utter crap from some of the comments here. women who wear the burkah make a rational choice. the burkah and hijab are know as the 'level of modesty', islam does not allow it to be forced, it becomes haraam (prohibited) if that's the case. women actually feel safer with this on. its even more liberating for them. whereas the westerner believes she is liberated, when in actual fact she will walk down the street with hotpants on and get jeered by men, say its offensive, then say they are liberated

Well I don't think that France has the right to change a religion that has been around since the year 1000. It's the Muslim culture, and unless the followers of Islam themselves change the way of their religion, the modesty "rule" for women should stay as is, not changed unless you have a right to do so. Same goes for any religion and any rules within that religion. Unless the rule is to kill 12 people a month. But you catch my drift. Plus- 2:46.
@Carolyn124 The Quran never mentions the Burqa or tell women to wear such extremely confining clothes. The modesty rule allow women to show their face, hands and feet, the rest of the body shall be covered (aka, the Hijab). The burqa is a cultural aberration that has nothing to do with Islam.

I have to say i disagree. As a woman who previously VOLUNTARILY chose to wear the hijab, i realized that not only does is it sexist, controlling etc. but women who do choose to wear it do not know what is good for them. It's like someone choosing to be illiterate.
THey also banned the burqua because it's a problem in daily life, what if someone shoplifted or hurt someone in a public place; and the only way to find out who did it was to look on a camera or get wittnesses in....nobody would know who the hell it was. It can also be a saftey reason not being able to see someones face...and isn't it just a natural thing to be able to see someones face. @pogobat I think France banned Face Covering due to terrorist concerns. If a person's face is caught on camera, their face can easily be identified. They weren't specifically targetting the Burqa. Now,if a criminal wears a face mask,he would be caught before he could do any damage,because it's against the law to wear one in the first place.I know, people will have to stop wearing Burqas too, but it's a small price to pay for Public Safety.

i still beleive that as people of the western world we cannot fully condone nor endorse eastern cultures. France is encourages freedom, and you seem to be denying that fact. first, if you ever lived in France (or most western european countries) you would understand that freedom is almost more prevalent here. The burqa ban for me is quite contriversial. in france it was banned for security reasons (ski mask in crime), but that is only a cover for more fundemental women's rights. Now the idea is quite good, but if a woman is not given the choice of whether or not to wear a burqa (hence women's rights issues) she will probably not be allowed out in public. banning the burqa may only confine women to their homes rather than actually help them.
i think.. in germany there is a rule not to hide the face in public too.. but the rule exists since years and now the germans are all confused if they should ban it or not.. because there is one of the highest rated rules every rule has to follow.. freedom of every religion and what comes with them... but i don't feel very good if they run around here.. everyone could wear a "burqa" and do anything without being identified.. i hate the burqa's but i don't think we can ban them.. would'nt be fair

As an Australian I was shocked to find out how much I knew about Islam was wrong when I recently moved to the Middle East... we have a lot to learn in general about Muslims.

It's been speculated that in the beginning burqas served as protection in the deserts against raiders and soldiers from the crusades, as village women were often raped and abused in attacks against civillians. By wearing clothing which would hide their features they could be somewhat protected. NOW THOUGH, there really is no need for such protection, unless you live in a country where conditions are the same as during the middle ages and earlier. France is not one such country.

Well I don't think that France has the right to change a religion that has been around since the year 1000. It's the Muslim culture, and unless the followers of Islam themselves change the way of their religion, the modesty "rule" for women should stay as is, not changed unless you have a right to do so. THey also banned the burqua because it's a problem in daily life, what if someone shoplifted or hurt someone in a public place; and the only way to find out who did it was to look on a camera or get wittnesses in....nobody would know who the hell it was. It can also be a saftey reason not being able to see someones face...and isn't it just a natural thing to be able to see someones face. How can you see their expressions, i get that it is religious, ubt i kinda think France is right...

@pogobat I think France banned Face Covering due to terrorist concerns. If a person's face is caught on camera, their face can easily be identified. They weren't specifically targetting the Burqa. Now,if a criminal wears a face mask,he would be caught before he could do any damage,because it's against the law to wear one in the first place.I know, people will have to stop wearing Burqas too, but it's a small price to pay for Public Safety.

France is encourages freedom, and you seem to be denying that fact. first, if you ever lived in France (or most western european countries) you would understand that freedom is almost more prevalent here. The burqa ban for me is quite contriversial. in france it was banned for security reasons (ski mask in crime), but that is only a cover for more fundemental women's rights. Now the idea is quite good, but if a woman is not given the choice of whether or not to wear a burqa (hence women's rights issues) she will probably not be allowed out in public. banning the burqa may only confine women to their homes rather than actually help them.

i think.. in germany there is a rule not to hide the face in public too.. but the rule exists since years and now the germans are all confused if they should ban it or not.. because there is one of the highest rated rules every rule has to follow.. freedom of every religion and what comes with them... but i don't feel very good if they run around here.. everyone could wear a "burqa" and do anything without being identified.. i hate the burqa's but i don't think we can ban them.. would'nt be fair

Sometimes being so stubborn about freedom leads to the opposite. There comes a time when you've got to stand your ground and "fight" for what you believe in. I believe in sex equality and Id rather upset a minority of the woman wearing than letting the rest being oppressed.

You may be right but think about the fact that every woman wearing a burqa kinda justifies those who force other woman to wear one. It's like saying "it's okay to wear a burqa". Of the two groups of Muslims, the Sunnis and the Shiites, all of the radicals are Shiites, which make up 20% of all Muslims, and a only a tiny percent of Shiites are radical. This comes to less that one percent of Muslims being idiots who want to kill anyone not of their faith.

It's been speculated that in the beginning burqas served as protection in the deserts against raiders and soldiers from the crusades, as village women were often raped and abused in attacks against civillians. By wearing clothing which would hide their features they could be somewhat protected. NOW THOUGH, there really is no need for such protection, unless you live in a country where conditions are the same as during the middle ages and earlier. France is not one such country.
