  • they are great singers there is no doubt but, it gets a bit tedious...

  • I like......

  • I guess Barry Manilow did not "write the song"

  • billy davis jr singing that piece of "wreck of the edmund fitzgerald" is funny; this is classic 70's tv; they are both a class act, thnx for post

  • OMG, do the presenter have to sing every song?... glad its not done anymore

  • This entire presentation is class act through and through. And, I can't help but wonder if someone penned the term "drop dead gorgeous" after watching this. I couldn't take my eyes off of her.

  • Afternoon Delight was the rightful winner.

  • Marilyn was so beautiful...

  • I loved this so much! fantastic way to introduce the songs.

  • enjoyed this thoroughly.thanks

  • Wow they even made Afternoon Delight sound good.

  • I sat in front of Marylin and Billy at church. I didn't know who they were at the time. When the church started to sing praise and worship, I heard this beautiful voice behind me. I ALMOST told her, "You should pursue a career in singing." My friend told me who they were after service. THANK GOD for shyness :P

  • Damn Helical scan SUCKS!

  • thank god punk came along the following year and saved us from all this middle of the road pap.

  • @joedgillis afternoon delight!

  • Idiot performers today could not even think about doing such a performance live without an Autotune unit plugged in back stage to account for the wavering pitch and a talent so far below these two

  • Ah, for those carefree days, when the biggest worry was trying to figure out how many rhinestones you could fit onto your lapels. Also, it seems, singers knew their place then, and weren't allowed to do a babbling 5-minute acceptance speech. Thanks for interrupting the karaoke, Bruce!

  • That makes total sense. You can just catch Ron Burgundy close to the middle of the VIP section, beaming like he'd just downed an extra Bourbon on the rocks.

  • To ALL my brothers and sisters who were 15 in 1976. We've lived through some of the best pop, rock, & soul throughout the history of music. How lucky we were. What a gift.

  • I want Mr Davis's tuxedo.

  • These and Marilyn's previous turns on the Grammys with 5D probably got her they gig on "Solid Gold."

I imagine Carl Wilson singing lead with the Beach Boys on this one, except he does it in the key Manilow ends it with(C or D major?).

  • Man, in the seventies, kick ass singers would come out and do their own versions of the nominating songs? That is the shit.

  • Today? They'd STRUGGLE to find 2 people who could sing with enough range and understanding of music theory to sing the nominees! Then AGAIN - Todays nominated songs would be such SHIT that it Wouldn't MATTER!

  • that was a great year!

  • This is great! What a contrast from the year before when Glady's Knight and the Pips sang the nominations. I wonder what the matter was?

  • This is great! What a contrast from the year before when Glady's night and the Pips sang the nominations. I wonder what the matter was?

  • Jenni, I'am 64 and feel the same way you do. You will someday experience that being older is not a bad thing... in fact there is a lot of truth the saying "You are only as old as you feel". I am glad you love the music of the 60's and 70's. That means that someday when I am in a rest home...(ha) I might get to hear you or someone your age performing a tune that might bring tears to my eyes with happiness. Norm...

  • fair play they both have such beautiful voices - great idea - wonder if they could get Britney & Justin to same for this years 2011 -

  • true professional singers and entertainers.

  • too groovy ... songs about love making! I'd like to try some more of that love making I must say

  • What a great job!

  • His name is actually Bruce Johnston. He was one of the Beach Boys. Wonder why they misspelled his name?

  • @torresongs2 I THOUGHT THAT HE WAS A BEACH BOY

  • I miss the '70s.

  • Ha, I like the Graphics.

  • Short and sweet acceptance speech lol.

  • She's so lovely

  • oh dear lord, why did the Barry manilow song have to win? Lol

  • @mattimattiusa Well...at least Barry didn't write the song!

  • Ugh. The insipid "I Write the Songs" won over "This Masquerade." A disgrace.

  • @Branner I agree! And Neil Sedaka's version was alot better than that moronic rendition.

  • This presentation from Marilyn and Billy rocks!!! Damn the old Grammy shows were a bore but they had class with presentation that's for sure...

  • 'i write the songs' is about satan. bruce johnson got the lyrics from lucifer himself, is it any wonder why they decided to build up the piece and finish off with this song? which leads to a glorious win by bruce johnson? please... its just satan patting himself on the back again, suckin up all the praise and glory.

  • Breaking up is hard to do was from 1976? I thought it was much, much older.

  • @madmax8903 I think it was a re-release. Because I know David Cassidy did a version around 1970-72.

  • @azcactus2008 Oh yeah, that's the version I remember.

  • @madmax8903 You're correct. It is an older song written by Neil Sedaka in 1962, but he slowed it down a little, and like azcactus2008 mentioned it was on David Cassidy's 1974 album. However, Neil's re-release of the song done much slower was probably bigger than David's version because I don't remember hearing David's on the radio in the 70's. I'm sure it was played though on the radio.

  • I just clicked on this video because the woman was breaktaking beautiful.

  • Did they really pay for those outfits ?

  • Wait, did they spell his name wrong? Isn't that Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys?

