  • Classic Bassey recorded during what I consider her peak (although it's hard to think of Bassey being ever even greater than she is now. What I really enjoy, though, is the collage of photographs that takes us through her evolution.

  • check gladys knight...slow and low...and that is how it was writtten.

    love bassey

    i love you tube..

  • Good version, but it lacks something that Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield and, of course, the composer the great Burt Bacharach have in their versions,

  • magnificat

  • shirley the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • To me, this is the best rendition of this song. :) I just dig her vocals, and the string arrangements. Her 'belting' really gets to me!

  • By foreign origin; was this song connected to the tv-serial with the same name

(Do also belive Raquel Welsch played in it)?

  • wonderful version.

this song requires a belter at times and thats bassey.

but!..NOT better than luthers live version...none are.

  • I honestly don't care who wrote it and who sang it first, cause to me, this will always be Luther's song.........R.I.P Mr.Vandross !!

  • She is epic, as always, but the pacing of the song doesn't work for me.

  • Dusty Springfield had a big hit early on with this tune that came out of a film. Burt B. composed it.

  • TheReturnOfStephan1, thank you for this great and detailed information. I really appreciate it.

  • weak

  • thnktank1 thank you for the information. I also love the song "To Sir with Love". And, yet today this song is still powerful and rich as when it was first written.

bygollybabe...thank you as well. Great information.

  • This is absolutely beautiful, who originated this song? We have Della Reese, Dionne Warwick, Shirley Bassey, Luther Vandross, etc. can someone tell me who originated the song?

  • @nett1eb

It's from the musical PROMISES, PROMISES.

  • @nett1eb The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David who wrote a great many of Dionne Warwicks songs and first appeared on her album titled "Make way for Dionne Warwick" in 1964. It was also sung by Lulu who is famous for-amongst other things, singing "To Sir with Love".

  • @nett1eb The song is in, but, not from the 1968 Broadway musical, "Promises, Promises".

It was composed for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters.

Brook Benton is credited w/ releasing the first version, two weeks ahead of Dionne Warwick, w/ Warwick's version reaching #71 on the pop charts to Benton's #75.

Some say Benton's version was featured in the film.

    Others say Dionne's.

  • Love this so haunting

    EthM 100

  • incredible..i love her

  • This is pretty phenomenal. A very Grand version. Very different from the version I am used to, which is Luther Vandross' version. But Dame Shirley gives it a whole different emotion, very convincing. I feel the intent of the song with her version like no other. Thanks Jonas! This is a treat.

  • my favorite version of this song! I searched for it for many months on youtube . thank you for posting

  • What a wonderful voice -- such talent.

  • Gimme Luther... for my friend Henry who died age 41 recently...

  • @markbob120 so unnecessary.

  • One of Brassy Bassey's screechier performances; not a fan of this one.

  • Burt brought it home with this one. Lulu, Bassey, Luther, Dionne,.........all fantastic.

  • This song, written by and performed by Dionne Warwick became one of her most famous staples. Luther Vandross' version was very much loved by her. He is not a backup singer by any definition of the term.

  • Wow, I bet Kurt learned a lot from lady Shirley :) I love this song, it got me in tears so many times!

  • Classic voice!

  • I`M SORRY I DON`T LIKE IT VERY MUCH, "VERY THEATRICAL"

  • This is cool to hear Dame Shirley singing this song. I know it primarily from Luther Vandross. This version is beautiful, and believable. Thanks for this post!

  • @lydee09 Yes, Dame Shirley really gives this song the justice it deserves. Luther Vandross, to me, was always a great back-up singer, want to be a lead singer. The only song I truly like is his 'Power of Love.'

  • WHAAAAAAAAAT?Luther Vandross is one of the most gifted singers of the last 50 years!

  • @sugarshula64 Vandross to me was a master of his craft, and quite the lead. You should hear his Anyone who had a heart. I love it. I have seen him live many times. he was very entertaining. I guess because he had been a backup singer he was paid excellent attention to detail, and his backup singers were gorgeous with gorgeous movements and voices.

  • Wonderful...I enjoyed this very much...thumbs up...thanks for sharing! :))

  • Beautiful song by the one and only Shirley Bassey and I'm glad that it's posted once again. Thank you Thorneycroft! Shirley Bassey's rendition of this song sounds like the definitive version. Every song that Shirley sings always sounds like either the definitive one or it's near the top of the original version.
