C Amer. political analyst Alberto Valiente Thoresen cites Honduras '82 constitution as a flawed compromise of US gov supported counter-insurgency policies, civil façade military governments & undemocratic policies. In assembly of elected representatives from various political parties & social sectors, a new more progressive & inclusive constitution would have big impact on country's corrupt politicians, powerful sweatshop owners & repressive military institutions. THAT'S why the coup happened.
Yeah, he's trying to change the constitution. A fucking dictator would have changed it, not put it to a vote, moron. Many of these military leaders were trained here by the CIA in the School of the Americas, just like all the US trained goons in Bolivia and Colombia. I bring up Castro because you said the word "dictator" and I wanted to give a valid example, so that comparisons can be made.
The government declared the "vote" illegal! The referendum to change term limits is illegal in Honduras! He was looking to rewrite their Constitution to install himself as President for life. He is a wannabe dictator! Obama is wrong and fails yet another key foreign policy test! Who's fucking side is he on? He wants another dictator?
Eliminating term limits, and installing yourself as president for life are completely different, situations: One would have to be incredibly stupid, or perversely dishonest to claim they're same thing.
I love how you put "vote" in quotations, it reminds me of someone: "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves." Henry Kissinger
Obama and the U.S. are not God. They do not have the right to tell other countries how to run things. They do not have the right to impose capitalism or "democracy" on other countries as they see fit. The reason the world has never known peace is because we cannot stop judging everyone and everything in this world.
We are 6 billion different people with 6 billion different opinions. Your opinion or your country's opinion is not God's word. Stop judging because someone disagrees with you.
NO, the question is WHY are you repeating the same pathetic, alarmist lies propagated by US corporate media, parroting the Pentagon & State Dept. BS villifying Zelaya & L America's social justice & progressive democracy movements after the past 60+ yrs of ruinous US interference, brutal coups, rightwing militarism & neoliberal debt-peonage. 5 min. fact-checking accurate sources would reveal truth: Zelaya's reforms threatened Hondurans' entrenched elites' hold on wealth & power. Viva Revolution!
In ONLY 16 years! They try to make it sound so unheard of! Like its a throwback to the dark ages. "He was seized by his own soldiers which were supported by the courts and congress" Why should that be condemned? Sounds to me like he got fucking fired! How can you cry to the world about that?
Some of Zelaya's 'crimes': He raised the minimum wage, gave out free school lunches, provided milk for babies & pensions for the elderly, distributed energy-saving lightbulbs, decreased the price of public transportation, made more scholarships available for students. He increased teacher's salaries & fixed the roads. He put schools in remote rural areas that never had them before. He let anyone go into the Presidential Palace and converted it from an elite residence to the people's house.
He attempted to dismantle the Honduran Constitution and install himself as President for life. Zelaya is out and he's not coming back in this lifetime. We will defend our banana plantations to the last man!
My parents are from Honduras... very liberal people. THe president was trying to get elected for more time than the constitution allows... No dictators in Honduras, period. Good job guys!!
Yeah, because putting a non-binding referendum to a vote is totally what someone like Franco or Castro would have done.
Ending term limits doesn't make you a dictator; you're still required to hold elections, and at any time the people can just VOTE FOR SOMEONE ELSE. Is Angela Merkel a dictator because France has no term limits on Chancellor? Is Gordon Brown? Pendejo.
Here we go... comparisons that have nothing to do with Honduran politics. He's trying to change the constitution fuck-knuckles. Why do you throw in Castro? Ha ha, you are everywhere on that comment. This is a country getting rid of a potential train collision, and you are a web gnat.... Laters marimacha!
They changed the constitution in the US to allow blacks to vote, to allow women to vote. To allow non-propertyholders to vote.
You seem unable to distinguish btw corruption & reform.
Add to that that the Honduran Constitution dates to 1982--a period when the rt wing gov was supporting death squads in Nicaragua. Incredibly easy to imagine such a document being badly overdue for popular reform, & entrenched elites eager to keep that fr happening.
again comparing events that don't relate... he's trying to be like chavez, hondurans ain't nobody's bitch... so he got the boot! good shit, you know little... little man! "slaves" ha ha, honduras is the second most peaceful country in latin america next to costa rica. you know shit, cause you never been there, i live there for years so don't get machetted up! Later cunt!
