also notice that his objects are being stretched equally in both directions. This is not a default behavior (I don't think), but it's a useful setting. There is a checkbox in the object tab called "stretch both sides" that causes this to happen. You can see it selected at around 0:30 in this video.
Just a tip for those using this -- the first time I used it, I forgot to change the Ruler mode back to "World" -- and any time I tried to rotate, the object would spin wildly! When you use reference, don't forget to go back to "world" ruler mode. :D
