  • 0:49 mass eargasm

  • what metal mouthpiece are you playing on?

  • I'm sorry but the bone section disappointed me :(

Listen to the original recording the bass bone playing those pedals played them with balls. It looks like you had a tuba player do them. That's just wrong. Give the guy a bass bone. Bass bone > Tuba.

And you're playing the lead bone part down an octave. WTF!?!

  • We played this last year. This song is sick!

  • who shouted YYEAAA at 3:50 ? lmao

  • BARI SAX IS THE F**KING BEST I LOVE PLAYING BARI

  • props to the bass player, the tempo was WAY too fast, look how hard he was working! (1:34)

i bet he lost about 5lbs during this performance

  • the best person is the bass player!

  • haha.. If you press "6" on your keybored over, and over, and over, while this is playing, its sounds like a train. (:

  • haha that was awesome i play bari and 4 me this is like the best song ever. i love the funky music at the beginning

  • these guys are pretty good. but the Mira Costa High School Jazz Band plays it better. check them out

  • wi im learnin to play moanin on the bari

  • It's pretty tough playing Mingus in a school band. But those guys and girls did a real good job, I think. Like the ovetones in the beginning :D

  • AWESOME!!!!! Belmont Jazz Band "A"

  • Great solo!!! Really liked it

    can you send a sheet??

  • Fabulous! Don't pay any attention to the nitpickers and complainers. This was very well done and entertaining. I was smiling all the way through. I enjoyed it.

  • play that funky music white boy?

  • the only good thing in this vid is the squeak on the bari sax in the begining! ( i know it wasnt a Real Squeak its what i call it) nice altissimo hit thought!

  • THIS IS AWESOME! Those bari players know where it's at.

  • what scale do you improvise on if you do

  • Nice soundin =]

Just my opinion, the director should not be up in front doing cues and stuff at the beginning. Let the kids get going, but still deffinetly not bad

  • whoever said "say what" should just leave

  • good job for the most part, but i don't know about the faster tempo.

in general moanin' is more of a combo tune, not a big band tune (that would be like if a quintet played Sing Sing Sing, it wouldn't work) and should be played a bit slower.

  • great song , i love how you made your own beggining solo istead of taking mingus's , the two sqweeks were a lil wierd but original ;P , but you shoulda slowed down abit haha , but other than that good job , i'm playing this at school too , don't listen to the hate comments because most of them are from people that aren't that great musicians and prefer just to find the defects in others , other than looking at themselfs

    good job

  • it needs to be slower it sounds as if you were pushed for time and had to fit it in because the piece should last 10 minutes if played like it should be but very good impressive

  • My schools jazz band does it and weve got the best bari sax player ive ever seen in a high school band

  • hahaha, these guys are young, how can anyone expect them to know much about copying the style of someone as refined as mingus?

  • Wow. Incredible. Amazing. As a future music teacher (3 more years, god willing), these are the kids that I would consider family. Just wow. So much talent interspersed with child-like innocence from what I assume are high school students is nothing short of inspiring. These kids are amazing and I hope that these are the musicians of tomorrow. Amazing!

  • You guys seem to have forgotten the fact that this is school christmas concert

jazz bofs can leave it home

this was probably full of parents and grandparents who are happy just to see their kids playing and having fun

    i'm gonna say good job

my school swingband did a version of mingus's boogie stop shuffle and it was great fun

i can say i enjoyed this honestly

just don't like reading the negative comments

  • bah no offense, but i really didnt like the interpretation in this video. First of all.....waaaaaayyyyy too fast, its a fast toon but this sounds out of control. The fast pace of this song really didnt fit with the slow improv by the bari player before he started playing.

the alto player girl with the solo, i loved it, you were great!

Also... i really liked the bari player on the left with your use of the growl. awesome!

  • lol yeaaa this is nothing special. I mean, whoever thought of dueling bari saxes probably thought it was a good idea to speed this up to i-really-gotta-piss-and-im-trapped-in-a-box speed. The alto solo was pretty kick ass, im not gonna lie, but the articulation was off. it felt like she was behind a count, even though im sure thats not possible in improv :) The bari player soling in the beginning sounds awesome btw

  • The tempo is kinda rushing good start love what you put in the cadenza. Think Intonation. Other wise you guys look like you had fun.

