  • @buswang Thanks, enjoy the bass

  • Excellent reggae bass man. heres a little trick most people overlook for reggae bass - play the strings up on the neck (not directly over the pick ups) to get that ultra deep reggae bass tones. just watch fams do it

  • @DUBnDOOM Thanks. Yes, fams plays close to the neck, but robbie plays closer to the bridge to get better definition and attack... but he hits the strings very softly. Many different tricks from many players :-) My taste is somewhere in between.

  • Hi ALIONBASS,

I usually do not write comments, but as I watched and listened to your undeniable skill and talent with that Fender bass, I was very impressed and thankful that you shared your time and videos of some solid bass playing for others to emulate and learn from. Great playing!

  • the unique thing about dis song in my opinion has gotta be de bass, bad! bassline, serious man, nice playin dude got hav that bass turned up proper wiv reggae :D

  • what kind of bass is this?

  • 1974 fender jazz bass

  • soo nice man, i tryd my friends once, easiest playing and one of the nicest sounding ever =]

  • What kind of Yamaha do you have? For this sound, a bass with single-coils pu's is the best. In fact I made a few videos with a Yamaha BB Std (ready, aim, fire / dubbin' is a must / pass the kouchie / boderation). Nice sound too!

  • Of all the reggae bass i've seen on tube yours is by far the best and ur bass has the most amazing tone, its a jazz right? anyway its perfect. how can i get my yamaha to sound like that? and please don't say you can't get a yamaha to sound like that!!! flat wound medium strings for starters yeah? i'm havin trouble gettin hold of those here in ireland, anythin else???

  • In order to get that crisp tone, position your treble knob somewhere between its half and full position (3/4 almost) and to get that lively bass kick, turn your tone (bass) knob near its half position. Crank your amp volume up (but not too high) and limit your bass volume to the minimal. Play near the neck rather than back down the bridge. If you'll play near the bridge you'll get more or less a crisper and more rock sounding feel that is absolutely not suitable for reggae...Hope this helps...

  • Congratulations for the GREAT job you are doing and many thanks for sharing your talent with us. I enjoy your humble company.

I've learnt a lot from you, and am still learning!

    Best regards from Paris.

  • What a groove, man !

  • awsome playing! this is a great song! do you have the tab?? cos i can only find one for the bob marley version. PEACE

  • YOU DESERVE DEM !!!

  • wow ur amazing is it hard 2 learn bass as am thinkin of learnin....a like the honer b2a coz it luks unusual.....a play drums reggae stylee , we shud jam togeather lmao :p

  • starting off's easier than guitar but when you get on the techniques can be harder to learn than the parallel techniques on guitar

  • ey man, youre my hero. and i mean that from the bottom of my heart

  • thanks for the compliment, enjoy the vids!

  • Where did u get that version? cause the original is in C#m,and the lines played in that version are different.

  • Thanks, it's a combination of a good bass, some EQ (boost lows around 80-100 Hz and cut highs and high-mids) and the way you hit the strings.

  • Dude you have an amazing bass tone! Any advice on how to get that tone? Mine sounds so muddy. I cant find that deep yet crisp sound like yours.

  • what a feelin,very nice this bass

  • wow, simply amazing, kudos to you.

  • U -roy would love you. Roy was the ultimate toaster and as you know made a unique version of this song.......... Natty Rebel. Thanks again

  • This bass = deep meditation, culture and emotion

    Awesome

  • Hey do you dub the music over your playing for making your videos?

    Nice Skills

  • Just playing along with the CD on a Tascam BT.

    Greetz

  • This is such a sweet baseline. Isn't there a slower version to this song?

  • he is a junior rebel

  • nice job

  • ALION BASS IS THE KING OF BASS...

  • Hey Man,

Your groove is great! I am very happy to have seen your videos. There was a huge need for them. You stated you run your sound through the Tascam bass trainer. Do you then use the output (line out) to external speakers?

I have only started bass, but I do have that Tascam trainer. Guess I haven't tapped the full potential of the machine. Obviously, I want to play reggae just like you can eventually.

Peace and keep up the great posts, Jah Rastafari

  • Hi, thanks. I use the line out to plug straight in my mac. The bass sounds better with an amp, but that's too difficult for making the video's.

    Greetings

  • Mac,huh? Guess, I have barely scratched the surface on music production equipment needed. :) It's the journey, right?

Had a technique question, do you mute all strings or something? I have a lot of extra hum. I try my best to keep the string from ringing too long, after playing it. And am learning how to keep the hum down on the others that haven't been plucked.

    Do you have any tips?

    Thanks, brah.

  • You really don't need a mac to make this kind of videos ;-)

About muting the played notes, you can use the fingers of both hands. The strings I don't pluck I usually mute with the fingers of my left hand. When I play the A-string, I put the tip of my finger against the E-string, or put my middle finger on it. And by keeping your fingers flat, you keep the higher strings silent.

    Hope that works.

    Greetings

  • Thanks. About to start practice now, so I will attempt the technique.

    Take care

  • Ok, so back to tone.

Your on a Jazz bass, are you using neck or bridge pickup, or a mix of both? Rounds or Flats? and how about tone?

My axe is a three band active Jazz, and Im not quite finding the nice Reggae tone out of it.

  • I always have both pickups full open. Mostly I use rounds, sometimes flats. Just cut the highs completely and boost some lows. The way you hit the strings with your fingers is important. With a three band active preamp you should be able to get a decent reggae tone.

    Succes!

  • This can also be used for Jacob Millers "run for cover" .... You make it look to easy :)

  • Im one of the bass players from the ney york ska jazz ensemble, I love your stuff.

  • soul rebel for life!!!!
