nostalgia/legacy aside, ian curtis is a terrible singer. i cant believe anyone would want to imagine him singing anything (coming from a huge joy division fan)
@CelsoCelso88 Dude, you go to the head of the Dark Production Genius Martin Hannett Class, hey good for you!!! I ve read the insane dismissive reviews of Movement, clueless cretins at their best!!! The album is a powerhouse, a knockout, thanks in part to Hannett's production, but mostly due to an angry, talented band robbed of their singer!!!!! Movement, an album for the ages, allllll by itself!! Who loves you baby!!
@kidcresh .....I have a very eclectic musically taste that spans many genres, but New Order is my favorite band; and this album speaks to me in a way totally unique from the rest of there work. It's subject matter and sound are both dark, dense and illuminating at the same time. Esoteric in sense, the chords, the lyrics, it's visceral how it seeps it's way under my skin. I've listened to this album many, many times over, always a different experience.
I am glad LP's like this didnt go commercial. it kept that b-side, underground, college radio sound and genre. dark, mysterious and always experimental. here in the bay area we had 3 colleges that played the likes, one was KZSU.
The general consensus seems to be that Senses is the weakest track on Movement, but I couldn't disagree more. I began playing this to a classmate months ago, who said, "Where's the music? It's just a beat!" It may not be a particularly conventional or cohesive song, but I think it's wonderful. The hypnotic drumming and bizarre, clanging synth-pad, the sinister keyboard, the bass line accompanied by the thrashing guitar riff... one of New Order's finest, in my opinion.
@Sudhish86 Lyrics maybe don't qualify the ones of Ian Curtis but nevertheless i strongly stand by that this is just a following part of Joy Divison, either way people generally are in vain thinking only Ian did all the music, it's not true, Bernard Sumners and Peter Hook did a big part of the work!
@AORCrazy, the music isn't similar, either. Of course all the members contributed. But it was Ian's keen ear and mind for emotional and imaginative correspondance that elevated their work. Granted, I think this album is great. It's starting to influence my work (check my page*cough*) But, the music wasn't always working towards something tragic. From UP to Closer, all of the music was warning signs. This is rather positive experimentation. Again, I like it, but Ian's not around to elevate it.
@Sudhish86 Best of both worlds (JD/NO) i think, however. They obviously couldn't evolve in the same direction without Curtis - but listen 2 the (hard 2 come by) JD electronic experimental stuff-/ + Atmosphere etc - there is a continuity there.
@locomotifx, not really. The more electronic JD stuff still had a vast, grand feel to it. NO never had that. Granted, again, I like this album; it just was quite a different thing. I wouldn't consider it a continuity, mainly because every band/ artist was moving onto electronic equipment during that time. The new equipment might have some affect on how similar they could sound. There was just no greater purpose behind NO's music. Electronic, but just approached differently.
@Sudhish86 I see yr point, 'though i don't entirely agree. On a slightly different note (ha ha) I remember Peter Hook saying in an N.M.E. interview when he left the band that there was a bit of an issue re the band's future direction. Hook wanted to emphasise the 'acoustic' side whereas the others wanted to go more & more into electronica styles. It's all very interesting, at any rate.
I like New Order, especially the key and guitar work, but I prefer JD's vocals and pacing - it's just so crushingly in the dark. No offense, but these songs are not underrated. They may be great by today's unoriginal overly polished standards, but they're pretty drifty and not cohesive, and have the time I wish they would end two minutes sooner than they do. For rabid fans only. Or if you're 24 and getting trashed, then it's great mood music.
Worth pointing out that NO sacked their old JD producer Martin Hannet after this album - it was said that he'd failed to realise that NO were already striking out as a new band, with a new sound, and that Hannet was basically stuck with the JD concept.
As evidence, listen to the (Hannet-produced) version of "Senses" here and then try the Peel Session version, which sadly doesn't appear to be on YT yet. To me, anyway, the latter is a much fresher, more positive and forward-looking sound.
That's crazy now that you mention that -- I can clearly see the improvement in producing after this album, but yet I love this distinctive Hannet sound -- he could really hear a lot of talent in a group of boys that couldn't harldly even play their instruments -- and he helped them create trippy recordings like this with echoing Indian warlike drums and stuff. Then after this album they have such a cleaner sound, but more like just another 80s band. I think, am I right?
Joy Div used to sound loud and roudy live, and much more punk, and I just don't know how anybody heard this sound in them until Hannet discovered it. Still, there's improvement on some things after this record for sure.
@VeracityProductions Just beneath the crap sound quality of the bootlegs I've heard - several - of their live stuff, there is clearly something angelic. I guess he found a way to bring it out in the studio. Clever guy.
@indiebird12 faudrait voir a ne pas mettre les mots sous-estimé a toutes les sauces! no a tjs eu la gloire qu'il méritait!! contrairement à :the scars, durutti column et tant d'autres!!!!!!!!!
@indiebird12 Gotta disagree on the Closer connection. Not JD really, but not the banger-clubbing of New Order either. But blissful and that Lonely Place I like to retreat to.
It took me a while to get used to this album, it's got a very...cold sound. But when I did get warmed up to it's atmosphere, it seemed so incredible. This track in particular.

an album way ahead of it's time, critics were clueless as to it's brilliance at the time.
Peter Hook's favourite NO album, mine too. Timeless classic.