  • XD LOL!!! WHAT!!! SAY WHAT!! that was awesome! :D you guys rock

  • haha , my Bigband at school ploays it WAYY better , i'm not saying these guys suck , but the begining solo wasin't even jazz at all lol , and these bari players sometimes cut off to breathe ... and in case you were gona ask , yes i think i play the bari better lol

  • I'll just be honest, I didn't like this at all. I not saying that I could perform it amazingly, but I have played this and I don't like this version at all. Its soo cheesy, its like when a jazz band goes to some comp wearing hats and sunglasses in the dark auditorium. Too much cheese for me.

  • to the person who said the screech was awful. Hah, you know NOTHING about jazz.

go learn a thing or two.

  • Wonderfully Spirited! Tis' my favorite YouTube cut of this awesome tune. Thanks for sharing.

  • you guys have chops. nice sound.

  • ehh not too crazy about the sound comng from the band bt nice try lol.when i get a video of the Dillard band playing it ill post it so that i can show you how its supposed to sound.

  • Nice tune selection but Where's the fire? Too fast! It's got to be dirty not muddy and if you are going to steal a lick for your solo go with art pepper not kc and the sunshine band. that was a little cheap.

  • Asian alto player who had a solo and the bassist sound like the classisest two players in this band...

Guitarist learn your chords so you can turn your volume up.

  • this is amazing...god i started jamming at :51...he came outta no where and started the written solo

  • I think one of the hardest things you can do as a Jazz Bass player is take a Charles Mingus tune and take it up tempo, I think the only thing harder would be taking a Rush song up tempo.

Good performance, and as he said earlier, don't ever squeel like that again, and make sure that the low Bb in the theme is short, heavy, and try thinking of a nice dut syllable.

    But overall, nice performance

  • Props to the upright guy in back.. Mingus is certainly no pushover when it comes to bass music

  • this is one of my favorite jazz songs ever. you guys did a great job.

  • man, that screech at :33 ish was dead awful. dont do that, ever >_>"

And, I think you shouldnt have put a line or 2 from play that funky music in there. didnt fit the song =\

and, the alto did a much better job than both soloing. The bari on the left wasnt too bad either. To the other bari, listen to more recordings and steal lines form there ;p. This is a charles mingus tune! he avidly smoked weed, its suppose to be like...outa control-ish. and stay away from bop songs, the suck ass ;p

  • Mingus did not smoke weed!

What the hell is wrong with you?

  • looks like the partridge family. decent job though.

  • sounds so rushed--i wouldve taken at least 15-25 beats slower

  • for the detractors: please post the url to YOUR video ;)

for the band: I liked this one best because it doesn't try to be Mingus or Mingus++, the band just tries to be who they are, doing it their way, and that is what Jazz is all about.

and the joy you express is infectious.

As Gene Krupa said, "If we're gonna die out there, Benny, let's die doin' our OWN stuff."

  • the little prelude where you kept playing play that funky music white boy could have used a little work. It's good to have fun while you're playing, but you can do that without satirizing the song. Moanin is hands down my favorite song to play as a bari player, i think you could do without that at the beginning

  • i play bari and i loved you two both of you have a pretty phat sound. the thing that killed this for me though was the tempo and the backgrounds werent together in the unison parts.and they were obnoxious at times otherwise great job

  • personally i thought the bari's tone was perfect.

just aggressive enough for mingus, but not grinding on the ears. my fave part of the origional song is after the alto solo when they take it in double time

    you guys sounded great

  • the bari's need to work on the tone a bit more. plus your rushing on your part.

i play bari, we played this song and it sounded waaay better not to be mean.

  • Little bit too fast, the bari sounds great though :)

  • owch man! alto is fun to play, but i just love the bari...its the bomb...ever tried the tenor? its fun for blues and jazz.

alto is great for swing and med. stuff like "take five" or songs like that.

