I remember listening to the '75 OU - MIZZ game on the radio with announcer Mike Trepps, OU was down by 7 with a couple of minutes left on the clock. "Davis options right to Washington, Washington cuts back left jukes a tackler, jukes another breaks into the open the 50 - the 40 - Go Joe go - the 20 - the 10 TOUCHDOWN OKLAHOMA!!! Joe Washington has done it, Joe Washington has done it. Joe Washington has just run 74 yards for touchdown. Man was it exciting, I'll never forget it.
Remember the three (non-racist) "little monkey" comments made by Cosell? Who was #2 about??
#1. "That little monkey. The theory was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)
#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt/kickoff return?) JOE WASHINGTON???
#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)
I think Joe was the most fun to watch of any back OU ever had. A close second was Greg Pruitt. AD gets the most recognition because of how good he was right out of high school, but Joe Washington was just plain fun to watch. It helped that he played on such great OU teams.
joe was a great player played little league baseball with his brother kenny joe was the stat guy for us what great days he told me at oklahoma he had great memories
Thank God for YouTube and the internet......I went to every home game from 70 through 78 as a kid & I will always remember the teams with Joe Washington. He is the best back who gets the least recognition in my opinion.
Arizona State was the real champs that year 12-0 beat 11-1 nebraska 17-15 in the fiesta bowl that year. OU beat an 8-5 Michigan team in the Orange Bowl.
So sad that I wasn't alive when Little Joe played, but having watched all the highlights I can get my hands on, Joe is my favorite OU running back of all-time. And that's saying something, considering AD was at OU the same time I was.
lil joe was also a threat to pass the ball. his monday night performance against new england i believe is still voted the greatest monday football game performance each year in which he returned a punt, caught a pass, and threw a passing td.
lil joe shouldve won both heismans archie griffin won. in the nfl draft of 76 ou dt leroy selmon was the 1st pick, a te from notre dame the 2nd pick, chuck muncie rb cal the 3rd pick, and lil joe washington rb ou the 4th pick. not sure where griffin went.
that play where he spins was against pitt the 1976 national champion. also the player he leaps is from pitt. it wasnt like he did it against a cupcake team. love all the ou running backs but lil joe is probably my favorite of all time to watch. the guy was a threat to take it to the house everytime he touched the ball.....nice nfl career as well mainly as a 3rd down specialist.
Little Joe was a rare player, on you would ruin with coaching for his raw natural ability was so potent. This is one guy if there ever was one you couldn't get down in a phone both playing flag football. I've never seen a guy make so much happen in such small spaces.

@spakastu1 Nice try but OU Nebraska was 11-1 because OU beat them 35-10 that year when the were ranked #2.
