development of the train since the beginning. There has been a lot of feedback and improvements along the way and all problems are addressed by Bombardier, even after the cars go into service. The first train was running at the Kingston test facility for a full year before any were shipped to Toronto to begin testing there.
Where does the guy who controls the opening and closing of the door do his thing? Does he have his own compartment, or does he have to sit with everyone? :)
@vistarox That's not good. I hope the driver has views of all of the doors. The 'whistle man's' job was not just to close the doors, but to look and see that nobody was stuck. Now the driver's all alone? Not good.
There are 2 cab cars, one at each end of the train. The driver goes in this leading train and the guard (who controls the doors) goes in the trailing cab. Each one has their own "compartment" but now they are at the ends of the train - no more middle spot.
Oh, I get it, no center poles to accommodate the once in a while wheel chair rider.
So, why not just designate one car for wheel chair access? Like the car closest to the wheel chair ramp. They could mark it on the floor so every one can see.
It just does not make sense to make everyone suffer all the time, for the once in a while user.
Those overhead grab bars are just way to high and center poles are a must in rush hour traffic. hmmm? I guess the creators never rode in rush hour b4.
@OMGaNEWBIE I didn't think of that when I first saw the design, but you are right, lack of center poles is actually bad for short people. They spent so much energy worrying about people in wheelchairs that they forgot about the vertically challenged who also ride the subway. It doesn't make sense, unless their plan was to have people in wheelchairs running up and down the length of the entire train. In reality, they will not move very far especially during rush hour (if they can get on).
R the seats fabric or vinyl? Why, bcos ppl have been known to expel bodily fluids on them or drinks. The permanent stains are disgusting.
Is it me, or are there less seats?
Standing room only with no center polls only ceiling hand grabs? Imagine keeping your hand in the air for 1/2 hr, while the other hand tries to hang on to bags. hmmm?
Or what if short ppl or seniors get swept up in the mad rush hours sardine sandwich and they are stuck in the middle with no pole to grab onto? hmm?
These new subway cars are great. But those red handle bars are damn ugly. We are so accustomed to the old subway trains so we will be biased. People usually hate change. In the long run, I think these trains will be a hit. Now they just need to finish that god damn Sheppard Subway line...
@kiarashsafavi It's mostly just specific regions in Toronto that is strictily more monogamous with the population's ethnicity. Even in those neighbourhoods/regions, there are sprinklings of other ethnic races. I wouldn't say that Chinese people are taking over everything in Toronto.
Besides being new and the fact that u can move from one car to the next, this is no different than the same cars toronto currently has. Infact, the new ones are worst without the poles in the middle for ppl to hold onto while standing. Not to mention the ugly seats. Hong Kong also has more seats but this has fewer. TTC still remains in the 19th century. It was also a waste of money as some of the older trains can be refurbished to make them new again.
@chrish767 yes they look shittier...they put in new digital maps so they think they're ALL that...toronto sux...we will never get olympics with garbage transportation
I dont think Toronto suxs but the transportation system is on life support. I'm fine with new trains but make the money count. Do something different, not recreate the same shit just with digital maps and moving car to car. I've always thought the olympics should go to emerging regions like brazil, russia, india, china, south africa, mexico in order to encourage them to invest in infrastructure, something toronto nvr well in the 60s. Not the west.
@chrish767 Yeah your right about that. When the last batch of T1s were being delivered in 2002, the Just decided to scrap the H2s just to make more room. talk about a waste of money right there. And i do like having the center bars for shorter people, or people that don't have nothing to hold on. When the train is full
Many cities around the world including Hong Kong refurbish their metro cars instead of scrapping them in order to save money. Seoul metro also has no center bars but the hand railings above are shorter for ppl to grab onto. Those TTC railings look higher than ever before. How are the shorter ppl suppose to grab onto them? They look exactly the same as the old cars with a couple of bells and whistles. Same shit different yr.
@erichau728 - The TTC is a dinosaur, crumbling to dust because of inadequate funding from all levels of government, bickering among those levels of government, & a stubborn refusal to replace its archaic fare system.
Tokens & paper tickets & transfers were abandoned decades ago by every major (and many minor) transit systems around the world. The TTC continues to lose millions due to fare evasion & fraud from customers & its own fare-sellers, because it won't automate fare sales & collection.
@erichau728 MTR's K-stock trains in Hong Kong were actually made by Mitsubishi and Hyundai Rotem, but they do look a lot like the Toronto Rockets, which are based on Bombardier's Movia design and made by Bombardier.
Looks good.