  • you guys need to slow down!!!

only thing i like is bari's tone...

  • nic song bari saxes are the bomb keep it up

  • Too fast.... It breaks the feeling.

    Sorry I don't like it.

  • hey we just got this song in jazz ensemble and im the only one whos takin the solo (alto)

what do u suggest i do when playing this song to make it as good as possible?

  • stop biting your reed. its not altissimo

  • you guys rock!

  • im thinkin about switchen from alto to bary any sugestions

  • A smart move. I switched in Middle school- it is a much more substantial return on your practicing. The richness and the satisfaction of carrying almost every song was enough of a reason for me. Good luck!

  • hell yes do it i did it 3 years ago. bari is so much better than that squeaky alto trust me...you wont regret it

  • I have been forced to do the reverse... from Bari to Alto because of University... I don't like it nearly as much and live for every moment i get to play my bari

  • @fmenz30 I played alto and tried bari and i love it so much, def give bari a shot

  • anyone know the time signature to this piece?

  • its just common time

  • its common time but its conducted in 2/4 time

  • I originally play alto sax. But this year our jazz conductor is giving me the opportunity to play bari. It will be a good experience.

  • shoulda had the alto chick play the bari part, she wouldve beasted... on the guy with bad tone xD!

  • the bari's need to work on the tone a bit more. plus your rushing on your part.

i play bari, we played this song and it sounded waaay better not to be mean.

  • true, but the piece is meant to have fun, which means play it like you want it, plus a bari sound really comes out when it get's down and dirty, i would know cause i play bari.

  • the bari sounded really but the alto rules! Go alto sax!!!!!

  • eh... i've played both for 5 years now and i prefer bari. low A is an amazing advantage bari has over alto, and if you use the argument "if you put the bell of an alto to a stand, you can get low A" then i can use the same argument and say that i can get very close to a low G with a loose embouchure and a mouthpiece pulled really far out. i hope we play this song next year in jazz band btw.

  • I have gotten a low G out of a low A bari before it sounds really weird

  • It doesn't sound weird if you tune it! :)

I made what I affectionately refer to as the G cone... it was a large paper cone i stuck in the bell, and trimmed until the G was perfectly tuned to 440

    It was awesome!

  • I just stuck a shirt over the bell so i could get one out... I didnt need it in tune :P

  • good job...do u know where to get that sheet music? my jazz band wants to do it,

  • I remember that... wow it seems like forever ago...

  • The intro was gay, nice bari sound though.

  • go bari saxes!

  • i play bari i dont want to sound stupid but the intro to me kinda sounded like play that funky music

  • precisely what it was...

  • im not trying to be mean this is just what i think:

its too fast... nice job on the bari sax this is my favorite jazz song and i play bari sax but it sounds better slower it just sounds like a bunch of people playin random things other than the bari sax

  • sorry to be such a critic, but its way too fast to actually be enjoyed. it just sounds like a bunch of dying elephants. sorry again, but u can't really hear anyone except the muffled trumpets and a bari sax with horrible tone issues.

  • this is awesome....i am the only bari player at my school, ive been playing for almost 6 years....and i have been trying to get my director to get this piece for our jazz band...its awesome and i think it would such a privledge to get to play this song....i love it. great job guys

  • far too fast. it was obvious on the intro

  • oh, hm i never got to try otto link metal mouth pieces, im trying the vandoren ZZ reeds at the moment, theyre nice! have you tried any berg larsen mouth pieces? jw where is your school located?

  • I tried Berg larsen too... but I found it way too bright. I am quite a "powerful" player, and with the brightness of the berg larsen I was afraid that i would blow the band away :P

We are in Victoria BC, Canada.

  • ooooo..i love my Berg Larsen

  • (continuing) but the intonation between the baris and the style needs to be similar. but by themselfs, good shit =]

btw what mouth piece do you guys use and reeds do you use?