  • Here's what I'm thinking now, even though America has gone totally down the tubes, I enjoy my memories of a time that produced so many sweet moments.

  • I'd listen to Marilyn sing the phone book

  • sweet sweet sweet ... beautiful renditions

  • What a beautiful couple, and still together, loving the Lord and each other!

  • I remember watching this live. What talent. What class. Why can't they do shows like this anymore.

  • I remember watching this live.. What style back then. What class. And what amazing pure talent!!!!! Thanks!!!!

  • Afternoon delight .......all the way !!!

  • What a great singers.....wow....they do not make em that way anymore....

  • Hey, somebody adjust the "tracking"!

  • The worst song won. How sad.

  • The graphic at the end is misspelled; it's Bruce Johnston. Everyone thinks Barry wrote this song, .... he simply immortalized it lol ... watching clips from old 70s variety and award shoes makes me feel so young ... TV's golden decade, in my opinion.

  • What great voices! Marilyn is the best voice ever!

  • I love them! Too bad it wasn't exactly a great set of nominees. I'd have given it to Breaking Up Is Hard to Do even if it was a 20-year-old song.

  • There's no doubt that I saw this back in 1976 because I loved awards shows "then". As Mrgone78 said, "now THIS is how you present a grammy award". It helps when the performers can sing like Billy and Marilyn! God Bless them! I haven't watched the grammy's in YEARS because it's just trash now. How sad. Parents, I'd like to encourage you to let your kids listen to beautiful music, like what Billy and Marilyn sing, that has meaning and depth. So, when they're older, they'll appreciate it.

  • who are these guys, absolutely amazing, why did everything go down hill?

  • @damianrwhite Those "guys" are the amazing Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. They were originally from the group "The 5th Dimension" of the 60's which had a string of #1 hits including Up, Up and Away, One Less Bell To Answer, Wedding Bell Blues and others! Marilyn and Billy have been married for about 40 years! I don't know how old you are, but I'm old enough to remember watching their variety show, which I loved, in the 70's. This duet had a mega hit called "You Don't Have to Be a Star".

  • @damianrwhite let's not forget marilyn hosted solid gold for six seasons in the 80s. they still do concerts together all over the country and sound great!

  • I would like to see a couple of todays so called "performers" do the exact same thing as Billy and Marylin did here so masterfully, without all the technology of today to fall back on. Just live singing with real talent, on the spot and under pressure. They would most likely fall right on their untalented faces.

  • @markie909. You made a Great comment! You're right! Billy and Marilyn performed masterfully which todays so called "performers" would undoubtedly fall on their faces because they "must" rely on the technology of today as you said. I feel sorry for those of us who like "real" music and just can't turn on the radio in the car to hear it locally. I really liked your comment and everyone's comments!

  • Isn't Bruce Johnson the Bass player for the Beach Boys?

  • I would have given the grammies to the presenters!!! What a great show!!!

  • @kmoforum I love your comment, and I agree completely! This is a great show, and Billy and Marilyn deserved a grammy for their beautiful singing. I think the next time the grammy's come on, I'm going to watch clips like this of the 1976 grammy's.

  • Marilyn i love you

  • Beautiful duet on " I write the Songs"

    Marilyn and Billy nailed it!

  • Marilyn McCoo is so pretty.

  • I couldn't believe it either, Bruce.

  • Now this is how you present a grammy award!!

  • I love this. What a great time to be alive. The variety of the music was heavenly. And Marilyn and Billy...well they broke the mold when they made those two. Fantastic!

  • Shy rockets in flight?

  • Oh, dear....Afternoon Delight was nominated?! LOL! Kinda sticks out like a sore thumb, especially next to "Masquerade".

  • you are absolutely right!!

  • This is great, but no wonder why the show was 4 hours!

  • I really love this. It gives all of the nominated songs a chance to shine.

  • Now that is how you give an acceptance speech...Someone need to inform the BET Awards nominees (smile - LOL)

  • There do not seem to be many great black popular signing artists out there right now (not that they are not there) it's just that we're getting pushed with b.s. sounds that have NO VOCALS..i am only 16, i srsly LOVE classic black popluar singers and i only WISH the black community woulld bring out that vocal sound that motown and other 60 and 70's R&B singers brought us - Hugs, Jenni, 16 from the Chi-town (chicago area)

  • @mythebau this is when they were cute, they look like hell now and fat!

  • @ranmae57 OK, first off, that is patently untrue (and there are videos on here to prove it), and secondly, let's compare photos of you from 35 years ago and today and see how much tonnage you've gained.

  • How true

  • @mythebau - 'There do not seem to be many great black popular signing artists out there right now'?!

Out where, exactly? Your back garden? I can think of 1 or 2.

  • @mythebau It still dosen't have anything to with colour or race. There's not at big differents between Celine Dion and Whitney Houston - though I perfer one of the versions.

  • So great! Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance....!

  • I remember this AMAZING performance when it aired on TV .. 33 years later it still shows the great talent of Marilyn & Billy ..

    thnx for the ADD !!