  • I don't know about Dave, at that time i was using a rousseau jazz (hard rubber) w/vandoren (original) reeds. I have since changed both to Otto Link (metal) and Vandoren ZZ reeds

  • i must say, good sound from the bari on the right hand side, hm their tone is quite noticeably different from their saxes and please, the altissimo note sounds... ew not that great. but good warm, sound from the bari. have you heard pepper adam's sound in the original recording? the last part of the bari lic is fat, not long or short... i play bari myself personally and both of you sound great, the altissimo you could make it warmer, and its a bit sqeaky more then a "moanin" sound?

  • i liked it, but it coulda gone slower, but hey real jazz is always at ur own tempo so i shouldnt talk

  • asians on saxes kick ass. (i'm chinese and i play bari)

  • Wow. I sure am proud of you guys. Ha. Bari saxes don't get the recognition they deserve. I've only seen one bari sax solo in the last 4 regional marching contests, yet I've seen about 20 thousand trumpet solos. But really, don't give up on that bari sax, man. From one bari sax to another, keep it up.

  • Yikes... That was pretty brutal. Might I suggest more black people and heroin next time?

  • LOL, fuck that's funny, man oh man, kinda true

  • Hello there..Mingus forever !

Please have a look at my Tribute/Video/Remix

of " MOANIN " and tell me if You like it !.

    ciao ciao.

all the best to You !.

    francesco.

  • Thanks for defending my honour Alexei, ha, but Mr. "start playing jazz and stop pressing buttons," can honestly bite me. If he wants to continue photocopying the "greats" with their 6ths (big f*ing whoop, try a maj7(#11) some time) then he can go and do that. I'll continue to play how I do and no amount of commenting from over-critical creativity-repressing egotards over the internet will change me.

  • by the way will... i love you as much as i hate you :P

  • Ha, I felt the need to reply so I made an account. If/when I get a webcam, I should impose a piece for Mr. "6ths are cool".

  • one things is you guys should have just stuck with one bari player, i noticed that between the two of them one of them really lags on tone and tempo

  • i liked the dueling baris, but the player on the right could have toungued the notes better.

  • yeah he seems a little lazy there with his articulation, i play bari myself and i play this ear lol, but yeah i just think it lags

  • is you mean later on the left... when it is solo.... I lagged on purpose just to mess it up a little... maybe not the most stylistically popular move but it's all part of the learning process...

  • opps i meant left, yeah thats not the smartest move to do in jazz, almost everyone will notice that one player is better than the other, but its a good performance you guys put out. I personally wouldn't do it for your next performance. Good recording always strive to get better at what you do.

  • yeah i meant left, but why would you lag on purpose? not always a smart move in jazz, but ok job

    its all a learning experience.

  • well... free jazz...

what more can be said :P

I have changed in both my ability and knowledge since last year... chances are I wouldn't make the same move again...

    but what the heck?

  • its all a learning experience so you shouldn't trip too much,=P

    good job though

ohh and sorry for the double post kinda thing my computer is laggin!

  • i play bari as well

  • nice job guys...i play alto, tenor, and bari...u did a good job on it...u might wonna try "take the A train" or "a night in tunisha"...those are always fun no matter what...bari sax is one of the coolest instruments to play...definitly try the pink panther lol

  • FUCK YEA

Conductor is sweet, string bass player is great, I play bari and it's the strongest instrument out there (UNDERRATED).

  • Bass trombone needs to watch his tuning at the beginning, and where's the big old pedal G-flat?

  • fuck man! that was awesome!

  • Lame start, Play that funky music?

I wanna hear a nice improv start.

  • i agree, but it sure does kick off after

  • i play bari-sax

  • How do not use a harness!? I've played bari sax for four years and I still can't manage not using a harness. But that may be because I'm a five foot tall girl. Anyways, good job!

  • Haha, try playing without a harness or a neckstrap, that gets interesting. Good to see more people that play bari.

  • nice job guys....anyone here have the sheet music for that? I play alto, tenor and bari sax.....and me and my high school jazz band wonna do that...so if u know where da music is...please send .....thanks

  • lead trumpet needs to play jazz and stop pressing buttons

and the bari sax needs to get the blues scales out of his head and play the 6th to make it sound cool

  • the lead trumpet is not just "pressing button". The video lags. If you don't believe me, watch the drums, he's not just "flailing sticks". It's all a little bit behind, so you cant match the figures with the noise.

Secondly, it's up to the soloist to choose which scale he would like to choose to put his artistic impression on the song. You don't need a "6th" to make it sound cool, you can do whatever you want. That's one of the beauties of music.

  • let me ask you if you have ever heard miles davis, wayne shorter, gerry mulligan, and any other professional jazz artist stick to a blues scale the whole time when the changes are obviously minor chords. if ur answer is yes then ur an idiot. jazz was set up by the greats and trying to play like the greats is how you make progress. not stick to blues scales. plus, wut the trumpet is playing doesn't really appeal to the ear and i hear some wrong notes in there so he is "pressing buttons"

  • this was meant fr replying down there

  • wow...trying to play like the greats is progress...isn't that a hellish paradox. If we all tried to play like the greats before us, we would get nowhere. We wouldnt even have Jazz. You can surely imitate, but thats not progress. It's the innovators that are making progress...and keep in mind that the greats of today were the innovators of yesterday. And what appeals to your ear is personal, making your accusation of "pressing buttons" unfair.

  • thats ridiculous. Every jazz innovator has taken and imitated the greats and continue to do so today. joshua redman, michael brecker, and bob mintzer are all imitating the things set up by coltrane and stitts back from the 60's. its not like their ideas have no foundation and got lucky to play jazz. plus making the accusation of pressing buttons is completely fair seeing as how wrong notes are played every other note, making it seem like the horn player doesn't know wut he's doing

  • Obviously our opinions differ, and since it looks like neither of us are going to change our minds, we might as well stop arguing.

  • I have to agree with this guy. Brecker and Mintzer started by imitating and once they could do that they did their own stuff and have totally unique and wonderful sounds. Even the great Louis Armstrong imitated his idol Joe "king" Oliver. Just like like Mingus imitated Oscar Petiford. The point is that once you've mastered the style of the greats ,and know your jazz theory, is when you can start to really have and develope your own sound. It's just tough critisism sorry.

  • pshw~ lead trumpet neads range :D

  • play that funky music white boy!

  • Its kinda of hard to follow with out hearing the bari sax (which I play by the way) or hearing the stand up bass but its a very good song

  • say no to blues scales, the trumpets (only because there weren't any on the mingus recording), and

  • Flashback to my highschool.... we did the EXACT same thing... except without the dumb sqeaks... playing moanin waaayy too fast with a big band of like 50 kids... it was lame then, just like its lame now...

  • lol... i guess your not called ZaDouche for nothing.

  • i think your right brad. i cant get enough of this version :P soon i will be playing a Yamaha YB-52 again!

  • I wish we could play this at my school!!!

  • so big deal, the bari players can play blues scales. AND?

  • Not too bad for a HS band. I was pretty offended by the bari on the right (i.e. squeak and cheesy Wild Cherry lick). Cool idea with the two baris...I'm not too sure how Mingus would have felt about it...

  • Real Bariist don't use a microphone!

  • lovin it :]

i too play bari and it's the best insrument ever (:

does anyone know where to get sheet music for this??

    i'd love to play it!

  • loving the baris! being one myself

ADORING THE DOUBLE BASS!!!!!!! OMG i love that instrument

loving the band you guys are good!

i wish i had a school band that at least could do a full scale.. ya im basically the only one that understands music there soo

  • dang awesome solo i play bari my self

    bari is the best

what kinda horn is that u play

  • Dave plays a Selmer, I don't know which model,

    And I play a Yamaha YBS-52

    Damn Awesome Horns :)

  • ive been playin alto for 3 years and mines all crappy and broken but i can still play but dat band is just awesome

  • this is awesome! bari rox. ive been playing bari since 2004. im currently playing a martin bari. but soon may be playing yamaha, i want the yamaha!

  • Thats pretty cool, I have been playing bari for 6 years. I like the idea, you don't see bari's trading solos often. Nice!

  • yes it is very nice... we got 3 baris at my school :P i want a 3 way bari solo

  • Sweet.

  • I'm the drummer =D.

This was definetely a shoulder buster, but good times indeed.

  • u can hear the difference in sound in the baris right away its cool that u guys dont sound exactly the same or it would b dull n boring

  • I've just started playing bari in band and it makes me go all light headed.

    hehe

    =]

  • Awesome!! I play bari for concert band. We just started today, it's the first time I've ever played it. I LOVE it.

  • I play bari sax too, in marching and symphony band. It's amazing. And anyone who comments badly on this video can go try and play that on the bari sax themselves. Not too easy, is it? They're in highschool at the oldest. Cut them some slack. They sound amazing for a high school level band. Of course they aren't going sound like professionals!! Lighten up!

  • BARI SAX WOOT! i play bari in my school band. im so pumped. we had this crappy bari and just yesterday we got a selmer! it's like a gift from God.

  • selmer... nice! Dave owns a Selmer and Me I own a Yamaha. Both are Nice Saxes, And I love both to death.

(Played a circa 1960s Mark 6 Selmer Bari once, All silver, completely engraved. Best Sax Ever)

  • yah bari sax players! i play the bari sax in my school's jazz band too. nice job.

  • i love the bari line in that and i play bari myself, i have never gotten to play that song but i want to give it a shot.

  • Awesome stuff. I like the speed, it may be a bit rough around the edges but it kinda works with moanin'. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves too which is great :), Your double bass player is quality too to be able to hold the speed, nice one.

  • My college's jazz combo adapted this for our own purposes a few years back. As the Bari player it amused me greatly when the person doing lighting for our performance chose lighting for a much more soulful song than we ended up playing.

And if you ask me, most of the 'bad' that this recording presents is due to the recording itself. You can only expect so much fidelity from a personal video camera.

  • Oh...and no--it's NOT perfect. You're kids. You're still learning. But my hat's off to any school band that tackles it, and it's actually pretty good--and, more importantly, PROMISING. And props for throwing in the "Black Magic Woman" quote.

  • Thanks, at least someone has some faith in High School Bands. Obviously we're not pros but were doing our best and still learning.

  • Hey, I know how it goes. I don't play but I had a lot of friends who did, and our hs jazz band played all over the country and won all kinds of awards. I saw the first performance given by the first rough incarnation of that band, with minimal skill and the same few tired charts over and over, and I saw it grow over the years into something incredible and professional-quality. These naysayers don't have the first clue.

  • I can't believe how many people on this site would be so unabashedly harsh and cruel regarding a performance by CHILDREN. I like to think I know a little bit about jazz (and if you knew me you'd know that was a hilarious understatement) and I actually think Mingus would be amused by the tempo here (and further I think he'd be pleased that kids are even ATTEMPTING his stuff).

  • its moanin' its supposed to be jumbled besides its just a highschool how good do you expect. ok the bari's can't improvise fast enough to solo on this tune but its a fast tune for a high school band.

  • I liked the first part - with just the two baris - but when everyone joined in it just seemed really jumbled. But I think the baris were pretty good, I'm happy to see baris having the melody - especially two!

  • lol, i opend a solo once for jazz band it was awsome <3 my bari sax

  • this is bad. its not like even decent its just bad...no offense

  • this is shot with an old video camera that was put into digital form. obviously the quality isn't great, I was there, they were awesome, they gave me shivers. That doesn't happen often. When was the last time you played this song?

  • My dad shot this footage. The camera was not old. It's not new but it's not "old". It was shot on a GL2 and the mic was a shotgun mic (not sure which make). The problem is the compression to a .mov file and then onto YouTube. As for the sound you can blame a Gym for that. The acoustics in that room are absolutely DREADFUL.

  • too true jon too true... if only SD62 would build us a performance hall :P

  • hahaha great job guys

    very talented!

  • Hamiet Bluiet is the man.
